The controversial security devices use X-rays or millimeter wave technology to reveal what a passenger may be hiding underneath clothes. According to the Transportation Security Administration, or TSA, the full-body scanners "can detect both metallic and non-metallic items that may pose a threat to aviation security." The pictures are usually black and white or appear to look like a film negative. The TSA website says that 385 so-called "advanced imaging technology" machines are currently in use at nearly 70 airports nationwide. Reports say there are plans to add an additional 1000 such machines by the end of next year. Controversy surrounding such full body scanner images is on the rise, with a growing number of passengers, and according to CNN, pilots, "revolting." CNN reports that some "grassroots groups" are "urging travelers to either not fly or to protest by opting out of the full-body scanners." Any passenger that opts out of the full-body scan will undergo "enhanced" pat downs instead. In October of 2010, a pilot, Michael Roberts, "refused to submit" to a full-body scan and an enhanced pat down. According to CNN, Roberts is considering a lawsuit "challenging the constitutionality" of such procedures. The Transportation Security Administration claimed last summer, for instance, that "scanned images cannot be stored or recorded." Now it turns out that some police agencies are storing the controversial images after all. The US Marshals Service admitted this week that it had surreptitiously saved tens of thousands of images recorded with a millimeter wave system at the security checkpoint of a single Florida courthouse. This follows an earlier disclosure (PDF) by the TSA that it requires all airport body scanners it purchases to be able to store and transmit images for "testing, training, and evaluation purposes." The agency says, however, that those capabilities are not normally activated when the devices are installed at airports. Body scanners penetrate clothing to provide a highly detailed image so accurate that critics have likened it to a virtual strip search. Technologies vary, with millimeter wave systems capturing fuzzier images, and backscatter X-ray machines able to show precise anatomical detail. The US government likes the idea because body scanners can detect concealed weapons better than traditional magnetometers.

The 3D shape of the human body is useful for applications in fitness, games and apparel. Accurate body scanners, however, are expensive, limiting the availability of 3D body models. We present a method for human shape reconstruction from noisy monocular image and range data using a single inexpensive commodity sensor (the Kinect). The approach combines low-resolution image silhouettes with coarse range data to estimate a parametric model of the body. Accurate 3D shape estimates are obtained by combining multiple monocular views of a person moving in front of the sensor. To cope with varying body pose, we use a SCAPE body model which factors 3D body shape and pose variations. This enables the estimation of a single consistent shape while allowing pose to vary. We propose a simple method to estimate standard body measurements from the recovered SCAPE model and show that the accuracy of our method is competitive with commercial body scanning systems costing orders of magnitude more.
