Bavo Defurne´s Collection
Campfire is a collection of four short films by Belgian director Bavo Defurne. I had enjoyed seeing the title film and one or two others at film festivals and was pleased to have this DVD appear. It would be easy to suppose four different people produced each movie since the techniques used vary so much. The most noticeable common feature is the scaled back or non-existent dialogue. The visuals are rich and the actors as gorgeous as can be. There are skin shots in all four.

One of my all time favourite organ pieces; played on one of the largest organs to be found in the Netherlands. Because the piece wasn't played flawless, I won't share with you the organists name. No need to give him a bad name over an otherwise brilliant concert that costed just € 1.- Recorded with the Panasonic TM700 and Sennheiser MKE400 mic. I left the volume auto gain control on, to make sure I would get all the sound without clipping or a too low volume. The sound envelope and bass is tweaked in post processing. I recorded the clips accompanying the music before and after the concert. After the concert, it was already quite dark, and the lights inside the church got switched of quite soon, so I even had to utilize the 'color night view' mode a few times. As long as you use static shots for (mostly) static scenes, it's actually quite useable :-) Edited in final cut pro

Jos van der Kooy plays a famous tune from the Church of Norway Chorale Book on the great Christian Müller organ in the Grote of Sint Bavokerk in Haarlem (October 2007). The beautiful organ resides in the Grote of Sint Bavokerk in Haarlem, about 15 minutes by train from Amsterdam. It is 30 meters high and has 5068 pipes. The organ was designed and built by Amsterdam organ builder Christian Müller between 1735 and 1738. Major rebuild in 1961 by the Danish firm Marcussen and Søn. www.yikes.com

My favourite version of one of my favourite organ pieces by Bach. I LOVE the high metallic sound of the register that plays the upper melody (I am a layman when it comes to organs so I don't know the proper terms for it ;)). No copyright infringement intended. Echoes from St. Bavo Toccata & Fugue in D minor
Toccata & Fugue in D minor played on the famous Müller organ by Diane Bish. Dating from 1738 and measuring 30 meters from the ground up, the organ was played by Händel in 1740 and '50, who travelled to Haarlem especially for this purpose, and in 1766 the ten-year-old Mozart was on the organ. The St. Bavo Church in Haarlem Holland is famous for its superlative acoustics, a sound die-away of an incredible eight seconds.

Bass Pig's Rendition of Danse Macabre for Organ (old vers)
This is the original low quality YouTube version. A new, high quality version with stereo sound was uploaded at www.youtube.com My interpretation of the Lemare Transcript of Camille Saint-saëns' "Danse Macabre". Normally heard as a symphonic performance, this piece is unusual as an organ concerto. I took liberal license in my interpretation of this transcript, and as such, the performance you are about to hear is uniquely my "vision" of how this piece should sound. I performed it on a Kurzweil K2600RS, loaded with samples of the great Bavo Organ (Post Organ Toolkit), located at the St. Bavokerk Church in Haarlem, The Netherlands. The Christian Muller Organ is the focal point of St. Bavo. It's 30 meters high and has 5068 pipes. Constructed by Amsterdam organ builder Christian Muller between 1735 and 1738, Handel and Mozart both have played it. I did considerable tweaking and editing to these samples, as, although very good in their raw state, were in need of certain adjustments to improve the realism of their performance, and to bring the various samples in tune with all of the rest. The video contains a compilation of photos of the exterior and interior of the Church of Saint Bavokerk, the organ being the central focus. Later in the video, I reveal, photographically, the truth of what you are really hearing. Talk about fantastic revelation!

Carillon (glockenspiel) in the church at 11 am on June 15, 2009. The church is the largest in Haarlem, and the construction started in 1370. Across the street from the beautiful church is the recommendable Ambassador City Centre Hotel (www.haarlem.com), where we stayed during our days in Haarlem. The video was shot with digital photo camera.
