Ommegang Aphrodite | Chad'z Beer Reviews #591

I was visiting my sister Jena this weekend and I thought she'd like to try a sour beer since she likes wine and this might be remotely in the same ballpark. Although Ommegang Aphrodite isn't a sour beer per se, but rather a fruit beer that uses the Brett yeast strain in tandem with other strains to give it a sour edge, but isn't meant to be a lambic or gueuze.Season 15, Episode 57 BREWERY'S DESCRIPTION & INFORMATION: In Greek mythology, Aphrodite rises from the foam of the waves of the sea, enchanting all who see her, and inciting thoughts of love and lust where ever she goes. We could hardly say it more eloquently. Our Limited Edition Aphrodite Ale is ethereal, intriguing and mysterious -- as the Goddess Aphrodite must have been. Aphrodite has champagne-like carbonation, much as the foam of the waves of the sea. Plus enchanting flavors with whispers of raspberry and pear, and hints of funk and tartness created by the Brett yeast. The refreshing dryness comes from the unusual combination of Ommegang and Brett yeasts, and incites feelings of love and thirst, though we don't know about lust. Grains of paradise are infused into the nectar, and when poured Aphrodite is crowned with a luxuriously shimmering rose-pink head. 8.9% ABV HOW THIS BEER RATES: Rate Beer: 95 (overall) 99 (style) www.ratebeer.com READ MY TEXT REVIEW OF THIS BEER AT: www.chadzbeerreviews.com CHAD'Z BEER REVIEWS.COM www.chadzbeerreviews.com FACEBOOK http TWITTER www.twitter.com STORE: ChadzBeerReviews ...

Saranac Chocolate Lager | Chad'z Beer Reviews #588

It's been a loooooooong time since I reviewed a Saranac beer and it's been even longer since they released a NEW beer. But both of those streaks come to an end tonight when I review their "Chocolate Lager" - available only in their "12 Beers of Winter" mix pack. I tend to love chocolate stouts, but chocolate lagers...? I'll give it a shot.Season 15, Episode 54 BREWERY'S DESCRIPTION & INFORMATION: Saranac Chocolate Lager is a sinfully delicious deep amber lager made with certified organic cacao from Belize. Our brewers looked far and wide for the highest quality cacao to create a smooth chocolaty taste that only comes from the most exclusive cacao plants. We used the roasted seeds of these decadent plants and perfectly paired them with caramel malt and German Hallertau hops to create a malty chocolate sweet flavor. You'll love savoring this beer with your favorite holiday foods or on its own for a delicious treat! Surly Bitter Brewer | Chad'z Beer Reviews #590

I haven't had an English-style bitter in a while, mostly because so few breweries make them anymore (especially in the 'States). Anyway, I was surprised that Surly Brewing out of Minnesota had an entry in this style. This guys are known for their hop bombs - could they really brew a milder, more sessionable beer? I guess we'll find out....Season 15, Episode 56 BREWERY'S DESCRIPTION & INFORMATION: First one in, last one out, sweltering in the summer, freezing in the winter. Years of toiling and boiling have turned our brewer Todd into a cynical, surly, bitter brewer...You too can get bitter without all the fuss. Simply crack open a can and fill a glass with our latest - Bitter Brewer. Pale orange in color, this ale gets intense toast and marmalade character from British malt and American hops. Great Lakes Oktoberfest | Chad'z Beer Reviews #563

The REAL Oktoberfest in Germany ended about two weeks ago, but most Americans don't know that so let's review an Oktoberfest bier! I haven't had anything from the Cleveland-based Great Lakes Brewing Company in a long time and I saw this when I was down at Half Time Beverage in Poughkeepsie, so I decided to pick it up. This is the first of hopefully several Oktoberfest biers I'll review this year.Season 15, Episode 29 BREWERY'S DESCRIPTION & INFORMATION: Cleveland's celebration of Oktoberfest dates to the mid 1800's when German immigrants gathered at outdoor beer gardens like Haltnorth's and Kindvater's St. Clair Gardens. Leffe Blonde | Chad'z Beer Reviews #550

Have we really reached episode #550 already!? Feels like I just reviewed Founders KBS yesterday for episode #500! I suppose this is a special enough beer for the occasion - and probably the last big-name Belgian beer I haven't reviewed yet: Leffe Blonde. As you know by now I'm not a big fan of Belgian singles/blondes/pale ales so I've never been in a rush to review this beer. But as part of "All Viewer Request Month" user youtube.com requested I review Leffe Brown - but that's a tap-only beer from what I understand. So hopefully he will be okay with me reviewing this beer instead.Season 15, Episode 16 BREWERY'S DESCRIPTION & INFORMATION: Savor the mystery of the ages. Award-winning Leffe Blonde is a full-bodied deep golden ale that is surprisingly subtle and delicate. Belgium's classic abbey ale is best served in its own chalice-shaped glass accentuating the ale's aroma and creating the perfect head. 6.6% ABV HOW THIS BEER RATES: Rate Beer: 87 (overall) 92 (style) www.ratebeer.com Beer Advocate: B (users) C (bros) beeradvocate.com READ MY TEXT REVIEW OF THIS BEER AT: www.chadzbeerreviews.com CHAD'Z BEER REVIEWS.COM www.chadzbeerreviews.com FACEBOOK http TWITTER www.twitter.com STORE: ChadzBeerReviews.spreadshirt.com DROP ME A LINE AT chad9976 AT yahoo DOT com CHECK OUT CHAD'Z CHANNEL OF FUN!! youtube.com LEGAL DISCLAIMER: I am in no way affliated with the products or events, nor employed nor financially compensated by the companies featured on this show.

Three Floyds Zombie Dust | Chad'z Beer Reviews #595

It's been a long time since I had a Three Floyds beer - one of the best craft breweries in the country (if not the world). But if you live outside Indiana it's difficult to acquire their stuff. I've been hearing a lot of people absolutely RAVE about this beer so when Rob Walker asked what FFF beers I wanted, I made sure to include this on the list. Would it live up to the hype....?Season 15, Episode 61 BREWERY'S DESCRIPTION & INFORMATION: This intensely hopped and gushing undead pale ale will be ones only respite after the zombie apocalypse. Yuengling Traditional Lager | Chad'z Beer Reviews #539

Yuengling holds the title of "America's Oldest Brewery," yet they are still an obscure brewery, especially to anyone that doesn't live on the East Coast. And whether they are considered macro or craft is in the eye of the beholder I guess. The "Traditional Lager" is their flagship beer - an amber lager that may or may not be brewed with adjuncts (I think it is). Up until recently it was always packaged in green bottles which lead to the beer becoming skunky and basically a darker, American version of Heineken. Now this beer is finally in cans so I can taste it the way it was meant to taste! Thanks to youtube.com who requested this as part of all viewer request month.Season 15, Episode 5 BREWERY'S DESCRIPTION & INFORMATION: An iconic American lager famous for its rich amber color and medium-bodied flavor - with a roasted caramel malt for a subtle sweetness and a combination of cluster and cascade hops, this true original delivers a well-balanced taste with very distinct character. 4.9% ABV HOW THIS BEER RATES: Rate Beer: 32 (overall) 98 (style) www.ratebeer.com Beer Advocate: B- (users) B- (bros) beeradvocate.com READ MY 2008 ORIGINAL AND 2011 UPDATED TEXT REVIEW OF THIS BEER AT: www.chadzbeerreviews.com CHAD'Z BEER REVIEWS.COM www.chadzbeerreviews.com FACEBOOK http TWITTER www.twitter.com STORE: ChadzBeerReviews.spreadshirt.com DROP ME A LINE AT chad9976 AT yahoo DOT com CHECK OUT CHAD'Z CHANNEL OF FUN!! youtube.com LEGAL DISCLAIMER: I am in no way affliated with the ...

Westmalle Tripel Trappist Ale - Beer Review

BBA T-SHIRTS ARE FOR SALE: www.betterbeerauthority.com CORRECTION: I said "think, three times the malt equals three times the alcohol". This is not correct. It's much more complicated than that. I was trying to oversimplify the description of the process to give viewers an easy way to think about the word "tripel" and how it relates to the beer making process. On average a "tripel" is about three time stronger than there "single" beer, but there is a lot going on for the beer to reach that point - including the addition of sugar which we talk about in this show. I hope this is not too misleading to anyone. Feedback? There are only 7 trappist breweries in the world. Westmalle in Belgium is part of that exclusive club. It produces a tripel that is the classic example of the style. If you want to be a beer geek, then you have to drink this beer. Watch this episode to learn more and then head to your local bottle shop to do some "research"! Partial Transcript: "On Tap -- Westmalle Tripel Hi. I'm James Knott and this is your Better Beer Authority. Today we are talking about Westmalle Trappist Ale Tripel from the Trappist Abbey of Westmalle in Westmalle, Belgium. This brewery originally brewed beer for the monks in 1836 and they started selling to the public in the 1870s. I know I said I was going to try to cut back if not eliminate the "ho hum" type beer reviews, and even though I'm not a huge fan of Sam Adams, when I saw they made a new coffee stout I absolutely had to review it.Season 15, Episode 59 BREWERY'S DESCRIPTION & INFORMATION: Our coffee stout is a full bodied, rich stout that supports the espresso character of the coffee. We use 1.5 lbs of Sumatran coffee per barrel. Rich and toasty, the flavor leads with coffee and follows with underlying notes of chocolate, caramel, and dark fruit. Sixpoint Bengali Tiger | Chad'z Beer Reviews #501

Sixpoint is a Brooklyn-based brewery that has been generating A LOT of buzz in the Mid-Atlantic craft beer scene. I've only been able to get their stuff at beer festivals. Until recently, none of their beers have been available on draft or in stores here in Albany. Well we finally get a few of their beers here now, and I was happy to review their famous Bengali Tiger - it's an IPA brewed in the East Coast style. Let's see how good of an example it is....Season 14, Episode 27 BREWERY'S DESCRIPTION & INFORMATION: Sixpoint Bengali Tiger is reminiscent of the century-old English IPA. In my perspective, many current IPAs suffer from lacking substance; unbalanced by a hoppy assertiveness that is not substantiated by a strong foundation of rich malt flavors. Our interpretation uses the highest-quality, floor-malted base malt, which lends a full-bodied and rich caramel flavor. We mash at high temperatures and add generous amounts of specialty malts to further emphasize a strong foundation of malt as leverage for our generous additions of hops... Which are indeed generous. We use a total of three different hop strains, and add a total of six different additions throughout the process. The Bengali Tiger has a hoppy snap upfront, but strides at a steady pace, and finishes balanced. The signature characteristic of the Tiger is the aroma... we use massive quantities of whole East Kent Goldings hops to dry hop in our conditioning tanks. The result? The essential oils from the hops are ...

Samuel Smith's Imperial Stout - Beer Review

BBA T-SHIRTS ARE FOR SALE: www.betterbeerauthority.com This week The Better Beer Authority sips on Samuel Smith's Imperial Stout from the Samuel Smith Brewery in Tadcaster, England. Personally, I thought this was delicious and is my favorite beer of the ones we've reviewed so far. Find out if the rest of the panel is as enthusiastic as I am. Rough Transcript: James: On Tap -- Samuel Smith's Imperial Stout Hi. I'm James Knott and this is your Better Beer Authority. Today we are tasting Samuel Smith's Imperial Stout from the Samuel Smith's Old Brewery in Tadcaster, England. The brewery has been in business since 1758 and their beers have been available in the US since 1978. Sam Smith's Imperial Stout is 7 percent Alcohol by Volume and the brewery points out that the beer is registered with the Vegan Society as vegan friendly. This all-malt beverage is a Russian Imperial Stout. Historically these beers were brewed in Great Britain in the 18th century for shipment to the Russian Czar and the imperial court. They are dark, malty beers with high alcohol content that prevented freezing on the long, cold journey over the Baltic Sea. Scott, what are you picking up in the aroma on this beer? Scott Blickhan: It's got a lot of aroma. It's probably the most aromatic beer we've had to date. It's kind of like an iced latte. It's kind of a cocoa chocolaty. Very fragrant. Literally, it's kind of like drinking an iced coffee. James: Anything fruity in there? Scott: Personally I'm kind of ...
