Teena Marie RIP, BlackTree catches up for one last interview

Ironically I was editing this piece when I got word that Teena Marie passed suddenly of a heart attack, and while it hurt my heart to hear it, as I turned on my copy of Portugeese Love, I realized that she will always be here through her music. Teena Marie died today at 54 when her daughter found her dead at her home of an apparent heart attack. ; more details to come. The four times grammy nominated, Mary Christine Brockert had a strong African-American influence from her godmother. Blessed with the gift of music at a young age, the Santa Monica, California native grew up in the historically African-American enclave of Oakwood in westside Los Angeles. Raised on Motown music and Singing Harry Belafonte music by age two, Ms. Marie's self-professed "Gift from God" would become fine-tuned as the years progressed. As a child, she had an acting role on The Beverly Hillbillies, credited as Tina Marie Brockert. She also sang at the wedding of actor Jerry Lewis's son when she was 10 years old. Marie worked briefly at Mar Vista's Pup 'n' Taco in the mid 1970s while attending Venice High School, where she joined the Summer Dance Production, and also had a role in the school's production of The Music Man.[5] In a recent television interview she noted she drove a Chevy Vega during this period. Its mission is to get these stories to children everywhere-particularly those growing up in situations of poverty, racial and ethnic minorities, or youth at-risk of gang involvement -- have no experience or little exposure to systemic, proactive and targeted positive media that is rooted in education and culture. There are nearly 16 million US households with children under five years-old. When Karyn was growing up (around the age of five), her mother, a librarian in South Central Los Angeles, would often share stories with her daughter of African-American accomplishment. OUR FAMILY WEDDING, America Ferrera discusses culture, perfect timing and her new film

www.blacktree.tv BlackTree TVs, Naja Hill, sits down with America Ferrera to talk about her new film Our Family Wedding. In this discussion, America talks about what role her culture and family played in her acting career and how perfect timing has led to some of her successes and opportunities. "Our marriage, their wedding." It's lesson number one for any newly engaged couple, and Lucia (America Ferrera) and Marcus (Lance Gross) are no exception. In Fox Searchlight Pictures' OUR FAMILY WEDDING, they learn the hard way that the path to saying "I do" can be rife with familial strife. When they return from college and too suddenly announce their marriage plans, they soon discover that their fathers - two highly competitive over-the-top egos - can wreak a major amount of havoc on their special day. With insults flying and tempers running high, it's anyone's guess if the alpha dads (Forest Whitaker and Carlos Mencia) will survive to make it down the aisle in one piece. Lucia's mother (Diana Maria Riva) is busy planning the wedding of "her" dreams and the only levelheaded one in the bunch is Angela (Regina King), the groom's father's best friend and lawyer, who manages to keep her cool when the madness reaches a crescendo. With only weeks to plan their wedding, Lucia and Marcus soon discover the true meaning of love and find there is truth to the saying - that when you marry someone, you marry their entire family. Frozen River - Melissa Leo and Misty Upham on Stereotypes

BlackTree TV Host Jessica Boyd, sits down with the stars from the film Frozen River, which made a lot of noise at this years Sundance Film Festival. SHORTSYNOPSIS Frozen River is the story of Ray Eddy, an upstate New York trailer mom who is lured into the world of illegal immigrant smuggling when she meets a Mohawk girl who lives on a reservation that straddles the US-Canadian border. Broke after her husband takes off with the down payment for their new doublewide, Ray reluctantly teams up with Lila, a smuggler, and the two begin making runs across the frozen St. Lawrence River carrying illegal Chinese and Pakistani immigrants in the trunk of Ray's Dodge Spirit. DIRECTOR'SSTATEMENT I wrote this film after learning about women smugglers at the border of New York State and Canada who drive their cars across the frozen St. Lawrence River to make money to support their kids. The risk involved compelled me to write a story, not only about smuggling at the northern border, but also about what life circumstances would lead someone to take such chances. What I discovered was that a mother's instinct to protect her children is more powerful than any cultural, political or economic boundary line. Melissa Leo (Ray) and Misty Upham (Lila) embodied the unheralded struggle of single mothers of all ethnicities who are living on the edge. Justin Bieber - Never Say Never Musical Documentary

www.blacktree.tv With the trailer out, fans can now begin counting down to Valentine's Day weekend 2011 when Justin Bieber's 3-D flick, "Never Say Never," hits theaters. And the movie's director, Jon Chu, explained just how he plans to integrate the concert footage, shot earlier this year at Bieber's show at Madison Square Garden, with the behind-the-scenes footage and interviews that he will also be using in the film. for more stay tuned to http "We had this sort of hyperlink idea through the film, which is what makes it really an interesting movie," Chu said. "It's not like the other concert films where you are onstage and then go backstage and then onstage and go backstage. It's not just the concert ... this is a musical documentary, when words aren't enough in telling the stories of his life, [we use music]." For example, Chu continued, "You know, if he's talking about his youth and talking about his magnetic smile, you start to hear 'U Smile' start to creep in the background and the underscore ... you see images from his life, and at the end of that song, the spotlight from the number connects with the spotlight of his tour bus and he goes back into his bed," Chu explained. "And there [are] hyperlinked ideas. It's kind of like 'Chicago,' when we're weaving in and out." And for the haters, Chu says that this film will prove that Bieber is the real deal. "The number-one thing we wanted was the honesty in this," he explained. "People have a very preconceived notion of ...

BlackTree TV's own Brooke Christopher sits down with Terrence Howard and gets his take on the significance of Disney's The Princess and the Frog. The relevance of this picture in discussing Dr. Kenneth Clark's Doll test, and just what it means to be a Disney animated character. JAMES (voice of Terrence Howard) is Tianas inspiration and she is the legacy of his love. A strong, loving father who has instilled his daughter with her ethics and with a familiar bond in New Orleans residents: their love of good food. You see, James tells little Tiana, food brings folk together from all walks o life. It warms em right up, and puts smiles on their faces—and when I open my own restaurant people are gonna line up for miles, just to get a taste of my food. Our food, Tiana lovingly corrects him. Supervising animator Ruben Aquino says, Its the core of what she wants and why she is the way she is. Ive got to sell the audience on showing how much love there is in the family and how James loves Tiana so much. He is always present in Tianas heart. During the 1940s, psychologists Kenneth Bancroft Clark and his wife, Mamie Phipps Clark designed a test to study the psychological effects of segregation on black children. John Singleton's new movie Abduction HD

[BlackTree TV - Los Angeles] the first trailer for John Singleton's Taylor Lautner starring action thriller 'Abduction.' The film focuses on a youth (Lautner) who discovers the parents who raised him aren't his real parents, a revelation that triggers events and leaves him running for his life. This trailer receives a resounding ho-hum from me, Lautner's acting looks slightly epically wooden. In addition to Lautner, 'Abduction' stars Lily Collins, Sigourney Weaver, Danny Glover, Alfred Molina, Michael Nyqvist, Maria Bello, and Jason Isaacs. 'Abduction' is set for release September 23rd. What would you do if you found your own picture on a missing persons website? Teen Nathan Harper (Taylor Lautner) finds himself facing this very dilemma. Setting out to uncover his real identity, Nathan quickly learns his parents are far from who they say they are. When the police, government agents and shadowy figures start to pursue him, Nathan's quest for the truth erupts into a full-blown "Bourne"-like man-on-the-run thriller. for more log onto: www.blacktreemedia.com

Iron Man 2, returns with a 2nd trailer, and its better than the first 1!!!!!

www.blacktree.tv When the first Iron Man movie was in production, Terrence Howard talked about a three-picture arc for his character, James "Rhodey" Rhodes. The film even set up Rhodey's War Machine action in the sequel, when he looked longingly at the Mark II suit and said, "Next time." Then, in October, Marvel announced that Don Cheadle would be filling in the role Howard originated in the sequel. In the time since that surprising casting news, Marvel has reportedly had troubled in casting negotiations with Samuel L. Jackson (as Nick Fury) and Mickey Rourke (as Whiplash) and has had to replace Emily Blunt with Scarlett Johansson (as Black Widow). Now, with Iron Man 2 going into production without him, Howard spoke frankly about Marvel's decision. Howard spoke with a group of reporters on Saturday in Beverly Hills, Calif., where he was promoting the action drama Fighting. The following Q&A features edited excerpts of that interview. We were really looking forward to you continuing in Iron Man 2 and 3. What happened? Howard Iron Man happened with that. Marvel happened with it. They made a choice. They made a very, very bad choice. They didn't keep their word. They didn't honor our contract. They sent everyone out into a field and told them to work and produce a great bounty. You produce a great bounty, and then when it's all in the storehouse, you are not allowed into the storehouse. Does that have anything to do with what went on with Samuel L. Jackson and Nick Fury ...

Ken Jeong talks "Gay Monkeys" and The HangOver 2

[BlackTree TV - Los Angeles] BlackTree TV's Jamaal Finkley sits down with one of the fan favorites from the HangOver series, Ken Jeong who reprises his role as Mr. Chow in HangOver 2 in this edition of Monday Night conversation.. In the summer of 2009, Todd Phillips' "The Hangover" became a record-breaking hit, surpassing all expectations, including those of the filmmakers. "We set out to make a funny movie, but you never know until you start showing it to people. Once we began screening it, we realized it was something special. But we were really surprised when it just took off," acknowledges Phillips, who directed and co-wrote "The Hangover Part II." Dan Goldberg, who served as a producer on "The Hangover," returns as a producer on the sequel, marking his sixth collaboration with Phillips. He recalls, "We knew we had a movie that made people laugh, but no one could have predicted 'The Hangover' would become this incredible phenomenon, least of all us. And then it kept building, which was amazing and so gratifying." "There was some kind of lightning in a bottle that the first film captured," observes Ed Helms, returning in the role of Stu, who is—this time officially—the groom. "We found it to be hilarious, but you can't be sure until a movie is out there if it's going to resonate with anybody else. Thankfully, it did." KEN JEONG (Mr. Chow) returns in the role of the Asian mobster from Todd Phillips' hit comedy "The Hangover." Jeong currently plays the recurring role of ...

Armie Hammer does double the work in The Social Network

www.blacktree.tv The tagline of the movie reads something like 'with 500 million friends you are bound to make a few enemies', and actor Armie Hammer is playing the role of two of them as he plays the role of the Winklevoss twins, BOTH OF THEM! The Winklevoss twins were two of the several people that tied up Mark Zuckerberg in legal precedings as they laid claim to the creation of FaceBook. I had a chance to sit down with Armie Hammer (great grandson of oil tycoon Armand Hammer) at the prestigious Harvard Club in NYC to find out if they paid him double for doing such a great job in this film. On a fall night in 2003, Harvard undergrad and computer programming genius Mark Zuckerberg sits down at his computer and heatedly begins working on a new idea. In a fury of blogging and programming, what begins in his dorm room soon becomes a global social network and a revolution in communication. A mere six years and 500 million friends later, Mark Zuckerberg is the youngest billionaire in history... but for this entrepreneur, success leads to both personal and legal complications. From director David Fincher and screenwriter Aaron Sorkin comes The Social Network, a film that proves you don't get to 500 million friends without making a few enemies. The film is produced by Scott Rudin, Dana Brunetti, Michael De Luca, and Ceán Chaffin and based on the book "The Accidental Billionaires" by Ben Mezrich. Alice in Wonderland - Johnny Depp and Tim Burton continue to make movie magic together

www.blacktree.tv Johnny Depp went into great detail at the "Alice in Wonderland" junket on Saturday (Feb. 20) to explains his affinity for -- and his development of -- the madcap milliner, the Mad Hatter. Seems the hatter's crazy behavior -- and the phrase 'mad as a hatter' has a basis in fact. The mercury used in the trade of hat-making caused irreversible brain damage and it was common for hatters to develop mental, physical and emotional problems. " The mercury solution was used -- not in the glue -- but in the process of turning fur into felt and was subsequently breathed in by the hatters, who would exhibit trembling, loss of coordination, slurred speech, loosening of teeth, memory loss, depression, anxiety, etc. Depp decided to explore the tragic nature of the Mad Hatter "This guy was damaged goods, physically and emotionally obtuse. He decided that as opposed to being a "hyperactive nutty guy," we should explore "all sides of his personality at extreme levels, from levity to... dangerous rage." And the mercury also explains why the Hatter was "investigating things beginning with the letter M." "It was interesting trying to map it out," Depp explains. Burton then jumps in, "Being a Disney movie, we decided not to focus too much on the mercury poisoning aspect." Cue nervous laughter. There are still modern concerns about mercury poisoning coming from higher levels found in the fish we eat, as well as in paint, pesticides, mercury tooth fillings, cosmetics, floor ...

Crazy Stupid Love Interview w/ Emma Stone

[BlackTree TV - New York] We've been seeing a lot of Emma Stone lately, she has quickly become one of Hollywood's most sought after actors. Not only did we catch up with her for The Help, but she also stars in Crazy Stupid Love. At fortysomething, straight-laced Cal Weaver (Steve Carell) is living the dream— good job, nice house, great kids and marriage to his high school sweetheart. But when Cal learns that his wife, Emily (Julianne Moore), has cheated on him and wants a divorce, his "perfect" life quickly unravels. In today's single world, Cal, who hasn't dated in decades, stands out as the epitome of un-smooth. Spending his free evenings sulking alone at a local bar, the hapless Cal is taken on as wingman and protégé to handsome lothario Jacob Palmer (Ryan Gosling). In an effort to help Cal get over his wife and start living his life, Jacob opens Cal's eyes to the many options before him: flirty women, manly drinks and a sense of style that can't be found at Supercuts or The Gap. Cal and Emily aren't the only ones looking for love in what might be all the wrong places: Cal's 13-year-old son, Robbie (Jonah Bobo), is in love with his 17-year-old babysitter, Jessica (Analeigh Tipton), who harbors a major crush of her own...on Cal. And even Jacob's new-woman-every-night modus operandi is challenged when he tries his best lines on Hannah (Emma Stone), a girl he just can't seem to get out of his mind—maybe because she's the first woman he's ever met who doesn't think this ...

Sergei Bodrov discusses Mongol, Leadership and History

BlackTree TV, Producer, Jamaal Finkley sits down with Sergei Bodrov to discuss Life, History, Religion and his new movie Mongol. Award-winning Russian filmmaker Sergei Bodrov (PRISONER OF THE MOUNTAINS) illuminates the life and legend of Genghis Khan in his stunning historical epic, MONGOL. Based on leading scholarly accounts and written by Bodrov and Arif Aliyev, MONGOL delves into the dramatic and harrowing early years of the ruler who was born as Temudgin in 1162. As it follows Temudgin from his perilous childhood to the battle that sealed his destiny, the film paints a multidimensional portrait of the future conqueror, revealing him not as the evil brute of hoary stereotype, but as an inspiring, fearless and visionary leader. MONGOL shows us the making of an extraordinary man, and the foundation on which so much of his greatness rested: his relationship with his wife, Borte, his lifelong love and most trusted advisor. Filmed in the very lands that gave birth to Genghis Khan, MONGOL transports us back to a distant and exotic period in world history; to a nomad's landscape of endless space, climatic extremes and ever-present danger. In a performance of powerful stillness and subtlety, celebrated young Japanese actor Asano Tadanobu (ZATOICHI, LAST LIFE IN THE UNIVERSE) captures the inner fire that enabled a hunted boy to become a legendary conqueror. Asano's achievement is matched by those of his co-stars, including the radiant newcomer Khulan Chuluun as Temudgin's ...

Ron Clements and John Musker discuss the return to 2D Animation in The Princess and the Frog

BlackTree TVs Jamaal Finkley, sits down with the Directors of this historic animation film, and talked about the mysterious road of an animator as well as the return to 2D animation in this new Disney classic. JOHN MUSKER (Director) continues to be a major force in the art of animation and one of Disneys greatest resources. From The Little Mermaid and Aladdin to the epic comedy Hercules, his irreverent wit, strong visual style and unconventional approach to storytelling helped to create some of the most successful films in motion-picture history. Born in Chicago, Ill., Musker first began drawing while in grammar school and knew by the age of 8 that he wanted to become an animator. Inspired by such Disney classics as Sleeping Beauty and Pinocchio, as well as Bob Thomas primer The Art of Animation, he developed a thorough understanding of the animation process. His fascination with comics, cartoons and Mad Magazine further stimulated his desire to draw. At Loyola Academy, a Jesuit high school in Wilmette, Ill., Musker became a cartoonist for the school paper. His special brand of caricature, which included outrageous sketches of teachers and school celebrities, quickly caught on. This preoccupation with caricature and cartooning continued throughout his college years at Northwestern University, where he majored in English and drew cartoons for The Daily Northwestern. Following graduation from college in 1974, Musker put together a portfolio and set out for California to ...

Morgan Spurlock on The Greatest Movie Ever Sold by the Greatest Website Ever Watched!

(BlackTree TV - Los Angeles) Jamaal Finkley sits down with Morgan Spurlock to talk about his unique documentary The Greatest Movie Ever Sold. It was two years ago when we first got the idea to make POM Wonderful Presents: The Greatest Movie Ever Sold. It began with a conversation between me and my producing partner and co- writer, Jeremy Chilnick, where we talked about the TV show Heroes and their less than subtle inclusion of the Nissan Rogue into the show's storyline. We then started talking about all the big summer movies, from Transformers to Iron Man to James Bond, and about how all those product placements were more than just advertisements for products, they were tools that made these movies' footprints and awareness even bigger ... these ―co-promotions helped turn them into blockbusters. And we wondered, if a little movie, even a documentary, had the same type of partnerships and co-promotion opportunities, could it have a bigger presence? Would it have the same influence? Could a doc reach the same level of awareness and marketability of a summer blockbuster? Would it be a ―doc-buster? Brands are everywhere these days. It seems like I can't go to any event these days without someone ―sponsoring it. Sporting events, concerts, anything. So, why not a movie? Better yet, why not a movie that examines the whole phenomenon that is actually paid for by the companies themselves. That was the jumping off point. Now product placement isn't a new phenomenon. In the 1800s ...
