Vincenzo Bellini - Symphony from "Norma"

Vincenzo Bellini - Symphony from "Norma" www.manfredipomar.com _________________________________________ Vincenzo Salvatore Carmelo Francesco Bellini (November 3, 1801 -- September 23, 1835) was a Sicilian opera composer. Known for his flowing melodic lines, Bellini was the quintessential composer of Bel canto opera. Born in Catania, Sicily, Bellini was a child prodigy from a highly musical family and legend has it he could sing an aria of Valentino Fioravanti at eighteen months, began studying music theory at two, the piano at three, and by the age of five could, apparently, play well. His first composition is said to have dated from his sixth year. Regardless of the veracity of these claims, it is certain that Bellini grew up in a musical household and that a career as a musician was never in doubt. Having learned from his grandfather, Bellini left provincial Catania in June 1819 to study at the conservatory in Naples, with a stipend from the municipal government of Catania. By 1822 he was in the class of the director Nicolò Zingarelli, studying the masters of the Neapolitan school and the orchestral works of Haydn and Mozart. It was the custom at the Conservatory to introduce a promising student to the public with a dramatic work: the result was Bellini's first opera Adelson e Salvini an opera semiseria that was presented at the Conservatory's theater. Bianca e Gernando met with some success at the Teatro San Carlo, leading to an offer from the impresario Barbaia for ...

Another summer hit Hit from the late 90s. Bellini was mostly known by their debut single "Samba Di Janeiro", but after several more tries, the project wasn't that successful, until they came back with this song. The production of the song is apparently by Axel Breitung (Dj Bobo, Bad Boys Blue, etc) I don't know but it seems this video wasn't shooted at all in Brazil, ha ha lol... =) pandisworld.blogspot.com =)

Gary Karr "La Sonnambula" Vincenzo Bellini

Gary Karr performs Variations on La Sonnambula by Giovanni Bottesini from Vincenzo Bellini's 1831 opera La Sonnambula. His facial performance makes this an exceptional piece. Harmon Lewis is on the piano. This is from "An Afternoon with Gary Karr" recorded at the University of Washington. This is a part of the ongoing series Barry Lieberman and Friends. Vincenzo Bellini - Il pirata - "Lo sognai ferito, e sangue" (Montserrat Caballe)

I have to admit to having mixed feelings towards Bellini. On one hand, his "La sonnambula" is a wonderful pastoral work which is beautifully written throughout, as well as a number of selected scenes from other operas (such as Giulietta's moving romanza "Oh! quante volte" or Fernando's enchanting "At tanto duol"). But, for the most part, his operas are not really as rewarding for me as those of the composers sighted above. "Il pirata" with it's excessively romantic story and flashes of brilliance over some strikingly routine music is a prime example. Imogene's cavatina, despite a rather interesting structure of two contrasting ariosos as the heroine accounts her dreams and fears (first - an image of her lover in blood; then - her husband) to a bewildered chorus and then a long, lyrical cabaletta, perhaps, represents both Bellini at his best and at his most uninspired: while there are many individual moments of great beauty in the scene (certainly the swift yet caring coda is extremly appealing), there is a distinct lack of concetrated composition (unlike in the above-mentioned scenes which actually thrive on being prolonged expressions of a single emotion) which can be explained by the needs of the drama, though we still are faced with an aria of disconcerting unevenness. I do not desire to offend anyone's love for the composer (indeed, one would not want to go without the above-mentioned pieces or a number of rich works), I simply wish to state my own mixed feelings when ...

Juan Diego Flórez - Bellini - I Capuletti e I Montecchi - È serbato, a questo acciaro - Caracas

Juan Diego Flórez sings Tebaldo's entrance aria and cabaletta from the first act of Vincenzo Bellini's I Capuletti e I Montecchi. "O di Capellio, generosi amici... E' serbato a questo acciaro... L'amo tanto, e m'è si cara," I honestly have to say Gustavo Dudamel is a failure as an opera conductor. He really sucks. He doesn't care about the singer, he just gets into his world wiht those unnecessary, stupid and silly movements which get me sick. This is bel canto not Mahler!!! As for the orchestra it was completely unnecessary to put almost 180 musicians onstage having in mind that the rossinian, donizettian even bellinian orchestration needs a pure and fluid sound instead of a heavy orchestration which in this case screwed all the bel canto passages up. Vincenzo Bellini - La sonnambula - "Care compagne" (Beverly Sills)

This one is a bit of a rarity. To my knowledge, Beverly Sills never actually undertook the role of the sleepwalking girl from Bellini's opera, but she did record the beautiful cavatina which gives us a good idea of what could have been. I do think it's a bit overornamented but the coloratura "jump" on 8:47 - 8:50 is very impressive as is the facility in coloratura, in general. It's a pity that the cabaletta is a bit cut. So, here it is, hope you enjoy :)!

Vincenzo Bellini - I Capuletti ed i Montecchi - "Ah! crudel, d'onor ragio" (Jennifer Larmore & Hei-Kyung Hong)

In accordance with my recent upload of Giulietta's lovely romanza from Bellini's treatment (some would say the librettist's mistreatment) of Shakespeare's timeless tale of the lovers from Verona, I decided to also upload the lovers' big duet presented here (as well as Romeo's cavatina). We begin with the central andante (to save time, I had to cut the opening statements of the lovers, as well as the tempo di mezzo, though the main structure is preserved) with each lover separately stating their conflicting feelings in a ravishing cantabile. After a short transition, involving a cadenza for Giulietta and several anguishing phrases for Romeo, the emotional weight is lifted even further with the connection of their lines into a strikingly romantic expression of young love. Though the andante is certainly a perfectly lovely section, I have to admit my special penchant for the stretta that follows it, unusually intense, contrasting the lovers' long, elaborate lines with the slightly martial accompaniment (possibly to further highlight the forced departure of Romeo) leading to one of the best codas to a love duet imaginable. I've decided to upload two contrasting versions: one, the "correct" one, with Romeo sung by a woman, here the very impressive Jennifer Larmore joined, again, by Hei-Kyung Hong's gentle Giulietta; another, the "wrong" one, as performed in the 1960s under a young Claudio Abbado's direction, with Giulietta cast as usual, with a lyric soprano, Margherita ...

Vincenzo Bellini - "Torna, vezzosa Fillide" (Lawrence Brownlee)

Although originally set in Milan somewhere around 1827 for soprano, "Torna, vezzosa Fillide" seems to have become somewhat a staple for tenors (similar to Rosina passing to sopranos). While proving a fact that time rewrites the composer's music in one way or another, this concert aria also constitutes, for me, one of Bellini's most openly dramatic pieces, further highlighted by the composer's care for the melody. The piece is set in three movements, though it is not truly as simple as that. The aria is centered around three main musical ideas, each of which, though seemingly independent, are elaborately connected into a scene of rare contrasts. The piece starts innocently enough with a gentle, Rossinian cantabile (the A section), as the hero sings of his love for Fillide whose absence "brings sadness to this shepherd's heart". Nothing makes the listener fell anything but completely contented: we are transported to a rather typical for opera Arcadian setting where the pastor will surely find his love. Or will he? After a repeat of the A section, the mood moves to the minor, the music becoming unsettled and intense, the verses now talk of Fillide's suffering and the suffering of her lover. This constitutes the central B section. The text begins to sound slightly macabre, especially with such an urgent accompaniment: the hero, singing in triplets and sixteenths, accounts how he is desperately trying to find his lover, water (the shore, the river) being a central motive.
