Chad9976 has been doing soda, energy drink, and other non-beer reviews for about a year now, and challenged all of us other video beer reviewers to give it a shot. To sweeten the pot, he said he'd throw in ten bucks to the Red Cross if we did one, or twenty if we did two. So I shot two. This is the first, a soda made by Sprecher in Wisconsin. They make some pretty "okay" beers, and apparently also some pretty "okay" sodas. I call this a "root beer" a couple of times in the review, but that's a slip of the tongue -- it's just a soda, although it has some root-beer-like characteristics.

Port Brewing High Tide Fresh Hop IPA | Beyond the Pour Beer Review

By the time I reviewed this bottle it was a touch under two months old, but this wet-hopped IPA definitely still had plenty of hop punch. This is a new brewery in Birmingham, AL, that doesn't bottle at all yet. I've had this beer a couple of times when I was down south, but haven't bothered to review it until now. A shop called Liquor Express in Huntsville, AL, has draft beer to-go sold in plastic milk jugs, which is the format for this review. Is it a bit hyperbolic to call this beer better than Hopslam? A weird video to shoot and edit. Maybe I was a bit out of practice? Or maybe amazed by how good this beer is. English Special Bitter is one of my all-time favorite beer styles, but it's basically impossible to find a truly superb example. This one is exactly that, but I rated it a tad bit lower because I've come to expect this level of excellence from FFF. A contradiction? Perhaps. Founders Canadian Breakfast Stout (CBS) -- Tasted Alongside KBS! | Beyond the Pour Beer Review


It's been a long wait for this one. Founders Canadian Breakfast Stout (CBS) hasn't even been brewed since 2007. Yeah, I know there are some places that have put it on tap in the last four years, but those are all from kegs produced since 2007. It's a beer that has never, ever been bottled. So when they announced that they would be releasing 750mL bottles as part of their backstage series, the entire beer geek world lost their shit. Myself included. I'm psyched to get to try it, so psyched that I put it ahead of other beers in my upload queue and shot and edited a review the night of release, all in a (likely futile) attempt to get it reviewed first on Youtube. Since I can't guarantee I'll be first, I decided to open up a bottle of Founders KBS as a direct comparison to the maple bourbon-barrel version. In short? Both are awesome beers, although CBS gets a tiny bit cloying as I get to the bottom of the 750mL bottle due to the amount of sugar. I wish it was a 12oz-er instead. The sugar makes this version even smoother than the already very-smooth KBS, but it also masks a lot of the roasty subtleties of the original beer. In short, while both are excellent, I think KBS is actually the better beer. Beyond the Pour grade: A+

Sorry this vlog is so long, but I had a whole lot to talk about this time. As you can tell by how fast I talk in the vid. First, I'm changing the brand I'm using for my beer reviews, to something that people can actually say. Paulaner Oktoberfest Wiesn | Beyond the Pour Beer Review


A couple of people did this one last year, but it didn't show up in my area. I saw it at a local grocery store and decided to buy it, mostly just for the one-liter mug it comes with. It's also a fun (and short!) review. I wasn't aware of this at the time I shot the review, but this beer is a different beer from the standard Paulaner Oktoberfest. This beer is significantly lighter and, according to the can, uses hop extract. Not sure how the last fits in with the Bavarian Purity Law, but that's how it goes. Beyond the Pour grade: B-

Beyond the Pour Vlog 2011-12-12


www.beyondthepour.com This is the last vlog of the year, meant to be posted on Monday but it took longer to edit than I anticipated. I was intending to do a full vlog recap on San Diego, but I think the ninety minutes or so of video I posted (alongside all the video the other guys posted) means I can just give a couple of minutes commentary and thanks. I then talk about what's going on for the rest of 2011 and into 2012. I will be hitting beer review #300 right around Christmas, and then will be taking off from reviews for the week between Christmas and New Year's, and then back in full force in early January. Short's Ale la Reverend Session IPA | Beyond the Pour Beer Review


www.beyondthepour.com It's been a long time since I've done a Short's beer. It's not that I have anything against Short's. Their beers are, at worst, "decent" and at least worthy of review. But whenever I do the local stuff that no one outside the state has easy access to, I find that my pageviews go way down and I'm pretty much just talking to myself. Plus, Short's releases so many beers that I could pretty much make a channel that was just devoted to their releases if I really dedicated myself to it. So why review this one? Well, first of all it's a session IPA, a sub-style that I tend to like a lot. All the flavor of an IPA with less alcohol, hence the ability to drink more of it? Sign me up. Secondly, it's a wedding anniversary ale commemorating Joe Short's own wedding -- as a man trying to plan a wedding of my own, I found it somewhat apropos. Thirdly -- this bottle was all of three days old when it fell into my lap. And if there's one thing I've learned, it's ALWAYS check out IPAs when they're only a handful of days old. Unfortunately this one didn't quite live up to the potential. Still a solid session beer, but nothing worth going out of the way for. Beyond the Pour grade B
