www.bbc.co.uk James Blake has been announced in 2nd place for the Sound of 2011. London producer James Blake sails into Sound Of 2011's 2nd spot at the forefront of the emerging post-dubstep sub genre of UK club music. The Deptford based artist started singing and studying piano at the age of six, a tutorage which eventually led to Blake's attendance of Goldsmiths University to study Popular Music. Early listening came in the form of his parent's classical and jazz collections, in addition to US Soul and R 'n' B from the likes of Stevie Wonder, D'Angelo and Sly & The Family Stone. Blake's love of electronic music came much later when the artist discovered dubstep duo Digital Mystikz a few months prior to his Goldsmiths enrolment. Club nights at the University followed, before an appearance on Rinse FM's new producer segment saw Blake signed to fellow dubstep producer Untold's label Hemlock. James released his first twelve inch Air and Lack Thereof on the label, while creating blog buzz with remixes of tracks by Snoop Dogg, Lil Wayne and Destiny's Child under his alter ego Harmonimix. Soon after the producer joined Mount Kimbie as the third member of their live show. Blake claims he was influenced to add more of his own vocal to his work by Joni Mitchell's Blue and Bon Iver's For Emma, Forever Ago, and this style has become increasingly evident in subsequent releases on respected Belgian label R&S. www.bbc.co.uk Jamie Woon has been announced in 4th place for the Sound of 2011. 27 year old songwriter and producer Jamie Woon has charmed a host of critics with his electronic soul music. His ear-catching vocal talent saw the singer tipped as a soulful troubadour at a time when Adele and Amy Winehouse were finding fame, before collaborations with respected members of the dubstep community saw the producer coupled with the likes of James Blake and Mount Kimbie at the vanguard of the post-dubstep genre. Woon hails from four generations of musicianship which includes Sensational Alex Harvey Band members Hugh and Ted McKenna and his mother Mae McKenna, who has provided backing vocals for performers including Michael Jackson, Kylie Minogue and Bjork. Initally inspired by Britpop, he started playing guitar at 15, and attended London's BRIT School before Son of Dave and Reggie Watts performances inspired the singer to incorporate loop pedals into his singer-songwriter act. 2006 demo Wayfaring Stranger bubbled under for over a year before a remix by Mercury Prize nominated producer Burial brought it to the attention of numerous bloggers. The singer followed this up with a trip to Barcelona to attend the respected Red Bull Music Academy where he worked with Subeena and Debruit. Woon's continued association with Burial, alongside fellow producer Ramadanman, has seen the likes of radio's Mary Anne Hobbs, Benji B and MistaJam take notice. Indie quartet The Vaccines have left many in the music industry frothing at the mouth with excitement since they bounded onto the scene with a YouTube clip of track If You Wanna. The clip sparked the attention of Franz Ferdinand managers Supervision, and ignited a whirlwind of positive press and blog coverage, which continues to this day. Frontman Justin Young had found minor success with indie folk project Jay Jay Pistolet, coming to the fore alongside friends Laura Marling, Noah & The Whale and one time flatmate Marcus Mumford. Failing to hit the heights of his counterparts Young decided to change style, forming The Vaccines with Freddie Cowan, who had played live with his brother Tom's band The Horrors in the past. Icelandic bass player Arni Hjorver and drummer Pete Robertson soon completed the line up. A sold-out October appearance at London's 300 capacity Flowerpot saw 200 more eager fans turned away and also saw Clash Music refer to the band as "game changers...that will launch a hundred wannabees", before punchy double A side debut Wreckin' Bar (Ra Ra Ra) / Blow It Up won over the likes of NME and Radio 1's Zane Lowe, who claimed the band would "kickstart a new era". A deal with Columbia Records and an appearance on Later... with Jools Holland followed, before the NME signed the four piece up for the illustrious opening slot on their 2011 Awards Tour.
