Myth-busting the National Broadband Network
As the roll out of Australia's high-speed broadband network edges closer, facts are increasingly competing with fiction as to what the final product will actually deliver. Peter Ferris is the man responsible for the design and planning of the fibre, terrestrial radio and satellites for the National Broadband Network (NBN). Ferris will shed some light on current plans that aim to connect 93 per cent of all Australian premises with broadband services with speeds up to 100 Mb/s, and all other premises in Australia with next generation wireless and satellite technologies that will deliver speeds up to 12 Mb/s. In his talk, Ferris debunks many of the persistent myths associated with the NBN project.

It's the wire used to provide ringing on phones connected to the extension sockets, modern phones don't tend to use it, also ADSL filters have capacitors so are able to supply ringing current rending the wire un-needed. Ring wire can act like an antenna and pick up unwanted interference which can weaken your connection. You'll find ring wire in the phone socket, connected to pin 3, usually orange but that assumes that whoever wired it up followed the colour code properly. Disconnect it in all sockets, In fact disconnect any wires that are NOT connected to pin 2 and 5.

Laurie Adams Gonzalez is the marketing director for Broadband Forum. She says the group has been helping service providers move to the newest Internet Protocol, known as IPv6. Mrs. Gonzalez says the current version of the Internet, known as IPv4, could soon run out of space.Broadband is one of the fastest growing areas of the telecommunications industry. A report from the Broadband Forum says the number of broadband subscribers reached four hundred ninety-eight million worldwide in June. By the third week of July it had passed five hundred million. That represents one in five homes worldwide. Mrs. Gonzalez says much of the growth has come from an unexpected source -- developing countries.
