A Bluegrass Music Classic - On The Porch

To get the entire movie go to www.createspace.com It was back in 1964. New York City filmmaker, David Hoffman, age 22, was headed down with his new 16mm hand held camera (weight 49 lbs!) to spend three weeks driving the backcountry around Madison County, North Carolina, in the center of Appalachia, with the 82 year old founder of the pioneer Asheville Mountain Music and Dance Festival, Bascom Lamar Lunsford. The resulting film, "Bluegrass Roots" lets you hear and experience the hard scrabbling, dirt road real people sounds that dominated the back country of the southern mountains 40 years ago. It presents a string of the most extraordinary singers, players and dancers the BlueGrass Mountains had to offer. Many later became famous. Some were never heard from again. Most of the songs are classics, including Lunsford's own tune, "Mountain Dew." When this film aired on Public Television in 1965, TV Guide gave it a full-page positive review, because Americans had never seen a documentary on the roots of Bluegrass and Country music. Today, the dirt roads and the moonshine counties are largely modernized, and Bluegrass Roots, stands as a record of a uniquely talented group of people at a time just before the coming of television, changed them. www.thehoffmancollection.com

Bluegrass Music - Randall Franks, Otis Head, Raymond Fairchild - Sound of a Train - Cripple Creek

Pull up a chair, its time for The Otis Head Show. Ninety-year-old Otis Head plays harmonica, buck dances and receives an award for his work as a radio host. For 51 years, thousands of North Georgians have sought a weekly dose of down-home charm and bluegrass music from this beloved radio personality. Saturdays from 12:30 to 1:30 pm at 1530 on the AM dial, WTTI, Otis packs in loyal listeners who look forward to his folksy delivery and personal stories about growing up in Gobblers Knob and living in Plainview, both north of Dalton in Whitfield County. I was born up the creek from Praters Mill, he said. We were always farmers at that time. When Head began broadcasting his weekly bluegrass program on WBLJ in Dalton it was 1959. He gave listeners the latest sounds of bluegrass at a time when performers such as Elvis Presley were changing the face of Southern music, pushing bluegrass further down on the list of radio formats. When I was real young all I knew was a few people who picked banjo and maybe a few that played fiddle, he said. I liked it. Its in my bones I reckon. He was playing the stars Bill Monroe, the Stanley Brothers, and Jim and Jesse. I had live bands at one time, he said. The Swaggerty Family and the Fort Mountain Boys were among them. Head originally began the program to promote his grocery store, the Plainview Superette. I started from nothing — just the little stock, he said. I had $444 worth. The store was originally just 17 feet by 22 feet. Business got so ...

Appalachian entertainer Randall Franks brought attendees to their feet with his performance of "The Old Black Fiddle" at the 31st Annual Georgia Music Hall of Fame Awards Show on Sept. 19, 2009 as he honored inductee John L "Johnny" Carson (1933-2010), This performance is shared in honor of Carson, who passed away July 28, 2010. The 2009 ASE Song of the Year was written by Franks and is a prequel to Charlie Daniels's "The Devil Went Down to Georgia." It tells the story of the fiddle that Johnny played in his contest with the Devil. Airing live on Georgia Public Broadcasting statewide, The Friends of Georgia Music Festival, Inc. hosted the event at the Georgia World Congress Center. Franks, an award-winning fiddler and singer, said he was honored to represent the Appalachian and Bluegrass music styles on the show. "This program was such a wonderful combination of musical genres sharing the rich musical fabric that puts Georgia in everyone's mind," Franks said. "All of the artists were so supportive of what we were doing, when the audience came to their feet including so many of the inductees, it reinforced for me how God places you in opportunities to share the talents He gave you for His glory." Among the audience was other feature performers including Collective Soul, Third Day, Bryan-Michael Cox, Chuck Leavell, Monica Pearson with Cheryl Rogers and 2007 Scholarship Winner Reginald Smith. Award winning American fiddler Randall Franks,"Officer Randy Goode" from TV's "In the Heat of the Night," makes a special appearance with King of the Smoky Mountain Banjo Raymond Fairchild and his Maggie Valley Boys in a concert at the Wink Theater in Dalton, Ga. on April 24, 2004. Franks performs a tune that he initially learned as a boy from Skillet Licker Gordon Tanner, who recorded the initial hit with his father's Skillet Lickers in 1934. Franks later performed it with International Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame member Chubby Wise, Country Music Hall of Fame member Bill Monroe and others. This performance honored the career of north Georgia radio personality Otis Head. Cody Shuler of Pine Mountain Railroad and Bruce Moody was performing with Raymond's band. Fairchild holds two gold albums and is an inductee in the SPBGMA Hall of Greats and a five-time recipient of the Bluegrass Banjo of the Year Award. The Maggie Valley Opry House hosts his performances from May through October when he is not making a special appearance. Many are not aware that Raymond has musical roots in Northwest Georgia. Randall and Raymond are long time friends who met touring the American bluegrass festival circuit. (Down Yonder - Arranger: Randall Franks/Peach Picked Pub./BMI)

Grab the headphones and enjoy a close-up view of the Friday night jam. Fewer players made for an inside view of the group. Judie Lewis returned to lay down a nice bass foundation, and Susan Pounds made the journey back from Melbourne to add some new and inspirational songs. Jerry Jernigan, teamed up with Jack Lewis (banjo) to vocalize about an old mule, and Mrs. Imogene Christian felt the call to come up and harmonize with Gerald Creed and Susan Pounds. Overall, it was a relaxed and fun evening punctuated by Johnny Adams on his hand-crafted mandolin and a new harmonica. Bill, next time it's your turn to take the spot light with your banjo.

Angels rock me to sleep - Bluegrass Cardinals

"Angels rock me to sleep" is a song by Bill Monroe, performed here by The Bluegrass Cardinals. With their gorgeous harmonies and virtuoso playing, the Bluegrass Cardinals were one of the best-loved and most influential bands in bluegrass. Founded in the mid-seventies. The Cardinals' contemporary take on traditional bluegrass music sounds as vibrant and fresh today as it did when they burst on the scene, making fans of legends such as Lester Flatt. The Cardinals are well known for the perfect balance they achieve between solid tasteful picking (featuring Don Parmley on the banjo) and beautiful vocal harmonies, featuring the powerful voice of David Parmley With their gorgeous harmonies and virtuoso playing, the Bluegrass Cardinals were one of the best-loved and most influential bands in bluegrass. Lyrics My heart is sad my soul is weary While sailing o'er life's rugged plain The clouds are dark the day is dreary It seems all earthly hope's in vain Angels rock me to sleep in the cradle of love Bear me over the deep to heaven above When the shadows shall fall and the savior shall call Angels rock me to sleep in the cradle of love There is no earthly friend to guide me No one to call to heaven's goal But Christ the savior stands beside me To cheer and comfort my poor soul At last the harbor I am nearing I see the lights along the shore I hear my friends and loved ones cheering I'll soon be safe for ever more
