This clip is from the program The Vanishing Cape Breton Fiddler and is not available anywhere to my knowledge so I post it here for educational purposes since I don't own the copyright. It was directed by its host Ron MacInnis. Widely lauded for prompting a revival of fiddling in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia this clip features composer Dan R. MacDonald and a very young Rankin family circa 1971. Dan R. was John Allan Cameron's uncle and influenced the youg Rankins when he lived next to them on Back St. in Mabou. I'm finishing a book on Dan R.'s life and have collected a fair bit of info on him and his family. The last scene in the broadcast version of this film has Dan R. and a young John Morris Rankin walking down the road hand in hand. Touching scene.

North Sydney And Sydney Mines Cape Breton Nova Scotia (Music By Dave Matthews Band You And Me) North Sydney (2001 pop.: 6775) is a community in Nova Scotia's Cape Breton Regional Municipality. Located on the north side of Sydney Harbour, along the eastern coast of Cape Breton Island, North Sydney is an important port in Atlantic Canada as it is the western terminus of the Marine Atlantic ferry service. It acts as the marine link for the Trans-Canada Highway to the island of Newfoundland, which is why North Sydney's nickname is called The Gateway To Newfoundland. Marine Atlantic ferries currently operate from North Sydney's terminal to the ports of Port aux Basques and Argentia. The company is one of the largest employers in the area. History North Sydney emerged as a major shipbuilding centre in the early 1800s building many brigs and brigantines for the English market and later moving on to larger Barques and, in 1851, the full rigged ship Lord Clarendon, the largest wooden ship ever built in Cape Breton. Wooden shipbuilding declined in the 1860s but the same decade saw the arrival of increasing numbers of steamships drawn to North Sydney for bunker coal. By 1870 it was the fourth largest port in Canada dealing in ocean-going vessels, drawn for coal and due to the fact that The Western Union cable office had been established here in 1875. The railroad came to Cape Breton Island in 1891. At this time there were 2513 people in North Sydney, compared to 2417 in Sydney. In ...

Cape Breton,Nova Scotia (Music By Rita MacNeil She's Called Nova Scotia And Farwell To Nova Scotia) A Drive From Kelly's Mt To Auld Cove... Cape Breton Island (French: île du Cap-Breton - formerly île Royale, Scottish Gaelic: Eilean Cheap Breatuinn, Míkmaq: Únamakika, simply: Cape Breton) is an island on the Atlantic coast of North America. It likely corresponds to the French word "Breton", referring to Brittany. Cape Breton Island is part of the province of Nova Scotia, Canada. Although physically separated from the Nova Scotia peninsula by the Strait of Canso, it is artificially connected to mainland Nova Scotia by the Canso Causeway. The island is located east-northeast of the mainland with its northern and western coasts fronting on the Gulf of St. Lawrence; its western coast also forming the eastern limits of the Northumberland Strait. The eastern and southern coasts front the Atlantic Ocean; its eastern coast also forming the western limits of the Cabot Strait. Its landmass slopes upward from south to north, culminating in the highlands of its northern cape. A saltwater estuary, Bras d'Or Lake, dominates the centre of the island. The island is divided into four of Nova Scotia's eighteen counties: Cape Breton, Inverness, Richmond, and Victoria. Their total population as of the 2001 census numbered 147454 "Cape Bretoners"; this is approximately 16% of the provincial population. Cape Breton Island has experienced a decline in population of approximately 6.8% since the ...

I believe this is part 1 of of The Vanishing Cape Breton Fiddler which was produced, directed by Ron MacInnis and aired on the CBC in 1971. Mr. MacInnis has done a great service for lovers of Cape Breton music. Very little footage of Dan R. MacDonald exists and Mr. MacInnis is responsible for what little we have. Some great shots of Dan Hughie MacEachern (Jackie Dunn's great uncle) in this clip. We have little footage of him. This also features the only footage of Sandy MacLean of Foot Cape that I know of. I don't like posting something for which I don't own the copyright but since this isn't available for purchase and you can't copy the files to your computer I put it up for educational purposes only. Please urge the copyright holders to make it available.
