Thousands of Indonesians are making their own contribution in the fight against climate change by cooking with a type of stove that does not use kerosene or gas. Cheap and easy to use, the inventor of the biomass stove says, it can utilise biowaste like nutshells, dramatically reducing the imprint on the environment. This is a stove I made to efficiently cook with biomass. The basket insert shown is for wood pellets but it can use other combustibles such as wood chips, sticks, charcoal and biomass briquettes etc. Several different burn baskets inserts are in the works including the other one shown that will have a bellows hook up in a future video and perhaps an alcohol insert too. I find wood pellets to be a great advantage because they burn hot and steady for at least 30 minutes with one charge. Fresh pellets can be loaded in the coal catch pot which preheat, begin to burn and can then be used to "top up" giving you continuous cooking. In response, French NGOs have developed an alternative - charbriquets made from coconut shells and dried organic waste. The fuel does not use chopped lumber - giving it a clear advantage. The briquets are inexpensive and burn longer than wood. On December 5, 2011 Gainesville city police, at the behest of Gainesville Regional Utilities officials, warned three citizens that they would be arrested if they continued to stand on GRU property and talk with GRU customers about the coming GREC biomass-rate-hikes, and about opportunities for participating in the political process to seek redress the effects of the more-than-$3-billion GRU-GREC biomass deal. These three citizens -- Dallas E. Priest, Harold W. Saive and Deborah L. Martinez -- and others, for more than a week, over their lunch hours, have been exercising their constitutionally-protected right of assembly. But no assembly occurred today, because for more than 24 hours after GRU officials sent GPD officers to issue trespass warnings yesterday these citizens they still had not been given a written explanation of what they were prohibited from doing and saying on GRU property. This afternoon these citizens finally were handed a copy of "Incident Investigation Report 02-11-025296" (a public record available to any citizen) that specifically explained to them why they were ordered off of GRU property, and what they must avoid talking about on GRU property to avoid arrest. The Reed grass is harvested several times a year and has no local value, therefore the grass is been made into fuel pellets. These grass pellets can be burnt in suitable biomass pellet stoves and boilers. The reed grass when harvested has a moisture content below 15% which makes it suitable for making pellets in the pellet mill without the need for drying. In the pellet plant process first the grass is sent through a shredder to reduce the grass to particles roughly an inch long. The grass is then collected from the shredder via a fan and placed into a silo via a cyclone seperator. The silo is fitted with several proximity sensors that alert the operator if the pellet plant is low on material. The grass is then metered into a hammer mill which is fitted with a 5mm screen. The grass is then sent via an auger to the hopper on the ring die pellet mill. There the grass is mixed to provide consistency, and additional water or vegetable oil maybe added to adjust the compression within the pellet mill die. The grass is then processed through the ring die pellet mill into 8mm fuel pellets suitable for some biomass pellet stoves and most biomass boilers. During the implementation of then COFREEN project scientists discovered that it is important to arrive at complex solutions. Solutions where reeds are cut locally for thatching while residue is used for heat insulation blocks and fuel materials. Due to the problematic handling of reeds it would not be useful to work only within one or another area of use. The key benefits from the reed processing would be increasing the biological diversity of the environment, the use of a biological, natural material and facilitating employment of local farmers.
