Noah Levine on Buddhism

Following the trend of many self-destructive youths, Noah Levine's search for meaning first led him to punk rock, drugs, drinking and dissatisfaction. Luckily, however, his search didn't end there. Having clearly seen the uselessness of drugs and violence, Noah looked for positive ways to channel his rebellion against what he saw as lies in society. Author of "Dharma Punx" and "Against the Stream," Levine is now a Buddhist teacher, author and counselor. At USC on Oct. 29, 2009, he talked about how he fueled his anger and energy into the practice of Buddhism to awaken his natural wisdom and compassion. The program is sponsored by the USC Office of Religious Life, in association with USC Spectrum Learn more about the University of Southern California: www.usc.edu Learn more about the USC Office of Religious Life orl.usc.edu Learn more about USC Spectrum: sait.usc.edu

Buddhism

Founded in India 2500 years ago, Buddhism remains the dominant religion of the Far East and is increasingly popular in the West. Over its long history Buddhist has developed into a wide variety of forms, ranging from an emphasis on religious rituals and worship of deities to a complete rejection of both rituals and deities in favor of pure meditation. But all share in common a great respect for the teachings of the Buddha, "The Enlightened One." Buddhism was founded by an Indian prince named Siddharta Gautama around the year 500 BCE. According to tradition, the young prince lived an affluent and sheltered life until a journey during which he saw an old man, a sick man, a poor man, and a corpse. Shocked and distressed at the suffering in the world, Gautama left his family to seek enlightenment through asceticism. But even the most extreme asceticism failed to bring enlightenment. Finally, Gautama sat beneath a tree and vowed not to move until he had attained enlightenment. Days later, he arose as the Buddha - the "enlightened one." He spent the remaining 45 years of his life teaching the path to liberation from suffering (the dharma) and establishing a community of monks (the sangha). Today, there are over 360 million followers of Buddhism. Although virtually extinct in its birthplace of India, it is prevalent throughout China, Japan and Southeast Asia. In the 20th century, Buddhism expanded its influence to the West and even to western religions. There are now over one ...

Big Bang Buddhism

This talk is dedicated to Ajahn Brahm's mother, Mrs Hazel Betts, who passed away on 16 February 2012. It is a profound talk about cosmic spirituality, explaining how the nature of this universe and how the nature of the mind, as Buddhists understand it, work seamlessly together. According to Ajahn Brahm, looking out through the telescope we see the vastness of the universe, but (metaphorically speaking); looking down the telescope in the opposite way, we see the mind. The mind is the larger of the two. By all accounts, proven scientifically, the mind is the initiator of everything that we think and do. So it is not the will, but the mind that gives the order, that initiates the processes of all our actions. Knowing that, Ajahn Brahm challenges us to let our mind do a big bang explosion and see where it leads us. He encourages us to have limitless imagination. As Einstein famously put it, "imagination is more important than learning".

Buddhist Chant - Shingon

Shingon Teaching Shingon is a form of Japanese Esoteric Buddhism, it is also called Shingon Mikkyo. This school was founded in 804 AD by Kukai (Kobo Daishi) in Japan. The teachings of Shingon are based on the Mahavairocana Sutra and the Vajrasekhara Sutra, the fundamental sutras of Shingon. Through the cultivation of three secrets, the actions of body, speech and mind, we are able to attain enlightenment in this very body. When we can sustain this state of mind, we can become one with the life force of the Universe, known as Mahavairocana Buddha. The symbolic activities are present anywhere in the universe. Natural phenomena such as mountains and oceans and even humans express the truth described in the sutras. The universe itself embodies and can not be separated from the teaching. In the Shingon tradition, the practitioner uses the same techniques that were used over 1200 years ago by Kukai, and have been transmitted orally generation after generation to the present. As Shingon Buddhists, there are three vows to observe in our lives: May we realize Buddhahood in this very life. May we dedicate ourselves to the well-being of people. May we establish the World of Buddha on this earth. Becoming a Buddha in This Very Life (Sokushin Jobutsu) The unique feature of this Shingon Teaching is that one does not become a Buddha only in his mind, nor does one become a Buddha after one has died. It means one is able to attain perfection of all of the qualities of a Buddha while one ...

CIA Archives: Buddhism in Burma - History, Politics and Culture

thefilmarchive.org Buddhism in Burma (also known as Myanmar) is predominantly of the Theravada tradition, practised by 89% of the country's population It is the most religious Buddhist country in terms of the proportion of monks in the population and proportion of income spent on religion. Adherents are most likely found among the dominant ethnic Bamar (or Burmans), Shan, Rakhine (Arakanese), Mon, Karen, and Chinese who are well integrated into Burmese society. Monks, collectively known as the Sangha, are venerated members of Burmese society. Among many ethnic groups in Myanmar, including the Bamar and Shan, Theravada Buddhism is practiced in conjunction with nat worship, which involves the placation of spirits who can intercede in worldly affairs. With regard to "salvation" in the Buddhist sense, there are three primary paths in Burmese Buddhism: merit-making, vipassana (insight meditation), and the weizza path (an esoteric form of Buddhism that involves the occult). Merit-making is the most common path undertaken by Burmese Buddhists. This path involves the observance of the Five Precepts and accumulation of good merit through charity and good deeds (dana) in order to obtain a favorable rebirth. The vipassana path, which has gained ground since the early 1900s, is a form of insight meditation believed to lead to enlightenment. The third and least common route, the weizza path, is an esoteric system of occult practices (such as recitation of spells, samatha meditation ...

Tibet: A Buddhist Trilogy (1984 Documentary)

Tibet: A Buddhist Trilogy is one of the very highly accomplished films to be made about our culture ... The film also captures the sense of inner peace and light-heartedness in the face of adversity, which many have remarked is a compelling quality of the Tibetan character. --His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama New direct-to-digital transfer and remaster from original 16mm film Bonus Features Include: Interview with the Producer and Director and the complete sound recording from a tantric Buddhist ritual Stunning cinematography, unprecedented access and informed direction take us on an intimate journey deep into the heart of the ancient Buddhist culture of Tibet. This is a classic work filmed in 16mm on location in India, Nepal and Ladakh during 1977. Hailed as a masterpiece, this is a spellbinding exploration of Tibetan Buddhism. Written and directed by Graham Coleman (editor of the recently released first complete translation of the Tibetan Book of the Dead) and produced and photographed by David Lascelles, the film features an intimate portrait of the Dalai Lama, a rare look at an ancient tantric ritual associated with the female deity Tara, commentary based on the teachings of the great 20th century Tibetan master Dudjom Rinpoche, and the moving response of a monastery to a death in the community. In making the Trilogy, we were searching for an immediacy, intimacy and unobtrusiveness, which had been so masterfully achieved in such classic documentaries as Robert ...

Is Buddhism A Religion? Buddhism vs. Christianity vs. Judaism vs. Islam

www.encognitive.com Is Buddhism a religion? Albert Einstein once said this of Buddhism, "The religion of the future will be a cosmic religion. It should transcend a personal God and avoid dogmas and theology. Covering both natural and spiritual, it should be based on a religious sense arising from the experience of all things, natural and spiritual and a meaningful unity. Buddhism answers this description. If there is any religion that would cope with modern scientific needs, it would be Buddhism." But is Buddhism a religion? Buddhism may qualify as a religion, depending on ones point of view. If you define religion as "a system of worship or devotion to a deity," than no, it would not be a religion; however, if you define religion as "a system of spiritual beliefs, rituals, and morals," then Buddhism would be a religion. There is no messiah, no prophet, and no deity in Buddhism. The basic premise of Buddhism is about a prince who lived a hedonistic life, then became enlightened and decided to live an ascetic life. Since there is no deity, messiah or prophet in Buddhism, you can be a Christian and a Buddhist, Muslim and Buddhist or Jew and Buddhist. And there would be no conflict. Some facts about Buddhism --Buddhism is about 550 years older than Christianity and 1100 older than Islam. --It's often registered with governments as a religion for tax purposes because most religious institutions pay little or no taxes. --Many who practice Buddhism consider it a philosophy or ...
