Inspired Bicycles - Danny MacAskill April 2009

Filmed over the period of a few months in and around Edinburgh by Dave Sowerby, this video of Inspired Bicycles team rider Danny MacAskill (more info at www.dannymacaskill.com) features probably the best collection of street/street trials riding ever seen. There's some huge riding, but also some of the most technically difficult and imaginative lines you will ever see. Without a doubt, this video pushes the envelope of what is perceived as possible on a trials bike. Credit to Band of Horses for their epic song 'The Funeral.' You can find out more about the band and their music at www.bandofhorses.com or you can buy the featured song from itunes here: ax.itunes.apple.com

myFOXla.com's Jane Yamamoto reports Bicyclists Claim Excessive Force by LAPD Officers

www.myfoxla.com Published : Monday, 31 May 2010, 1:37 AM PDT Hollywood - The Los Angeles Police Department has begun an investigation into a reported use of force incident involving bicyclists protesting British Petroleum over the ongoing oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. About 400 bicyclists were were traveling eastbound on Hollywood Boulevard, just east of Highland Avenue, about 9:30 pm Friday as Hollywood Area bike unit officers were patrolling the area, watching for red light violations and issuing citations, police said. As officers attempted to detain several bicyclists, a reported use of force was captured on video, police said. The images, apparently shot from the perspective of a bicyclist on the ground and posted on the website Youtube, shows two officers with clubs drawn, one telling the bicyclist to get up, the other says "get down." What happens next is unclear because the video ends as the camera is apparently turned off. "In response to what we learned, we immediately launched a full-scale investigation to determine the facts surrounding the events," LAPD Assistant Chief Earl Paysinger said. "The department's Professional Standards Bureau has taken the lead in the inquiry and the police commission's inspector general has also been made fully aware of the matter." The LAPD Internal Affairs Group is also investigating the incident.

Railroad Spur Track Crossing Technique for Bicyclists.

Most bicyclists grow up in suburbs, far from railroads, so they are unaware of the danger of crashing when crossing a railroad spur track improperly. These crashes can be prevented by observing the drawings and real life crossings in this video, shot from a Rans Tailwind recumbent bike. Spur tracks leave a main rail line, and often cross an adjacent road at a shallow angle before going to a factory or warehouse. To cross safely, a bicyclist needs to check for bike and motor vehicle traffic ahead and behind, and they need to make sure no train is preparing to use the spur track. If the way is clear, the bicyclist should give a "slowing" signal, and then maneuver in such a way to cross each rail at a 90 degree angle, or as close to a 90 degree angle as possible. If there are other motor vehicles or bicyclists approaching, it may be necessary to stay near the curb, give a "slowing" signal, straddle the bike and walk over the crossing. If you try to ride over the rails at a shallow angle, the rails can zing your wheels out from under you, causing a severe crash. This is most likely if the rails ar wet, but it can happen with dry rails too, especially if the rails are higher than the surrounding pavement. I crossed these same crossings for over 10 years as my main commute route between East Point and Morrow, Georgia, USA. I still use this route for other purposes. Some of it is part of the historic Dixie Highway System that connected the midwest with Florida, before the US ...

Naked Bike Ride, Fremont Solstice Parade 2010

The Fremont Fair returns to celebrate community with a toast to summer! Held annually in mid-June to coincide with the Summer Solstice, the event draws more than 100000 people to shop, eat, drink, mingle, groove, and enjoy all manners of creative expression. Artistic highlights include the free-spirited Solstice Parade produced by the Fremont Arts Council. Most participants believe that there is nothing indecent about a naked body and counter that the only thing that is indecent are the laws on indecent exposure. Many contend that the shame is on those who demand coverups, not on those who can go without. You don't have to be naked... Just colorful

ABC 7 Report on Proposal to protect bicyclists from motorists

This report, "Proposal to protect bicyclists from motorists", put together by Gene Gleeson of ABC 7 in Los Angeles aired on Tuesday January 12, 2010. It is a report about a hearing in the Public Safety Committee of the Los Angeles City Council of an proposed ordinance to make it illegal to harass a bicyclists in the City of Los Angeles.Councilman Dennis Zine makes it clear that that he thinks, "... we are a car culture here in Southern California. I don't think we're ever going to change that." Original story link: abclocal.go.com Transcript of the report: With the recession and sky-high transportation costs, more and more bicyclists are trying to share the road with motorists in Los Angeles, but often with bad results. LA-area bicyclists say they've had to put up with a lot from motorists over the years - catcalls, middle fingers and worse. Virgil Orellano is a bicycle messenger who says he's been hit by cars four times in 10 years. Afterward, he says motorists usually just drive away. Because of experiences like that, many say Los Angeles is the most dangerous city in the country for bicyclists. The LA City Council's public safety committee considered a proposal on Monday to make it illegal for motorists to harass bicyclists. Part of the proposal would require motorists driving past cyclists to get no closer than 3 feet. "They do have equal rights to the road as does a motorist, but they're not being treated as if they do have equal rights," said Aurisha Smolarski of ...

Bicyclist Killed by Car; Driver Regrets Car Damage

Voiceover: Here's the scene of tragedy of two friends who took a night trip by bicycle, moving toward Herzen Street. The road was allegedly unoccupied and both bicycles had their lights on. Survivor: Yes, I was in the front, he was in the back, in the back. The car...it was this one... Text: Oleksiy Bashkirtsev was 22. He was hit to death. Male eyewitness 1: I saw it. It's very scary. The bicyclists rode on Melnykov St. They didn't cross anything, they rode on the curb. And this car drove at a speed of probably up to 180 km/h, and it hit them directly. Of this I'm 100% sure. We saw it. Reporter: Did they have their lights on? Male eyewitness 1: Yes, they had their lights on and they rode well, without speeding, nothing like that. He just hit them directly. Text: In the first decade of June, four bicyclists have been hit. In three cases, the drivers fled from the crime scene. Male voice: How could this man, this bicyclist... Male eyewitness 2: The bicyclists rode... Female eyewitness: He exited the vehicle through the window. What are you talking about? He didn't use the door, he used the window. Traveling from Los Angeles Ca. to St Augustine Fl. Mr. Smart is from Loveland Co. Mr. Smart was riding his bike through the town-heard music playing saw lots of cars parked thought it was a band setting up being an adventure lover he headed for all the commotion along the levee. He was approached by Mr. Ben Hood and Hood asked Mr. Smart if he would like a beer and the rest is history Mr. Smart was now a part of Big Johns graduation party. I have lived in Louisiana most of my life and that is not uncommon for you to be invited to an event not having any knowledge of any occasion or the people you just met. Some times you could just go for a stroll and find yourself having the time of your life. His trip will take him to Oak Alley a place that I have passed many times but never stopped. That building has been in so many films he will have stories to tell about that place. When he gets to New Orleans I wish him the best the town is not 100% yet he will have plenty of stories about that place too and believe him they are going to be unbelievable but they are going to all be true. To see such devastation in the USA is unbelievable to have seen it 3 months after was beyond numbing. Knowing they are to this day finding bodies of victims is unfathomable. He plans to fly back to Colorado when he gets to St.Augustine Fl. UNICEF: Norwegian bicyclists raise funds for UNICEF

DAMASCUS, Syrian Arabic Republic, 23 February 2010 Fundraisers worldwide go to extraordinary lengths to help UNICEF alleviate child suffering. And going to great lengths is something Andreas Doppelmayer, Øyvind Handberg and Jørn Pedersen three UNICEF fundraisers from Norway know a lot about. They are cycling roughly 20000 kilometres from Norway to South Africa in a bid to raise $84000 for UNICEF education projects. By the time the cyclists reach their final destination, they will have passed through some 20 countries and spent more than a year on the road. Six months into their trip and passing through the Syrian Arabic Republic the fundraisers recently took time to rest and visit a UNICEF-funded child-friendly space in Qudsaya, a sprawling suburb on the outskirts of Damascus, the Syrian capital. Qudsaya is home to many refugees who have fled violence in Iraq since 2003. "Since we are cycling to raise money for UNICEF, it's inspiring to actually go to see UNICEF work," said Mr. Doppelmayer.
