Professor Longhair plays Big Chief, rare recording from the 1973 Montreux Jazz Festival. (I have been searching a long time for a live performance of Fess playing this tune -other than the version with Earl King and Dr. John- and finally found this one which I guess completes the other Montreux footage on youtube. Since it hasn't been uploaded here previously, I just had to register an account and upload it so that others may enjoy this gem.) I have listened to lots of versions of this song performed by different pianists on youtube and in my opinion (maybe beacuse i grew up listening to his recordings) nobody comes even close to playing this piece as well as Fess does . There is just something unique to his playing style, how he fully masters the rythmic components of each tune he plays and the richness in note variations but still keeping a 100% pure blues feel to it. That's what takes it to a whole different level, it's "raw" but polished at the same time but there is nothing mechanical to it which is my main reproach to many other versions I have heard. You either have it or you don't, that's the essence of the blues. And so I guess it is fair to say that Professor Longhair just had it more than most others. Feel that energy and intensity! His music is magical, spellbinding and puts you in a trance in the same way good Gospel can. Enjoy!

Big Chief Bo Dollis is at the end of this video. He is the focus of this meeting of Mardi Gras indians. While the Rex Krewe rolled down St. Charles Avenue, Mardi Gras Indians paraded on the backstreets of New Orleans. This meeting of the Big Chief of the Wild Red Flames and Big Chief Bo Dollis of the Wild Magnolias took place at 2nd and Dryades Streets. Big Chief Bo is under the feathered arch at the end of the clip. He is flanked by Big Queen Rita and the rest of his tribe. A typical band of musicians followed the Flames playing percussion instruments providing backdrop for the Indian chant "Lets Go Get Em."

One of my all time favorite albums, the Wild Tchoupitoulas was founded by George Landry aka Big Chief Jolly. Released in 1976, it was also the start of the formation of Landry's nephews, the Neville Brothers, Art, Charles, Aaron & Cyril, respectively. The instrumentation was provided mainly by the Meters, Art & Cyril Neville, Leo Nocentelli, George Porter Jr., & Joseph "Zigaboo" Modeliste. The album was also produced in large part by Allen Toussaint. This is an essential part of the rich musical New Orleans heritage, and I ask if you enjoy this music, pick up the album & pass the word to keep this joyful music alive.

Not only were they updating the sound of Detroit '69 prior to the grunge sweepstakes of the early '90s, but they gradually incorporated their fanboy obsessions with funk and Blaxploitation flicks well before the revivals caught on with the masses. Most of the groups that followed these stylistic hybrids in the mid- to late '90s probably never heard the band that was honing this style a few years before them. But Big Chief were more about making fun records, rather than adding a generous amount of forced rebellion for marketing value. They were hardly original, but they were a couple bases ahead of the platinum acts that followed. Rebirth Brass Band "Big Chief" Live at the Maple Leaf
We had the distinct honor of filming the Rebirth Brass Band at their regular Tuesday-night spot, the Maple Leaf Bar in Uptown New Orleans. We wanted to throw a quick video together of the band playing a Carnival staple, "Big Chief" to kick off the 2011 Mardi Gras weekend in style. We filmed the band using five cameras. Our wide angle was a Sony HDV camera; closeups were done with a Canon 550d; shots of the band from the crowd was filmed on a Canon 1D MK4; the back line was filmed using a Canon 60d mounted on a strong arm; and crowd shots were filmed with a Canon 7d. Audio production, engineering and mixing was done by Michael Seaman using Pro Tools. Cameramen: Alejandro de los Rios, Jonathan Bachman, Greg Rhoades, and Tyler Kaufman.
