BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE: Shahnaz Hussain was born in 1950 in village Shergarh, district Okara [Punjab], which is located to the south-west of Lahore. Her family belongs to the Sayyed class and owns a substantial amount of farmland. Shahnaz has two siblings [a sister and brother]. At young age, Shahnaz was a rebellious person. She left home without her parent consent to seek a movie career in Karachi, where her sister lived at the time. But events did not turn out the way Shahnaz had imagined; She could not establish a foothold in the Urdu movie industry as a mainstream actress. However, this did not influence her committment and determination to make it in the Urdu movie industry. She just left Karachi for Lahore. In Lahore, she got a chance in a pashto movie named "Da Pukhtun Thora" that made her the heart throb of millions of pashtuns. In subsequent years, she had the opportunity to play memorable roles in pashto movies including Khana Badoosh, Dehqaan, Chagha and Da Marg Saudagar. Of these, Chagha and Da Marg Saudagar were released in Urdu language as well. Shahnaz did not want to be confined to pashto movie roles, and seriously weighed her options. She wanted to be known for her talent in Urdu movie; thus she married Urdu and Punjabi movie director Iqbal Kashmiri with the expectation of promoting her movie career in Urdu movies. Pashto film actor Amaan was born in Bannu, Pakhtunkhwa in mid 1940s. He started his film career with pashto movie "Kala Kazan Kala Bahar" which was produced before Yousaf Khan Sherbano but released later in 1972. It was a total failure, reducing Amaan's chances of success as actor. He did play a few memorale roles as a villian. His well known pashto movies included Tarbur, Dara Khybar, ZarTaja, Jang aw Aman, Deedan, Arman and Navay Da Yao Ssphay. Amaan quit the film industry in early 1990s and moved Peshawar to try his luck in Peshawar Television Station. He appeared in one pashto TV serial in 1997. I recall seeing him in Peshawar Sadar at the Artist Equity Association Office. It is not clear where Amaan is currently settled. KISHWAR SULTAN - A Biographical Note: Kishwar Sultan was born in Peshawar in 1936. She died in 2002. She was the only child of Chaudry Roshan Khan (father) and Bakht Nissa (mother). She did not have brothers and sisters of her own but had 4 step brothers (named Nadir, AbduRehman, Meer Ahmed, and Mumtaz). She got her basic education from her husband Mr. Tariq Mahmood, enabling her to read and write Pashto and Urdu. She grew up in Peshawar and was a typical house wife who took care of her kids. She was introduced to Radio station Peshawar in the early 1950s by her aunt Chishti Chamman Jan, who herself was a well known pashto singer at that time. Popular singers and musicians at the time included Sabar-Un-Nisa, Bacha Zarin Jan, Ustad Dilbar Raj (famous music director and singer at the Radio station, Dehli), Rahdat Hussain (music director and harmoniam player), Barkat Shaheen (music director and singer at the Radio station, Dehli), and Shireen Khan (rabab player). Her first song (written by poet Gulistan) was: Ya Illahi rawalay yao zal guli khandan Her last song recorded in 1991 (essentially a remix of her own old song) was: Zar sham maida maida maida maida, qurban sham warray, warra warra raza.
