It is a quadruped robot that walks, runs, and climbs on rough terrain and carries heavy loads. BigDog is powered by a gasoline engine that drives a hydraulic actuation system. BigDog's legs are articulated like an animal's, and have compliant elements that absorb shock and recycle energy from one step to the next. BigDog is the size of a large dog or small mule, measuring 1 meter long, 0.7 meters tall and 75 kg weight. BigDog has an on-board computer that controls locomotion, servos the legs and handles a wide variety of sensors. BigDog's control system manages the dynamics of its behavior to keep it balanced, steer, navigate, and regulate energetics as conditions vary. Sensors for locomotion include joint position, joint force, ground contact, ground load, a laser gyroscope, and a stereo vision system. Other sensors focus on the internal state of BigDog, monitoring the hydraulic pressure, oil temperature, engine temperature, rpm, battery charge and others. So far, BigDog has trotted at 3.3 mph, climbed a 35 degree slope and carried a 120 lb load. BigDog is being developed by Boston Dynamics with help from Foster Miller, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and the Harvard University Concord Field Station.Development is funded by the DARPA Defense Sciences Office.

For a couple years now, robotics innovators at Boston Dynamics have been working on a DARPA funded mule designed to carry heavy equipment for military foot soldiers. It's called BigDog, and is relatively adept at keeping astride, despite rough terrain. Also, it super funny to kick it over and watch it scramble like a surprised fawn. Well, BigDog has now become AlphaDog. AlphaDog is bigger, more stable, can carry more stuff, and is even able to get up from a fall on it's side without assistance. Unfortunately, it's about 45% less hilarious. Still pretty cool, though!

Comedian, talk show host, and noted car collector Jay Leno opened up his Big Dog Garage for the North American debut of the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG hosting a select group of automotive journalists to his view priceless automotive, motorcycle and historic transportation collection. The garage itself is about 17000 square feet, sizeable, to say the least, for a private garage, which is enough space to work on about a dozen cars at any one given time. About a quarter of that space is taken up by the machine shop, which includes a massive amount of equipment First and foremost, the garage is not a museum. Jay makes his purchases not as museum pieces, but because he enjoys driving the cars and motorcycles all of them! From Stanley Steamers to Duesenbergs to McLarens, Jay and his collection are fixtures in the Southern California area and can often be spotted out for weekend rides and the occasional breakdown on the side of the road. Stanley Steamers may be fun to drive, but 1906 technology isn't the most reliable in the world. As a whole, the collection spans 100 years of automotive history.
