Control, fourth video from Spoek Mathambo's debut album Mshini Wam: www.bbemusic.com It is a darkwave township house cover of the Joy Division classic 'She's Lost Control'. For the music video, Spoek has collaborated with one of South Africa's most celebrated photographers, Pieter Hugo & cinematographer Michael Cleary. It explores the world of township cults, street preaches and teen gangs and was shot on location in a squatted train boarding house in Langa, Cape Town. The cast is mainly made up of the neighborhood kids who run their own dance troop, Happy Feet. Spoek Mathambo (www.spoekmathambo.com) has been putting the world onto his brave, progressive take African music for the past number of years (through his own music as well as DJing under the name HIVIP) and most recently, through the release of both his solo album and assembling a band to realise his afro-futurist dream. The project was the Million Dollar Orchestra, an army of musicians whose sole mission was to complete a fully orchestrated Disco LP born in Al's mind and inspired by the lost sounds of classic '70s material much in the vein of the Salsoul Orchestra or MFSB. The MDO LP achieved just that. The music was rich with lush strings, thick brass sections and filled out with arrangements of epic Disco proportions. About Chrysalis in Benny's own words: Chrysalis was the last track to be made for the album so has a lot of influences from the sounds I have been listening to lately, a lot more on the futuristic tip. Wanted to put my own spin on the really FX heavy really produced sound but still keep the big spacious floaty vibe. I also worked with a vocalist by the name of Sacha Vee who I had done some work for in the past. She's a jazz trained vocalist so I wanted to see what happened when I gave her something way out of her musical spectrum. The result was this crazy fusion of styles that came out sounding quite different.
