While surfers in the Northern Hemisphere await the arrival of El Niño-fueled big winter waves, there has been no shortage of massive swells around the world in the last six months. Just last week, Shipstern Bluff -- a notoriously shallow wave off the southern tip of Tasmania, Australia -- produced some of the most spectacular rides of the year and triggered numerous entries into the BILLABONG XXL GLOBAL BIG WAVE AWARDS. Spawned by a massive storm in the Southern Ocean, the huge swell was challenged by a group of big wave chargers including Aussies MARTI PARADISIS and KARL ATKINS, who used jet powered watercraft to tow into the towering walls of water. Visiting surfer JAMES HICK -- who hails from the unlikely hometown of Jersey, England -- accomplished some of the day's most heart-stopping rides. The devilish Tasmanian surf session also featured its share of spectacular wipeouts. Despite the bone-jarring impacts, there were no serious injuries. Several successfully completed waves are now candidates for the BILLABONG XXL RIDE OF THE YEAR AWARD and its US$50000 first prize. The Billabong Clipper has been refitted as the "ultimate surfing exploration craft." The propeller-driven airplane is 62-feet long, has a wingspan of 96 feet, can fly more than 3000 miles before refueling, and has a maximum speed of 250 miles per hour. Hawaiian began interisland service for Hawaii on November 11, 1929, using two Sikorsky S-38 amphibian propeller planes. Hawaii's first commercial aircraft had a carrying capacity of eight passengers and two crewmembers, and a top cruising speed of 110 miles per hour.

Dare devil surfers from around the globe have converged on the small Pacific island of Tahiti to ride the swell of the year at the famed Teahupoo (Cheo-poo) reef break. A handful of die hard chargers including Hawaiian Big Wave legend SHANE DORIAN, local Teahupoo specialist MANOA DROLLET (Drol-Lay) and Australian ace DYLAN LONGBOTTOM (Gold Coast) conquered monstrous 6m waves in ideal conditions. The heaving left hander which is recognised as the heaviest wave on earth, breaks over razor sharp coral reef and due to the velocity of the swells, surfers must be towed in with the assistance of Personal Water Craft (PWC). While a number of crews descended on the break, it was the local experience of DROLLET coupled with the mind blowing antics of DORIAN who dominated the session, riding the biggest and deadliest waves. The surfers are all vying for contention in the Billabong XXL Global Big Wave Awards which recognise the biggest and most challenging waves captured on film and imagery in a 12 month period and carry a $USD 92500 total prize pool.
