Piano broken chords for the left hand

bit.ly Broken chords - also known as arpeggios - are very useful for building quick comps for slow, ballad-type songs. In this video tutorial I look at how to put them together and some of the problems you might run into. The beauty of broken chords comps is that, at their simplest, you don't have to worry too much about creating a complex improvisation, because you can restrict yourself to just playing the notes of the chords. You do, however, have to remember that precision is really important, especially if you're new to the piano. Broken chords quickly sound very sloppy if you make mistakes - and, because the fingering can be awkward and you can have big stretches to deal with, mistakes are quite easy to make. The basic message about broken chords on the piano is that they're very easy in principle, but can be awkward in practice! I also say a couple of things about how to use your piano's sustain pedal with broken chords - especially if you're swapping between digital and acoustic pianos, when there can be variations in the amount of sympathetic resonance you experience.

The trick is to play them in a way that once you've played a note, you let it ring out as long as possible. By playing very accurately and avoiding touching the strings that already sound, you're outlining the chords. The rhythm pattern you choose has to be constant, to not be mistaken for an attempt to solo.

Nikola Gala - Keep Walking

**No copyright infringement intended** Label: Freerange Records Format: single Genre: House ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- There are labels whose output can veer from the spectacular to the banal, and those that are a picture of consistency, and in the third space, there are those that combine both these traits. Over the years, Jimpster's Freerange is one such imprint. Now in its fifteenth year, the label's been a purveyor of classy, deep and groovy house music that's sat outside the fleeting trends and shares spase in the box of DJs from across the spectrum. Approaching its 150th release, its latest comes from Nikola Gala, a producer with a decade behind him, much of it on his own Escada label. The EP opens with the title track, a cut of deep and emotive house music that's very much an archetypal Freerange record. Building on a gently growing groove, the pads and synth rise, with an old school tweak and vocal bubbling under the brass, a blend of traditional and modern house. Broken Chords takes a deeper route, with a reversed synth underpinning the track, the subtle layers of melody and chord changes showing a deft touch. No Way Out rounds off proceedings, stripping things down around a female vocal and stabs that evoke the late 90s. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Gyorgy Cziffra plays Liszt's HARMONIES DU SOIR

Gyorgy Cziffra plays the 11th Transcendental Etude in D♭ major, HARMONIES DU SOIR by Franz Liszt. Transcendental Etude No. 11 in D-flat, "Harmonies du Soir" is the eleventh etude of the set of twelve Transcendental Etudes by Franz Liszt. This etude is a study concerning harmonies, broken chords played in quick succession, full octave jumps, chromatic harmonies, chord variations, and performance as a whole. This piece is considered one of the most artistic of the etudes, along with Chasse-neige (12th). As the piece begins, a man is sitting outside, listening to the evening melodies drifting in the air, be it bells from a church nearby or singing in some far-off choir. As he listens to opening melodies he begins to fall asleep, evident in the sprawling, lazy arpeggiated sequences in the piece. After he falls asleep he dreams and his dreams are influenced by the melodies he hears sitting out in the evening, and wanders off into a dreamland where he is surrounded by the euphony of the bells and choirs engulfing him in the night, during the passionate climax of the piece. Soon he begins to wake up and after he wakes he sits again and listens slowly to the melodies drift away. Experiments in tonal ambiguity and 'impressionistic' sonorities mark this as a forward-looking work. Unlike the other etudes, Harmonies du Soir, which is the eleventh Transcendental Etude, was rooted from the seventh Etudes in Twelve Exercises, which was a study in alternating hands. However, the ...

More cocktail piano - arpeggio runs

Check out my book: bit.ly The last cocktail piano tutorial I posted is proving pretty popular, so I thought I'd do another! This one is in response to a question about arpeggiated runs, which are a common feature of cocktail or lounge bar piano style. Basically, an arpeggio run is a fast run up the piano keyboard using a broken chord. They have an interesting kind of shimmery effect which work really well in the relaxed context of a cocktail piece. One of the points I make here is that a really fast, basic arpeggio is actually really difficult to play. As such, I tend to use a fake method that involves playing each arpeggio twice in each octave, which gives your hand time to steady itself and your thumb time to get under. These kinds of arpeggiation work really well with rich, lush chords like maj11 and min9.

Secret Garden- Papillon

This is the fifth song from Secret Gardens album Songs From a Secret Garden, from 1995. "This is a somewhat impressionistic piece based on major 7ths and 9ths. The spirit of Erik Satie and Claude Debussy are present. The title Papillon (French for butterfly) also leans in that direction. This piece was written during a studio recording session in Iceland in 1994, and is perhaps the music I personally like best in the collection from a composers point of view. The phrases in the descending melody line are telling a story, and should not only be played as a broken chord. The music should be simple and delicate just like a butterfly dancing from one flower to another." -Rolf Lovland

Beethhoven's Concerto for Piano, Violin, and Cello in C, Op. 56 - "Triple Concerto"

Please visit the website of Ludwig van Beethoven, where this information was found - thank you - www.lvbeethoven.com The triple concerto is dedicated to Prince Franz Joseph Maximilian von Lobkowitz. The triple concerto would seem to have been composed between April-September 1804. It received its first known performance in May 1808, and was published in 1807 in Vienna, yet it had already been anticipated in 1802 by fairly substantial sketches for a work in D, calling for the same team of soloists. It may have been intended for a concert in spring of that year. However, the director of the theatre cancelled the concert, leaving Beethoven to turn his attention to the opera. After a difficult boyhood in Bonn, Beethoven had chosen to settle in his adoptive Vienna, and in the space of five or six years (making much allowance for the gestation and lengthy reworking of his ideas) produced a quantity of masterpieces astonishing by any standards, including the third symphony, the Waldstein and Appassionata sonatas, Fidelio, the Fourth Piano Concerto, the three Razumowsky Quartets and the Violin Concerto. At this time he was coming to terms with increasingly "meaty" sonata-form structures. The Waldstein and the triple concerto display the lengthiest first movements he had undertaken by that time, and several ideas in the concerto may have been distilled from the piano sonata. Triple concerto in C major: first movement - Allegro The forces are both unusual and formidable, and the ...

Chopin - Étude Op. 10 No. 12 in C minor "Revolutionary"

Étude Op. 10, No. 12 in C minor known as The Revolutionary Étude, is a solo piano work by Frédéric Chopin written circa 1831. It is the 12th of his first set of etudes - "Douze Grandes Etudes" dedicated to "son ami Franz Liszt" (his friend Franz Liszt). The two sets of Études, Opus 10 and 25, are known collectively as the Chopin Études, although Chopin also contributed three other lesser known études (the Trois Nouvelles Études). History The étude appeared around the same time as the November Uprising in 1831. Chopin was unable to have a strong participating role because of his poor health, and allegedly he poured his emotions on the matter into many pieces that he composed at that time - the Revolutionary Étude standing out as the most notable example. Upon conclusion of Poland's failed revolution against Russia, he cried "All this has caused me much pain. Who could have foreseen it!" Unlike études of prior periods (works designed to emphasize and develop particular aspects of musical technique, cf the much feared but essential School of Velocity, or the Five Finger Exercises by Hanon) the romantic études of composers such as Chopin and Liszt are fully developed musical concert pieces, but still continue to represent a goal of developing stronger technique Technique In the case of The Revolutionary Étude, the technique required in the opening bars is playing an extremely fast, long and loud descending harmonic minor scale mainly in the left hand. MUSIC THEORY: Applying I, IV, V Chords to any Melody

www.creativeguitarstudio.com Search Andrew Wasson.com for FREE lesson Handouts. This Video: October 14, 2011 | Search Videos by Title/Date. GO TO: www.andrewwasson.com Andrew Wasson of Creative Guitar Studio answers a viewers question... Q: I read in a music theory book that nearly any song can be broken down to using three chords played behind any melody built from the first, fourth and fifth chords found within the key. If this is true, can you explain this theory, and maybe even demonstrate it using a simple common melody to show how this might actually work? Max -- Sweden A: This is a very interesting concept and one which I was first introduced to by a teacher I had at a workshop where we were discussing the art of performing audience requests. You know, when someone comes up to the front of the stage and asks if the band knows a certain piece. And, that's when I first discovered that the chords of the three main chord families can be used to play pretty much any song requested to a band. That is -- so long as the singer knows the basic vocal melody and enough of the words to basically fake it. In the video I discuss why this works and I demonstrate the process with a well known piece. The complete lesson article for this video will be available on the Creative Guitar Studio website shortly.
