Here's how to keep them clean. To complete this How-To you will need: Old clothes Newspapers or a plastic tarp A skate tool Cleanser Lubricant Soft, clean rags Step 1: Cleaning bearings can get messy. Wear clothes you don't mind getting dirty, and lay down newspapers or a plastic tarp to protect the floor if you're inside. Step 2: Using the skate tool, remove the skateboard's wheels and then the bearings, which are circular devices that connect the wheel to the axle, allowing the wheels to spin freely. Step 3: Pop the bearings loose from their casings. There should be eight bearings in all, two for each wheel. Step 4: Gently wash away any dirt or grime with a rag and cleanser appropriate for use on steel, rubber, and plastic, such as rubbing alcohol or acetone. Avoid oil-based cleaners, which can leave a sticky residue. Tip: For a deeper clean, soak the bearings in a jar of cleaner for a few minutes. Step 5: Wipe away any excess cleanser with a rag, and then spray each ...

Feather and Ball Bearing Dropped in Vacuum

We are all told at school that in a vacuum, all objects accelerate under gravity at the same rate, regardless of their mass, shape or size. This is something that I had never witnessed first hand. During the Apollo 15 mission, David Scott dropped a hammer and a feather on the moon to demonstrate that they would hit the ground simultaneously. The result of this demonstration looks rather strange though because of the low lunar gravity. It looks more like the hammer is falling abnormally slowly. I decided I wanted to witness this phenomenon first hand, so set up an experiment in the bell-jar vacuum rig. As space is limited in the bell-jar, I decided to use a steel ball bearing rather than a hammer. The feather was held in place with a relay and the ball bearing was held by an electromagnet. The two were powered from the same supply so that they could be de-energized, simultaneously dropping the feather and the ball bearing. The ball bearing weighs 67g and is 1 inch in diameter. The feather is less than 0.1g and does not register on my balance. It is 73mm long. I placed some crumpled up aluminium foil under the ball bearing to absorb the impact and prevent it from rolling or bouncing inside the bell-jar.

bearing reassembly.m4v

This is a video of how to re-assemble your bearings on the off chance that they become completely apart. You'll need a soft "squishy" surface at the minimum. the end of a pen will work, but I use an awl (ice pick) angle the outer race down so all the balls fall into the running surface of the bearing, angle the inner race in, and pull it into position. separate all the balls, snap ball retainer in, put shield into place and you're good to go. don't expect to get it on your first try, but you'll get it.

How to Clean Your Longboard & Skateboard Bearings by Bustin Boards NYC

Join Mike D as he walks you through a simple tutorial on cleaning your bearings. The more you skate, the more susceptible they are to debris and the more you should think about cleaning them. Hope this helps all you skaters and longboarders interested in prolonging the life of your equipment. AboutBustin YouTube: Bustin Boards is a family made up of hundreds of longboarders in NYC and thousands more around the world. We wanted our YouTube page to be real, meaning our videos are made by the skaters for the skaters. Not all of our videos feature our official team riders nor are they always shot and edited by professional videographers. Instead, we invite our friends and customers to send us their videos to show the real side of the streets and the creative ideas of regular people. We even invite people to our NYC longboard store to use one of our HD cameras and in-shop editing computers. As a result our videos show a range of skating style and levels, but always represent the unique perspective of the longboarder. Our only requirement is that its fun to watch and we try super hard to abide by that. If you make a sick video and think it would be a good fit on our YouTube page and/or website, send it through and join the family. One Love Bustin Longboarding Family.
