Airlie Beach, gateway to the Whitsunday islands has a reputation for being a great place to party, in between sailing trips to the islands. Another must stop location on the backpacker migration up north. Had a ball in Airlie, went out on a boat yesterday to snorkel the reef. The colours of the coral and the diversity of the fish life just blew me away. Thanks to Jetstream for the trip. Also checked out the Barefoot Bushmans Wildlife Park where you can see a variety of Aussie wildlife including a great crocodile show. Tomorrow I go out on a 54 foot Classic Schooner, the Atlanta , for a morning cruise before heading off to Magnetic Island. It's a hard life..... In Airlie I decided that given it is such a big location for back packers, instead of interviewing an Aussie local, I would interview a back packer working at Airlie. HOW TO GET TO MAYA BAY: Fly to Bangkok (BBK) through KLM Royal Dutch Airlines (which is awesome) then take a jet down to Phuket. Jump on a cab and have them take you to the docks where you'll catch a ferry to Phi Phi Island. Reserve a room on Phi Phi before you leave home (I recommend Phi Phi Island Village Resort and Spa) then take a long-tail boat to Maya Bay at around 11AM the next morning. Most people go through the front entrance to get to the beach but if you feel like being more adventurous then take the back way like we did! You'll have have to jump off your boat, swim to the ladder then hike through a small forest to get to the beach. It's much more fun that way, trust me! If you plan on bringing your camera like I did, then BRING A WATERPROOF BAG!!! I took a huge risk to make this video but if it weren't for that bag, then this video wouldn't have happened. One day, while walking along the shore, the kupuna looked down the beach, and saw a gracefully dancing human figure. The kupuna wondered out loud, "Who would so joyfully greet this day with hula?" and began to walk faster to catch up. Getting closer, the kupuna saw that the dancer was a keiki (child), who was not dancing at all. The keiki was reaching down to the sand to pick up something, and was very gently throwing it into the sea. The kupuna called out to the keiki, "Aloha! What are you doing?" The keiki paused, looked up and replied, "Throwing starfish into the sea." Surprised, the kupuna sputtered, "I...I guess I should have asked, WHY are you throwing starfish into the sea?" The keiki smiled brightly, pointed upward and, with exquisite simplicity, replied, "The sun is up, the tide is going out. If I don't throw them in, they will die." "But, don't you realize, " asked the kupuna, "that there are miles and miles of beach and starfish all along it? You can't possibly make a difference!" The keiki listened politely. Beautiful long and broad beach fronting shallow warm water. Ample FREE parking at many locations for easy access to the beach and facilities. Marina with boat and water sports rentals, motels and camping make this a favourite beach for many who return yearly. We found Motels right on the beach with rates $135 - 155 per night. Lots of grass areas for picnicking, tennis courts all make this a great beach. The only negative is if the wind comes up the water can become choppy very quickly, on the positive it's great for windsurfing and kiting. This is Hietaniemi Beach near Helsinki on August 8, 2010, probably around 9 PM (the sky is still light because of the high latitude). The storm cloud is coming from the South and heading North at sea level. Could it be related to the airborne dust particles from the forest fires devastating Russia and fogging up Moscow or from the Icelandic volcano? No other details are available. This is the only video on Youtube in real time, ie without the PAL-to-NTSC 1/24 speed-up, so it is a little longer than the other versions. A freak storm also ruined a concert by Mötley Cruë and wounded 40 people at the nearby Sonisphere music festival in Pori, Finland, on Sunday August 8, 2010. Mark and I hit the beaches pretty hard this year. At the beginning of the year we made a bet as to who would find the most platinum and gold by weight. Well mark won! I think we found over 80 pieces of gold and 3 platinum. I returned 2 gold rings 25 grams and 1 platinum ring that was 10 grams.
