The Velvet Underground - There She Goes Again

The Velvet Underground and Nico Studio album by The Velvet Underground & Nico The Velvet Underground and Nico is the debut album by experimental rock band The Velvet Underground and vocal collaborator Nico. It was originally released in March 1967 by Verve Records, a subsidiary of MGM Records. Recorded in 1966 during Andy Warhol's Exploding Plastic Inevitable multimedia event tour, The Velvet Underground and Nico would gain notoriety for its experimentalist performance sensibilities, as well as its focus on controversial subject matter in songs such as "Heroin". Though largely ignored upon its release, it has since become one of the most influential and critically lauded rock albums in history, appearing as #13 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time[1] as well as being added to the 2006 National Recording Registry by the Librarian of Congress. The Velvet Underground and Nico is sometimes referred to as the "banana album" as it features a Warhol print of a banana on the cover. Early copies of the album invited the owner to "Peel slowly and see"; peeling back the banana skin revealed a flesh-colored banana underneath. A special machine was needed to manufacture these covers (one of the causes of the album's delayed release), but MGM paid for costs figuring that any ties to Warhol would boost sales of the album.[6][3] On the 1996 CD reissue, the banana image is on the front cover while the image of the peeled banana is on the inside of the ...

Led Zeppelin - Bring It On Home

Led Zeppelin - Bring It on Home Copyright - 1969 Atlantic Records In 1969, English rock band Led Zeppelin recorded a version of the song for their album Led Zeppelin II. The intro and outro were deliberate homages to the Sonny Boy Williamson song, while the rest of the track was an original Jimmy Page/Robert Plant composition. However, Dixon was not given a song writing credit for the track, leading to Arc Music, the publishing arm of Chess Records, bringing a lawsuit against Led Zeppelin for copyright infringement and winning an out-of-court settlement in the 1970s. Dixon himself did not benefit until he sued Arc Music to recover his royalties and copyrights. Plant's harmonica part was recorded in Vancouver. The band went on tour with the master tapes from Led Zeppelin II and now and then stopped into a studio to record parts. Led Zeppelin frequently performed this song live at Led Zeppelin concerts, first appearing as an encore on the band's 1970 UK tour. When played live, the song exhibited sharp interplay between Jimmy Page's guitar, John Bonham's drums and John Paul Jones' bass. This can be seen on the Led Zeppelin DVD, which features a performance at the Royal Albert Hall in 1970. Another version dating from 1972 is included on the live release How the West Was Won which listed the song as a medley on the cover. "Bring it on Home" was credited to Dixon, while the middle section, newly named "Bring it on Back," was credited to Bonham/Jones/Page/Plant. From 1973, the ...

It was released on 23 February 2007 in Belgium and the Netherlands, on 26 February 2007 in the rest of the world and in late March in North America. The album was preceded by the release of lead single "Ruby" on 19 February (see 2007 in British music).[1][2][3] It became the band's first (and to date, only) number one album in the British album charts. Once again produced by Stephen Street, producer of the band's debut album Employment, Yours Truly, Angry Mob is lyrically darker and more socially aware than its predecessor, with tracks dealing with street crime, violence, fame, and the inaccuracy of tabloid articles. The band had earlier revealed to NME in October 2006 that they had recorded 22 songs and hoped to whittle that number down to 13 or 14 for the final album.[4] Additionally, in July 2006 the band revealed to Gigwise that they'd hoped to have the album released by Valentine's Day 2007.[5] The album was leaked in its entirety on February 21, 2007. The album was criticised by Blur frontman Damon Albarn, who likened it to his own record The Great Escape Lyrics: Or you will never know So try your best And think about it later Or you will never ...

David Bowie - Starman

David Bowie - Starman Copyright - RCA Victor "Starman" is a single by David Bowie, released in April 1972. The song was a late addition to The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, included at the insistence of RCA's Dennis Katz, who heard a demo and loved the track, believing it would make a great single.[1] It replaced the Chuck Berry cover "Round and Round" on the album.[ The lyrics describe Ziggy Stardust bringing a message of hope to Earth's youth through the radio, salvation by an alien 'Starman'. The story is told from the point of view of one of the youths who hears Ziggy. According to Bowie himself, speaking to William S. Burroughs for Rolling Stone magazine in 1973, Ziggy Stardust is not the Starman but merely his earthly messenger -- contrary to received opinion which often paints Ziggy as an extraterrestrial.[2] The song has inspired interpretations ranging from an allusion to the Second Coming of Christ,[3] to an accurate prediction of the plot for the film Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977).[4] The music is in a gentle pop rock vein, featuring prominent acoustic guitar and a string arrangement by Mick Ronson, not dissimilar to the style of Bowie's previous album Hunky Dory (1971). The chorus is loosely based on Judy Garland's song "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" from the film The Wizard of Oz. Other influences cited for the track are the T. Rex songs "Telegram Sam" and "Hot Love" (the "boogie" references and "la la la" chorus) and ...

The Stooges - Fun House

The Stooges - Fun House Copyright - 1970 Elektra Records Fun House is the second album by the American rock band The Stooges. It was recorded in May 1970 and released in July of the same year. Like its predecessor, The Stooges (1969), Fun House did not sell well. In subsequent years, however, it has been cited as very influential on later musicians, notably in punk rock. In 2007, the album was voted Loudest Album Ever by Q Magazine. The tracks were recorded live in the studio with few or no overdubs, in roughly the same order as on the record. The Stooges were known at the time more for their cataclysmic live shows than for any established musicality, so "Funhouse" being recorded in this pseudo-live fashion made it the Stooges album which most closely captures the essence of their sound[2]. It also allowed for the collector-friendly release of 1970: The Complete Fun House Sessions in 2001. The Stooges intended that "Loose" open the album, but Elektra thought "Down On The Street" would be the stronger opener.[3] An alternate version of "Down On The Street", with Doors-style organ overdubbed on it by producer Don Gallucci, was pulled from the album and made into a single.[3] It was released the same month as Fun House, and fared slightly better on the charts. In 1985, singer Henry Rollins cited Fun House as one of his favorite albums in Spin.[4] In 1999 Rhino Records released a limited edition box set, 1970: The Complete Fun House Sessions, featuring every take of every ...

The band had already released two very carefully performed studio albums, Emerson, Lake and Palmer (1970) and Tarkus (1971), the former being dominated by virtuoso keyboards and drumming; the latter being as bombastic as it was ambitious. Trilogy, their third studio album, increased ELP's worldwide popularity, and included "Hoedown", which was one of their most popular songs when performing live. The song "Endless Enigma Part One" opens with the sound of a beating heart, an effect created by the bass drum pedal of Palmer's Ludwig Octoplus kit. Notably, this effect was invented by Carl Palmer long before it was ever used on Jethro Tull's A Passion Play or Pink Floyd's The Dark Side of the Moon. David Bowie - Moonage Daydream

David Bowie - Moonage Daydream Copyright - RCA Victor "Moonage Daydream" is a song written by David Bowie in 1971 and first released as a single under the name Arnold Corns. A rerecorded version was released in 1972 on the album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. Story: The alien messiah is revealed/created, and his destiny to save the world from the disaster in "Five Years" is also hinted at, as well his fate as the quintessential "soul lover". In terms of the plot, this is one of the most important songs as it describes the creation of Ziggy from a combination of religion, romance, sexual freedom, rebellion, and passion; he metamorphoses into the archetypal rock star. Moonage Daydream: The Life and Times of Ziggy Stardust is the title of a book written by David Bowie, published in 2002 by Genesis Publications, named after this song. The book documented the years 1972-73 and was fully illustrated with the photography of Mick Rock. David and Mick met in 1972 and formed a working relationship and lasting friendship. Subsequently, Mick Rock was allowed to become the only photographer authorised to record the 2-year career of Ziggy Stardust. Lyrics: I'm an alligator, I'm a mama-papa coming for you I'm the space invader, I'll be a rock 'n' rollin' bitch for you Keep your mouth shut, you're squawking like a pink monkey bird And I'm busting up my brains for the words Keep your 'lectric eye on me babe Put your ray gun to my head Press your space face ...

The Stooges - I Wanna Be Your Dog

The Stooges - I Wanna Be Your Dog Copyright - Elektra Records "I Wanna Be Your Dog" is a 1969 song by The Stooges, featured on their self-titled debut album. Its memorable riff is composed of only three notes (G, F# and E), and is played continuously throughout the song. The 3-minute-and-9-second long song, with its raucous, distortion-heavy guitar intro, and steady, driving beat, is a shining example of the Stooges' inventive heavy metal and punk sound. The song has been covered by many artists, including Slayer, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, Sex Pistols, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Sonic Youth, Swans, Uncle Tupelo, Magic Dirt (who played it backwards), Emilie Simon, The Andalusian Dogs (German Avantgarde-Trashband) and many others. Slayer recorded a tribute parody called " I Am Gonna Be Your God" for their Undisputed Attitude album. The song is featured in Guy Ritchie's hit film Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels as well as the films Friday Night Lights it is played after half-time in the state championship game, The Crow: City of Angels (in which Iggy Pop played the role of Curve, one of the villains) and Crimson Rivers II: Angels of the Apocalypse, the skateboard video by Flip, entitled "Sorry", an episode of TV show Skins (Episode 2.9) and in an episode of the TV sitcom How I Met Your Mother (Episode 2.16: Stuff). Led Zeppelin - Black Mountain Side

Led Zeppelin - Black Mountain Side Copyright - 1969 Atlantic Records Black Mountain Side is an instrumental song by English rock band Led Zeppelin, featured on their 1969 debut album Led Zeppelin. It is inspired by the music of an old traditional English folk song, recorded by Bert Jansch as "Blackwaterside". The beginning of the song starts over the end of the previous track, "Your Time Is Gonna Come". An overdubbed rapid guitar lick can be heard on the album version. Page did this to simulate the sound of a sitar. Page played a borrowed Gibson J200 acoustic guitar for this recording. To enhance the Indian character of the song, drummer and sitarist Viram Jasani played tabla on the track. When the song was played at Led Zeppelin concerts, it was usually featured as part of Jimmy Page's instrumental "White Summer", with the combined arrangement "White Summer-Black Mountainside" typically running at 11 minutes. Like "Black Mountain Side," "White Summer" is inspired by an old Irish folk song, "She Moves Through the Fair". Page would sit on a stool for the duration of the two songs and usually played them on a Danelectro guitar, tuned differently than his favored Gibson Les Paul. These songs were used by the band to showcase Page's skills as a guitarist, as he plays almost entirely by himself, with drummer John Bonham adding some fills later in the song. This song was a component of Led Zeppelin's live set list until their fifth US Tour in 1970. Years later it was restored ...

David Bowie - Five Years Copyright - RCA Victor "Five Years" is a song written by David Bowie and released in 1972. It was the opening track on the album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. The song tells of an Earth doomed to destruction in five years and the aftermath of this knowledge. Bowie is rumored to have chosen the length of time, five years, as a result of a dream in which his deceased father told him he must never fly again and would die in five years. Lyrics: Pushing thru the market square, so many mothers sighing News had just come over, we had five years left to cry in News guy wept and told us, earth was really dying Cried so much his face was wet, then I knew he was not lying I heard telephones, opera house, favourite melodies I saw boys, toys electric irons and tvs My brain hurt like a warehouse, it had no room to spare I had to cram so many things to store everything in there And all the fat-skinny people, and all the tall-short people And all the nobody people, and all the somebody people I never thought Id need so many people A girl my age went off her head, hit some tiny children If the black hadnt a-pulled her off, I think she would have killed them A soldier with a broken arm, fixed his stare to the wheels of a cadillac A cop knelt and kissed the feet of a priest, and a queer threw up at the sight of that I think I saw you in an ice-cream parlour, drinking milk shakes cold and long Smiling and waving and looking so fine ...

Surrealistic Pillow was the first blockbuster psychedelic album by a band from San Francisco, announcing to the world the active bohemian scene that had developed there starting with The Beats during the 1950s, extending and changing through the 1960s into the Haight-Ashbury counterculture. Subsequently, the exposure generated by the Airplane and others wrought great changes to that counterculture, and by 1968 the ensuing national media attention had precipitated a very different San Francisco scene than had existed in 1966. San Francisco photographer, Herb Greene photographed the band for the album's cover art. Some controversy exists as to the role of Grateful Dead guitarist Jerry Garcia in the making of the album. His reputed presence on several tracks is not corroborated by RCA paperwork and is denied by producer Rick Jarrard. The Stooges - LA Blues

The Stooges - LA Blues Copyright - 1970 Elektra Records Fun House is the second album by the American rock band The Stooges. In 1985, singer Henry Rollins cited Fun House as one of his favorite albums in Spin.[4] In 1999 Rhino Records released a limited edition box set, 1970: The Complete Fun House Sessions, featuring every take of every song ...

The Stooges - Ann

The Stooges - Ann Copyright - Elektra Records The Stooges is the self-titled debut of the rock band The Stooges. It was released in August 1969 and peaked at number 106 on the Billboard album charts. Two songs, "I Wanna Be Your Dog" and "1969", were released as singles. For their first album, The Stooges had intended to record five songs: "I Wanna Be Your Dog", "No Fun", "1969", "Ann", and "We Will Fall". The five songs were staples of—and essentially the basis of—The Stooges' live set at the time. A typical Stooges song of the period would involve two minutes of composed song followed by several minutes of improvisation. Presuming that the five songs as normally performed would cover requirements for the album, the Stooges were told by Elektra that they needed more material. According to Iggy Pop, "We handed (the five-song version of the album) in and they refused it. They said, 'There aren't enough songs!' So we lied and said, 'That's OK, we've got lots more songs.'" (liner notes of 2005 reissue, p.9) In reality, the Stooges were about a day ahead of themselves when Iggy made that statement to Elektra; overnight, the group wrote three more songs, "Real Cool Time", "Not Right", and "Little Doll", and played them for the first time in the studio. An initial mix by producer John Cale that resembled fellow ex-Velvet Underground member Lou Reed's "closet mix" of their third album (ironically, Cale had quit the Velvets before that album was recorded) was rejected by Elektra ...

The Velvet Underground - Heroin

Though largely ignored upon its release, it has since become one of the most influential and critically lauded rock albums in history, appearing as #13 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time as well as being added to the 2006 National Recording Registry by the Librarian of Congress. On the 1996 CD reissue, the banana image is on the front cover while the image of the peeled banana is on the inside of the jewel case, beneath the CD itself. Much of the album's sound was conceived by John Cale, who stressed the experimental qualities of the band. Cale, who was influenced greatly by his work with La Monte Young, John Cage and the early Fluxus movement, encouraged the use of alternative ways of producing sound in music. Cale thought his sensibilities meshed well with Lou Reed's, who was already experimenting with alternative tunings. For instance, Reed had "invented" the ostrich guitar tuning for a song he wrote called "The Ostrich" for the short-lived band The Primitives. Ostrich guitar tuning consists of all strings being tuned to the same note. The method was utilized on songs "Venus in Furs" and "All Tomorrow's Parties". Often, the guitars were also tuned down a whole step, which produced a lower, fuller sound that Cale called "sexy". Track History: "Heroin" is a song by The Velvet Underground, released on their 1967 debut album, The Velvet Underground and Nico. Once again produced by Stephen Street, producer of the band's debut album Employment, Yours Truly, Angry Mob is lyrically darker and more socially aware than its predecessor, with tracks dealing with street crime, violence, fame, and the inaccuracy of tabloid articles. The Velvet Underground - Femme Fatale
