Geldof was born Robert Frederick Zenon Geldof in Dún Laoghaire, County Dublin, in the Republic of Ireland, to parents of Catholic extraction. He attended Blackrock College, near Dublin, a school whose staunch Catholic nationalist ethos he disliked. After work as a slaughterman, road navvy and pea canner, he started as a music journalist in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, for the weekly publication Georgia Straight. Upon returning to Ireland in 1975, he became the lead singer of the band The Boomtown Rats, a rock group closely linked with the punk movement.In 1978, The Boomtown Rats had their first No. 1 single in the UK with "Rat Trap", which was the first New Wave chart-topper in that country. In 1979, the group shot to international fame with their second UK No. 1, "I Don't Like Mondays".[2] This was equally successful, as well as controversial; Geldof wrote it in the aftermath of Brenda Ann Spencer's attempted massacre at an elementary school across the street from her house in San Diego, California, at the beginning of 1979.

The Boomtown Rats were an Irish rock band that scored a series of UK hits between 1977 and 1980 and were led by vocalist Bob Geldof, who organized the Ethiopian relief efforts, Band Aid and Live Aid. All six members were originally from Dún Laoghaire, Ireland. The name "Boomtown Rats" comes from a gang in Woody Guthrie's autobiography, Bound for Glory. "I Never Loved Eva Braun" is from The Boomtown Rats 1978 album, A Tonic For The Troops. It's a very funny song, although of course the subject matter is controversial and very unfunny. I thought the song would work well behind clips from Charlie Chaplin's great 1940 film, The Great Dictator. There are many classic scenes in this movie, but the globe scene is one of the best, so i incorporated this scene into the video. The militaristic nature of the song worked perfectly with the clip of the marching drummers. The rendering of this video was for some reason a serious challenge. The clips were mostly from very old original sources so they were not the smoothest to work with. Video edits not matching slide-timing exactly has been a source of frequent frustration when incorporating video into slideshows. [Lyrics] Are you really going out with Adolf?
