Bald faced hornets make those large, almost round nests you can see in trees after the leaves have fallen in winter. In the summer, nests are often hidden by vegetation. When winter comes, they abandon the nest, usually by the first frost. They will build a new one, probably somewhere else, next spring. The paper-like covering of the nest is made from chewed up wood, cardboard or paper that the workers will form into the outside nest covering. Hornet nests can also be quite colorful as the wasps will gather nest materials from different sources and different color woods. Nests are generally aerial and they will attach their nests to trees, bushes or sometimes even the side of a structure. Nests that are high in the trees should be left alone. However, if an active nest is well within your "personal" space and their flyway crosses your paths, you may well want to do something about them. So is this a sign to buy a snowblower? nest that high in the air can only mean one thing LOTS OF SNOW coming this winter:)

Even the long awaited "CurleyCakes" was open for business, a new venture by restauranteur Todd English. Champagne cocktails, hors d'oeuvres, cookies, crepes and so much more greeted shoppers as they browsed from store to store, serenaded by carolers and a brass band. Horse drawn carriage rides were available all evening, culminating with the lighting of the tree and a visit by Santa Claus.

Related Blog Post: 642Blog.ca Today the Supreme Court of British Columbia handed down a ruling that declared that the City of Victoria's bylaw against homeless tent cities in city parks was unconstitutional because it violates their Charter rights. This precedent setting ruling has some very interesting consequences for cities across the country, and it should be very interesting to see how it plays out in the months to come. Mayor Alan Lowe goes on record as saying that the city "Is not in the business of providing housing," and I would have to agree with him when he points out that the senior levels of government (Provincial and Federal) should be responsible for housing the homeless. Every year the Beacon Hill Business Association sponsors a wonderful start to the holiday shopping season.
