Bill Spaceman Lee: High & Outside -- Film Trailer

In the 1970s, Red Sox pitcher Bill Lee aka, "Spaceman" became a folk hero to the Fenway faithful. He lived in a world like no other; where competitive fire, Tibetan Buddhism, slapstick comedy, social activism, and counter-cultural medication co-existed in relative harmony. He baffled opposing hitters and management alike with a variety of pitches and verbal aerobatics. As a pioneer in the baseball labor movement, he beanballed corporate duplicity and worked to end the era of indentured servitude in baseball. Was he blackballed from the game as a result? Bill Spaceman Lee: High & Outside is a new documentary film on the life of the controversial Spaceman, the last true rebel hero in Major League Baseball. He was the right man for his times. He is the right man for our times.

Warren Zevon- Bill Lee

lyrics and music by Warren Zevon You're supposed to sit on your ass and nod at stupid things Man, that's hard to do And if you don't, they'll screw you And if you do, they'll screw you, too And I'm standing in the middle of the diamond all alone I always play to win When it comes to skin and bone And sometimes I say things I shouldn't Like.... And sometimes I say things I shouldn't Like....

1976 Red Sox Yankees fight - Bill Lee hurt

Piniella tried to score from second and looked like he would be an easy out. The throw from rightfielder Dwight Evans handcuffed Carlton Fisk, however, and Piniella slammed into the Boston catcher who was blocking the plate. The full-fledged brawl that ensued around the pitcher's mound.

Montreal Expo Bill Lee

For ten years, Lee had been an accomplished pitcher with Boston but as the 1979 season began, he had now to cope with the fact that he was now a precious left-handed asset to a team across the border called the Expos. As Bill now puts it himself: "If you're gonna get deported, it might as well be to the Paris of North America". So he'd been traded to the Expos after the 1978 season and Montreal had sent in return Stan Papi to the Red Sox (thank you very much and please do come again as often as you want). In Montreal, Spaceman was always a fan favourite and still is today by the way. Even in his playing days, he'd never shy away from shooting pool with local everyday people and when teammate and friend Rodney Scott was released, he even left a note inviting boss Jim Fanning to join him at the nearest poolroom so he could kick his ass in the parking lot. It didn't take much more to get him blacklisted from anything major league stamped but little did they know, Spaceman would never stop pitching nonetheless at various levels and in different leagues in the world. Bill is still winning games in his sixties, only carrying around his glove and love of the game. Nuf said. Here he is ladies and gents: Le lanceur, the pitcher, le numéro 37, number 37, BILL LEE! Please note that I don't own any of these pics and song's copyrights. Enjoy! 2008 Midnight Sun Game - Bill Lee, Extra

Here are some of the best quotes from Bill while in Alaska.

fairbanks alaska baseball league Panner Vision

Spaceman: A Baseball Odyssey

Throughout the 1970's, Bill Lee was the ultimate gonzo baseball player, a brilliant left-handed pitcher who flouted every manager or front office executive that tried to control him. The fans loved him and so did the sportswriters who delighted in asking the unusual baseball questions, only to get philosophical responses. Out of professional baseball since 1983, Lee was left to roam the world in search of a chance to play the game he loves. Harkening back to the days of barnstormers like the mythical Satchel Paige, who traveled the globe in search of good baseball, Lee's dventures have taken him across the United States to China, Russia, South America, and every province in Canada. The film follows Lee, at fifty-seven years young, on a weeklong journey to the impoverished baseball mecca of Cuba. Along the way, we hear from former teammates, family members, sportswriters, fans, and especially Lee himself, about the unique life and career that spawned the legend of a ballplayer who will forever be known as simply, the Spaceman.
