In collaboration with Timeslice Films, Rip Curl took on an ambitious bullet-time campaign shoot in Malaysia's Sunway Lagoon Wavepool with lead surfers Mick Fanning, Stephanie Gilmore, Owen Wright and Matt Wilkinson. The revolutionary campaign captures surfing in a way never seen before, with the final visuals baring more resemblance to a fight scene from the famous Matrix movies than a promotional surfing video. The two-day rental of Sunway Lagoon Wavepool allowed Rip Curl and Timeslice to operate in a more stable environment than the open ocean offers. The Rip Curl surfers were repeatedly towed into the machine-controlled waves by Jetski and their operational space was determined by the 52-camera rig set up in the pool. Mirage - Behind The Slice
Rip Curl has again created a technological world-first by capturing full-tilt surfing action using a "30 camera Array" -- a line of cameras firing consistently as surfers ride towards and past it. The results are unique "frozen moments of time" - that can be viewed in a combination of angles for a true in the round perspective. Rip Curl and TimeSlice, partners in the overall development, used GoPro HD video cameras to freeze an infinite number of moments that could be viewed. The major benefit being a better way of catching all the performance surfing the Rip Curl team riders were doing, rather than just a fraction of it. Combining our world class surf team of Mick Fanning, Owen Wright, Matt Wilkinson, Dillon Perillo and Dean Brady with the multi-frame array of cameras, gave us a Matrix style suite of "Mirage Moments", which pull the viewer in to the image, stalling there for long enough to enjoy a great move, before travelling down the line through the footage to the next Mirage Moment. Kill and Kill Again (1981) - Bullet Scene
Kill and Kill Again is a 1981 South African/American action film notable for being the first live-action film to use the visual effects known as bullet-time. The bullet-time scene occurs at the end, when Marduk has died and his chief guard is about to kill Dr. Kane while Steve is climbing up the outside of the building they're in. The guard fires his gun (at 1:36:10) and the bullet comes out very slowly and moves across the screen in a recognizable (but low-budget) early version of the famous scene in the Matrix. After ten seconds of the bullet flying across the room, Steve Chase has gotten up the building, gets inside the room, and deflects the bullet with a metal ashtray. This very low-budget "Bullet-Time-Slice" sequence was achieved very simply indeed, totally 'in-camera' with no post - production effects added at all. The first shot of the bullet exiting the barrel of the gun was shot in close-up with the barrel removed from the frame of the gun locked-off pointing downwards but with the camera also turned on its side, framing the barrel horisontally, but pointing down toward the floor. ( When viewed 'upright,' this would then appear to be pointing at the subject in a correct manner.) A bullet, smaller in diameter of the inside of the barrel, was then dropped down thru the barrel with the addition of a puff of smoke from a cigarette also down the barrel shot at 120fps to create the desired effect.
