I recently had contact with the director, Jim Yager, and he provided some background on this amazing work of art. Jim: "It was inspired when I saw Na Lei Hulu I Ka Wekiu perform their choreography of this song at KQED for an event. It was one of those lightning strike moments when I saw the whole film produced in my mind's eye as they were dancing gracefully in front of a black curtain. It was just plain serendipity ..." "We filmed Hula SF just a few weeks after 9/11 in 2001. We had been making production plans since mid-summer, and had delayed the production a couple of times as their was so much fear and uncertainty in the air here in the city. We finally spent two days with the dancers in all the locations you see in the video in early October, and I will never forget the response from those watching along the sidelines as we filmed. Tears of joy filled their eyes as Mr Bennett's song permeated the air, and the dancers swayed and told the story with their hands. It was a great emotional release for all of us, I think, and a reminder that their was still simple beauty and romance in a world that had been so tilted off its axis. It was one of those pure experiences I will never ever forget. I figured it would air for a few months on KQED and then be forgotten. Amazingly, it's been on their air nearly every day in <b>...</b>
Tony Bennett - I Left My Heart In San Francisco (Original Stereo)
This, one of the most reknowned recordings in the history of popular music, was composed by George Cory and Douglass Cross in 1954, and it was intended for songstress Claramae Turner who used it as her encore, but she never got around to recording it. In 1962, the song was shown to Tony Bennett who promptly recorded it, and he then appeared on the very first Tonight Show starring Johnny Carson singing "I Left My Heart In San Francisco" where the public as a whole heard it performed by him for the first time. Tony's recording has made it to the RIAA/NEA list as one of the most historically significant songs of the 20th Century. Even a recording as great as this one could only make it to #19 on the charts in September of 1962.

In Aug 1999, Jeff Tweedy and Jay Bennett of Wilco stopped by the Austin Music Network (AMN) to play a couple of tunes that would air on the AMN music video show, "rock.alt". This is a cover of the 1927 Richard "Rabbit" Brown song "James Alley Blues". AMN started broadcasting in 1994 on Time Warner cable channel 15 and went off-air in Aug 2005 due to lack of advertising funding. During it's time, it was the only city-sponsored, non-profit music channel in the world.

Duster Bennett - On Reconsideration
Duster Bennett, being a big master of blues, wrote a few songs which one can'ty easily attribute to any genre of popular music. This one, one of my favourite ones, impresses me with its meaningful lyrics, melodic structure and superb one minute harp intro solo - one of the most expressive harmonica solos I have ever heard. The song ending is somewhat blurred, probably it was just a demo of an unfinished song. Still, I like it a lot. It shows just another, spiritual facet of Duster Bennett's personality.

This is the opening track of Bob Bennett's 1982 album, "Matters of the Heart." This song sets the tone for the rest of the album and he closes with a song called "Heart of the Matter," which means that song and this one form something like bookends for a collection of songs about faith and family and love and the other things that are most important in life -- as opposed to what the material world holds dear. The album was released for the Christian market, so the production budget was obviously low at the time, but I think the song holds up reasonably well despite the production values.

It's getting close to Christmas and I thought it would be a great time to post this beautiful masterpiece from two of the most well-known musicians in jazz history: singer Tony Bennett and piano accompanist Bill Evans. "A Child Is Born" focuses on Jesus Christ, as a babe, a babe born from a manger from the Virgin Mary. Tony Bennett sings from the viewpoint of one who witnesses one of the most miraculous historical events in history. He sings of holding Christ just after He is born from his mother. This spectator gazes at and admires this child and is in total wonder and respect of the one who is called King. The singer realizes how special this child is, calling Him "a work of art". Tony Bennett's vocals are warm, tender, and soft just as the child he is holding and he creates this intimate approach where as there are people surrounding this manger, our attention and our ears is only focused on Bennett and the child. Bill Evans' arrangement is not competing with Bennett but properly accompanying him and Evans plays with a "less is more" approach, making this song a masterpiece in my book. Everything in this song down to Bennett's vocals and his interpretation of the song, to Bill Evans' arrangement, and the lyrics fits like a glove. The song is included on the Tony Bennett/Bill Evans 1976 album 'Together Again", the second album that they both cut together.
