Born Free Foundation - Lions - Keep Wild, Keep Free

A video I made in honor of the Born Free Foundation and the work they do. www.bornfree.org.uk www.youtube.com PLEASE READ!! Following the amazing response of Born Free Foundation supporters to our appeal about four magnificent, male lions in need in Ethiopia, a team from Born Free, alongside colleagues from the Ethiopian Wildlife Conservation Authority (EWCA), successfully relocated the lions to Ensessakotteh, Ethiopia's first wildlife rescue, conservation and education centre. Virginia McKenna OBE, Founder Trustee of the Born Free Foundation, travelled to Ethiopia and, speaking following a meeting with His Excellency, President Girma Wolde Giorgis in Addis Ababa, said, "It is wonderful to see these majestic lions relocated to Ensessakotteh where they will be able to live out their lives in spacious natural ranges. Our sincere thanks must go to His Excellency, President Girma whose support has enabled us to be here to witness these magnificent lions take their first steps on grass." The team regrouped in Addis Ababa before making the long journey to Harar where Major and General lived near an Army Parade ground. Here, with the full support and assistance of the Ministry of National Defence, South-Eastern Command, the male lions were darted and made ready for their 16 hour journey to Ensessakotteh. Originally found abandoned as cubs in the wild by a group of soldiers, Major and General had been kept at the army base for 13 years. If you would like to contribute to ...

Born Free Foundation and Africa Expedition Support partnership

Born Free Foundation (K) Lion Fence Project was established to help protect lion populations from human-animal conflict. Animal-human conflict has resulted in many lions and other predators deaths. Lion populations in Kenya have depleted considerably over the past 30 years. Unless projects like these address the issue lion's risk becoming extinct. Africa Expedition Support partnered with the Born Free Foundation (K) to build fences in the Amboseli area. over 60 young people participated in the project.

Christian the lion - Full ending

In 1969 a young Australian, John Rendall and his friend Ace Bourke, bought a small lion cub from Harrods pet department, which was then legal. 'Christian' was kept in the basement of a furniture shop on the Kings Road in Chelsea, the heart of the swinging sixties. Loved by all, the affectionate cub ate in a local restaurant, played in a nearby graveyard, but was growing fast... A chance encounter with Bill Travers and Virginia McKenna led to a new life for Christian. He came to live in a huge enclosure and to sleep in a caravan at their Surrey home. Then in 1971 he was flown to Kenya, his ancestral home, and returned to the wild by lion-man George Adamson. Nine months later in 1972, John and Ace returned to Kora in Kenya. This clip is of their reunion at that time. It was an emotional reunion: "He ran towards us, threw himself onto us, knocked us over and hugged us, with his paws on our shoulders." John Rendall Christian's story. Directed by Bill Travers, commentary by Virgina McKenna, founders of the Born Free Foundation. See www.bornfree.org.uk for more about this story. The Zoochotic Report

Zoo Check Charitable Trust (now the Born Free Foundation), 1993. Video observations by the late Bill Travers, taken over 3 years in over 100 zoos in Europe, North America and the Far East, the Zoochotic Report raised serious concern about the effects of captivity on wild animals. The Report helped form the philosophies for the Foundation and its animal welfare objectives. "In every zoo I visited when compiling the Zoochotic Report, I witnessed some sort of abnormal behaviour" Bill Travers, Co-Founder of Zoo Check

Tom and Misha

Two bottlenose dolphins, Tom and Misha, dramatically rescued from the brink of death in a swimming pool "swim with" facility in 2010, are now entering their final but crucial stages of rehabilitation. This video shows the two dolphins in the rehabilitation pen where the Born Free Foundation team have helped them develop their muscle, stamina and weight, re-learn to catch and eat live fish and ensure they are at optimum fitness in advance of their release back to the wild . The dolphins are on schedule for release into the Aegean - and back to the wild - in late Spring. For the full story visit www.bornfree.org.uk/campaigns/marine/hisaronu-dolphins/

Dolo the lion rescue

In March 2011, George Logan, multi-award winning photographer and Born Free friend, joined the Born Free Foundation team in Ethiopia for a very important and special journey -- bringing Dolo the lion to Ensessakotteh where he would have the space and privacy he deserves as well as grass under his paws for the first time. George's documentation of Dolo's momentous translocation has now been developed into this short video, kindly produced by Duncan Smith. George Logan is a long-term supporter of Born Free Foundation and the proceeds from his impressive book, "Translocation", which seamlessly and cleverly brings together the wild animals of Africa with the wild landscapes of Scotland, are generously being donated to Ensessakotteh. You can purchase George's book here - www.bornfree.org.uk For more information on Dolo and Ensessakotteh, please visit www.bornfree.org.uk

New initiative to save decreasing lions

www.ntv.co.ke Human-wildlife conflict in Amboseli has been on the increase contributing to the decreasing numbers of lions in the park. The Born Free Foundation in collaboration with the Kenya Wildlife Services embarked on a project that will protect livestock from lion attacks. This is expected to prevent retaliatory attacks by pastoralists after the lions kill their livestock. The initiative works on a very fundamental idea the building of a fence. NTVs Gladys Mutiso has more.

He made his new territory along the Tana river, but when the Wakamba herdsmen kept bringing their livestock to his hunting ground, he moved on. George Adamson said in his autobiography, "I used to count the days on which we hadn't seen Christian, but when they reached 97, I gave up recording them in my diary." Because a lion can live from 12 to 15 years in the wild, Adamson believed that Christian ended his days in the Meru National Reserve only a few miles up river.
