Die Antwoord's US debut at Coachella: interview with Xeni (Boing Boing Video)

Ninja and Yo-Landi of Die Antwoord sat down with Xeni Jardin of BoingBoing.net for an interview just after the South African "rap-rave" band's first-ever US performance at the Coachella music festival. The duo spoke about their explosive, internet-fueled burst to fame, and about the origins of their "car crash music" (it's disturbing, but you can't look away) by way of District 9 and an anarchic internet and music subculture in post-Apartheid South Africa. We're told this was the only interview Die Antwoord granted during their US visit. Throbbing Gristle Interview: Boing Boing Video (2009 Reunion Tour)

Before we shot this Boing Boing Video interview with legendary industrial music band Throbbing Gristle, Richard Metzger and I spoke to the band's sound technician backstage, and asked what we should expect in the way of sub-bass frequencies -- rumored to be so powerful during performances that cameras can't hold a steady shot, and bowels sometimes can't hold their contents. Charlie Poulet, TG's sound tech, cracked up and flashed an evil grin. "Oh, we got some frequencies," he laughed, "Yeah, we definitely got some frequencies ready for you people tonight." Those "frequencies" are part of what make TG's music so transcendental and disturbing, and in the BB interview with Chris Carter, Cosey Fanni Tutti, Peter "Sleazy" Christopherson, and Genesis Breyer P-Orridge, we explore their technical and creative underpinnings. We hear TG members talk about the sort of mind-meld trance they all fall in to while performing, and we learn about the early days of recording work like "Hamburger Lady" to cassette tapes, then walking down to have a hamburger together at a corner sandwich shop down the street from their old studio in what was then a really shitty part of London. Gen talks about her first time with Twitter, and we hear what it's like for the band once called "wreckers of civilization" to be celebrated, more than 30 years later, as living legends. - Xeni Jardin Complete blog post on Boing Boing: www.boingboing.net More on Throbbing Gristle's website: throbbing-gristle.com

The Decemberists Interview: Boing Boing Video / Scott Compton

In case you're not hip to The Decemberists, they're a fantastic indie/folk/rock outfit from Portland, Oregon who took 15 years to become an overnight success. Their influences are diverse, from 1960s British folksters like Shirley Collins and Anne Briggs to 1980s modern rock songwriters like XTC, REM, and Morrissey. In January, the band released its sixth album, an epic alt.country/bluesy work titled The King Is Dead and took to the road. When their wagon train came through Oakland's Fox Theater in February, Boing Boing pal and hypertalented video director Scott Compton made the scene. BB readers may remember Scott for directing the Swell Season interview/performance film in 2009 that quickly became a Boing Boing Video fave. The Decemberists' timing was impeccable as it was Valentine's Day and Scott, well, loves The Decemberists. Scott rallied his crack video team -- the inimitable Bart Nagel and Chris Valente on Canon 5D cameras and Lauretta Molitor on sound -- for 20 minutes with the band and stageside access for a couple tunes. Then he took the footage back to his Remedy Editorial facility where editor Jeffrey Boyette and colorist Ayumi Ashley worked their post-production magic. The video team's passion and the band's talent gelled into the lovely piece you see above. "In person, The Decemberists were humble, smart, and collaborative," Scott says. "For me, it was really interesting to hear singer/songwriter Colin Meloy talk about how Neil Young's seminal 'Comes A Time ...

Micachu and "maker" music (Boing Boing Video)

Boing Boing Video: www.boingboing.net In this episode, our UK-based music correspondent introduces us to minimalist/electro/glitch trio Micachu and the Shapes. 21-year-old songwriter/musician/MC Mica "Micachu" Levi leads the band, with Raisa Khan on keyboards and Marc Pell on drums. They're destined to win a Grammy for best use of a vacuum cleaner in a melodic noise composition. Well, whatever, maybe not, but I love that they use a "hoover" as a voice modulation accessory on-stage, and they build or mod other instruments from odd origins. In our Boing Boing video interview, they joke about the vacuum cleaner thing being a gimmick, but it's cheap and punk and I like it. Micachu's debut record is due out in a couple weeks (early February, 2009), and was produced by the acclaimed electronic musician Matthew Herbert. As is the case with many of the bands Russell introduces us to in these Boing Boing interviews, his timing is prescient. Music critics in the UK are using headlines like "Is Micachu The Next Big Thing?" which probably means: yes. But we wouldn't hear about them in the US otherwise for months. My Morning Jacket by Scott Compton (Boing Boing Video)

On June 24, My Morning Jacket descended on Oakland's historic Fox Theater for an epic performance in support of their majestic album, Circuital. Remedy Editorial's Scott Compton and his merry band of video documentarians made the scene on behalf of Boing Boing. You'll remember Scott and crew as the artistes who brought The Swell Season and The Decemberists to the big little screen for Boing Boing Video. We are now honored to feature their loving cut of My Morning Jacket, interviewed and live in concert on June 24, 2011. Here's Scott: About our time with the band: We spent about 45 minutes interviewing the band. This is one of those happy stories where you meet your heroes and they are even cooler than you had hoped. They were unscripted, present, and exhibited a great esprit de corps both in the interview and onstage. I got the sense that they were appreciative of their fans. I'm an even bigger fan now and I hope the BB audience enjoys the extended 21 minute experience. Thanks to MMJ road manager Eric Mayers for his collaborative spirit and of course the beautiful Fox Oakland theatre and Tony Leong of Another Planet Entertainment. About the production: MMJ like shows are legendary. Lighting Designer Marc Janowitz immerses the audience with an ultra-sophisticated blend of colors and shapes. The audience response to the sight/sound is emotional and visceral. I wanted to give the MMJ fan a sense of what it was like to be in the audience at the Fox in Oakland. Every concert ...

Mardi Gras 1956: Through My Father's Lens (Boing Boing Video)

Boing Boing Video presents a special episode featuring rare and historic film from Mardi Gras in New Orleans, Louisiana, from 1956. Artist Mar Dore stumbled on a box of slides in her family's home in Texas and inside, discovered photographs that her father took of the parades in the era of "Mad Men." That box, like a time capsule she says, opened a door into history. "The photos in this documentary were taken by my Father, John Woodward Mizenko. The photos were taken on February 12th and on Mardi Gras Day, February 14th, 1956, on the Mid-City route and on Canal Street in front of Miller-Wohls Department Store, which is no longer there. My father was born in the small town of Covington, Louisiana in 1921. He was a chemical engineer, inventor and builder. He worked for major oil companies and we had to move around a lot. The film was shot close to where my father was taking photos. I keep looking for his face in the crowds. He discovered that he had lymphoma cancer in 1990. His work had exposed him to toxic chemicals for decades, chemicals that caused cancer. It claimed his life in 1991. These photographs celebrate his memory, and even though Ive not yet found his face in those crowds, the photographs themselves illustrate the joy he took in capturing the spirit of Mardi Gras and its wonderful celebration of life." Ninja Assassin Effects Tech: John Gaeta Interview (Boing Boing Video)

This episode of Boing Boing Video is brought to you by www.wepc.com Academy Award-winning special effects designer John Gaeta (Matrix, Speed Racer) talks with Boing Boing about the technology and the human talent behind the forthcoming movie Ninja Assassin, directed by James McTeigue. Along the way, we explore a broader realm of questions about the future of games, movies, and interactive entertainment. Will movies become more like games, offering new ways for us to insert ourselves inside the stories? Who will create them, using what tools, and how will the experience be different? Will computer-generated actors replace human actors, or stunt persons -- or will the two realms overlap in ways we can't yet predict? All of this we ask of the guy who invented "bullet time." Due in theaters this fall, director James McTeigue's Ninja Assassin follows the story of Raizo (played by Asian mega-popstar Rain), one of the world's most deadly assassins. As Gaeta explains in this video, the movie merges blindingly badass Bruce-Lee-esque martial arts stunt work with tastefully integrated "virtual" work. BB blog post, with extended interview transcript of a longer conversation we had about the future of interactivity and "hybrid entertainment" -- and why Hollywood is, in Gaeta's words, "like a mule." www.boingboing.net

Boing Boing Video archives: www.boingboing.net On Wednesday, March 11, 2009 the United Nations' Commission of Narcotic Drugs held its 52nd session in Vienna, Austria, just10 years after Kofi Annan's pledge to have a "drug free world" by 2008. Representatives from around the world attended the conference voicing support and opposition to the centuries old "war on drugs." Working with Witness and the Hungarian Civil Liberties Union, we cut together excerpts from "Dare to Question? Using Video to Take on UN Drug Policies" and other testimonials appealing to the United Nations to reconsider its hardline policies combating the cultivation and use of illicit drugs.
