"Bolero" by Maurice Ravel

Ravel's "Bolero" played to scenes of ancient Egypt. A construction management study carried out by the firm Daniel, Mann, Johnson, & Mendenhall in association with Mark Lehner and other Egyptologists, estimates that the total project required an average workforce of 14567 people and a peak workforce of 40000. Without the use of pulleys, wheels, or iron tools, they surmise the Great Pyramid was completed from start to finish in approximately 10 years. Their critical path analysis study reveals estimates that the number of blocks used in construction was between 2-2.8 million (an average of 2.4 million), but settles on a reduced finished total of 2 million after subtracting the estimated area of the hollow spaces of the chambers and galleries. Most sources agree on this number of blocks somewhere above 2.3 million. The Egyptologists' calculations suggest the workforce could have sustained a rate of 180 blocks per hour (3 blocks/minute) with ten hour work days for putting each individual block in place. They derived these estimates from construction projects that did not use modern machinery. This study fails to take into account however, especially when compared to modern third world construction projects, the logistics and craftsmanship time inherent in constructing a building of nearly unparalleled magnitude with such precision, or among other things, the use of up to 60-80 ton stones being quarried and transported a distance of over 500 miles. Gerard Joling - No More Bolero

80's overlooked hit. Lyrics: What can I say there's an empty where your love filled my life and I know. That a part of you will always be a part of me. One summernight and the sky is full of wishes that won't arrive. How can I be in a world without your eyes to look at me. No more Boleroes No more nights to dance the dance of love Only lonely hearts no more Boleroes I hear the song and your arms always make me feel so warm now you're gone I'll be dancing on alone. No more Boleroes No more nights to dance the dance of love. Only lonely hearts no more Boleroes. (2 x)

BECK'S BOLERO (1967) by the Jeff Beck Group - with backwards guitar ending

This instrumental track was recorded in 1966 by Jeff Beck (lead guitars), Jimmy Page (12 string rhythm), John Paul Jones (bass), Keith Moon (drums) and Nicky Hopkins (piano). I had the extended version of this with backwards guitar at the end as the flip side of Beck's single, Hi Ho Silver Lining (1967). However it is best known as a track on Beck's album Truth (1968), minus this end bit. Here is the complete track. The following is paraphrased from Douglas J Noble's article written based on his interview with Beck: So how did Jimmy Page come to write 'Beck's Bolero'? 'Well, with some difficulty and largely without me! ..... I went over to Jim's house and he had this 12-string Fender and he loved the idea of using a bolero-type rhythm for a rock record. He was playing the bolero rhythm and I played the melody on top of it, but then I said, "Jim, you've got to break away from the bolero beat - you can't go on like that for ever!". So we stopped it dead in the middle of the song - like the Yardbirds would do on 'For Your Love' - then we stuck that riff into the middle......I was using a Les Paul for the lead guitar and for the backwards slide guitar through a Vox AC30 - it was the only amp I had and it was covered with beer! Actually, I think it was the beer that gave it it's sound! You can hear Moon screaming in the middle of the record over the drum break. If you listen after the drum break you can only hear the cymbal afterwards 'cause he knocked the mic over! Wonderful <b>...</b>

Bruno Bozzetto "Allegro Non Troppo" - Bolero di Ravel

"Allegro Non Troppo" is a 1976 Italian animated film directed by Bruno Bozzetto. Featuring six pieces of classical music, the movie is a sort of irreverent tribute to classic "Fantasia"; though, with its pessimistic (realistic?) view of human nature and Western progress, it can also be intended as a direct challenge to Disney's typical optimism. About the title: In music, an instruction of "allegro ma non troppo" means to play "fast, but not overly so". In the context of this film, and without the "ma", it means "not so fast!", an interjection meaning "slow down" or "think before you act". Apart from musical terminology, the litteral translation of "Allegro non troppo" is "Cheerful, not too much": a perfect title for Bozzetto's evergreen masterpiece of animation. Enjoy!
