The whale suffered very little damage during its ordeal. A one-year-old humpback whale that beached itself in Manzanillo on Mexico's Pacific Coast has been guided back into the ocean, the navy said on Monday (February 28). The roughly 30-foot-long, six ton (13000 pound) whale was found beached on Saturday evening by a fisherman on the beach "El Eden," south of Punta Campos. A 100-person animal rescue team from Mexico's Navy including veterinarians and a curator, responded and found that the whale was in good condition but that it had injured its right flipper from lying on it for so many hours. The navy gave the whale, which had also suffered scrapes and scratches from rocks at the shoreline, steroid and antibiotic injections and guided it back to sea. The navy said the team was hoping that the young marine mammal would reunite with its mother or school of whales. It wasn't clear why the whale had beached itself, although it might have done so after getting lost or separated from its mother or school of whales.

Paracas National Reserve, Peru (NTN24) Area residents pitched in to rescue a 3 ton beached whale Friday (February 3) after specialists say it got disoriented in a nearby bay and ran aground. Navy sailors, fishermen and area residents all joined in to save the animal when it was seen struggling in the surf off the coast of the Paracas National Reserve 240 kilometres (150 miles) south of the capital city of Lima. As they worked to push the seven meter (22 foot) mammal back into deeper water, residents covered its skin with wet towels to keep it from drying out. "We found it close to the shore, maybe just 10 or 15 meters [yards] away. Now we will be able to push it with all these people — with the harbourmaster, police, fishermen, and park service rangers," a park ranger who did not provide a name said. As the worried volunteers tried to push the animal back to sea, park rangers helped it keep its head above the splashing water to avoid any additional stress. The director of the Paracas National reserve, Steve Marthans, said it was important the Cuvier's beaked whale return to deep waters to keep it from beaching again. "We've been able to refloat the whale. It is a Zifio [Cuvier's beaked whale], that's the name of the species. It is about 7 meters [yards] long and weighs almost three tons. A 33-foot-long dead whale was recently discovered in a marsh half a mile inland near the English village of Skeffling. Biologists suspect that this is a female Sei whale that became beached after being caught in a particularly high autumn equinox tide. Explained Kirsten Smith of the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust: With the high tide the whale probably got carried up on to the salt marsh, got pushed further in shore and then got stuck when the tide went out. The area where the whale was found is salt marsh, which is still connected to the sea. The salt marsh is one of several components of the Humber Estuary, and is further in than the mud flats and sand components. Sometimes whales come into the shallow water looking for food and get stuck. This dead whale is but one of several to be found in England over the last month.
