Atlanta Country Music Hall of Honor members Elaine and Shorty Eager - The Grass Kats, were a regular presence on the Georgia bluegrass music scene for about 25 years beginning with their move to Decatur, Ga., from Pennsylvania in 1980. Among their Grass Kats in the early 1980s was fiddler Randall Franks, "Officer Randy Goode," from TV's "In the Heat of the Night," who is seen in this 1985 performance with Michael Newberry on bass. Other Grass Kats through the years were Bruce Sims, guitar; Butch Stover, bassist; Ramon Pickens, bassist; Jean Durham, bassist; and Dallas Burrell, fiddle. Franks also appeared during this era with his group The Peachtree Pickers, Doodle and the Golden River Grass, the Marksmen Quartet and Bill Monroe and his Blue Grass Boys. The husband and wife duo playing banjo and guitar, respectively, immediately made strides upon arrival in Georgia landing performing spots at most of the area bluegrass festivals such as Sugar Creek, Hamby Mountain, Marietta, Raccoon Creek, Armuchee, Uncle Pens, Diamond Lure, and Weiss Lake, Al. among others by the 1981 season. They also kept regular engagements at area eateries such a Caseys in East Cobb County where they could be found Friday nights from 1983-1986 and on occasion other establishments such as Julians on Covington Highway, Holiday Inn on Delk Road in Marietta, and the Crazy Horse Saloon. They appeared live on local radio on WRFG and WREK, and local television stations. Many of Shorty's early experiences ...
