To complete this How-To you will need: Data A calculator Step 1: Collect your data Collect your data to create the data set from which you wish to calculate the standard deviation. Step 2: Calculate the mean of the data set Calculate the average, or mean, of the data set by adding all of the numbers of the set and dividing the total by the number of items in your set. Tip: Calculate the mean of a set consisting of two, five, six, and seven by adding two plus five plus six plus seven, and then dividing by four -- the number of items in your set. The mean is five. Step 3: Subtract the mean from each number; square result Subtract the mean from the first number in your data set, and square the differences. Continue with each number in your data set. Tip: With the set consisting of two, five, six, and seven, calculate two minus five and get negative three. Square that for a total of nine. Continue with the other numbers in the ...

How to Calculate Your Gas Mileage

Mix your music! Learn GarageBand in 30 Days! mhlo.co In this video, Mahalo math expert Julie Clark shows you how to calculate your gas mileage. Step 1: Start with a Full Tank --------------------------------------------------------------------- * Take your car to a gas station and fill up your tank. Write down the exact mileage found on your odometer reading.* Drive around like you normally would until your car needs refueling. * Fill up your tank again, and this time, record how many gallons it takes. You can find this number on the gas pump. www.fueleconomy.gov Step 2: Calculate Your Gas Mileage --------------------------------------------------------------------- * Check your odometer reading again and write down the new number * Subtract the first odometer reading from the second one. This will tell you how many miles you've driven. * Divide this number by the number of gallons it took to fill your car. The resulting number is your car's current miles per gallon. www.fueleconomy.gov 300 miles driven/15 gallons of gas=20 miles per gallon Read more by visiting our page at: www.mahalo.com

How to Calculate the Volume of a Sphere

Mix your music! Learn GarageBand in 30 Days! mhlo.co Mahalo math expert Allison Moffett shows you how to calculate the volume of a sphere. What Is a Sphere? --------------------------------------------------------------------- A sphere is the 3-dimensional version of a circle, like a ball or a marble. It is perfectly symmetrical; all points on the surface are exactly the same distance from the center (the measurement of this distance is the sphere's radius). It is also perfectly smooth; it has no flat edges or vertices (corners).cThe volume of a sphere is a geometrical measurement of the 3-dimensional space occupied by the sphere. For example, if you wanted to calculate the amount of water contained in a water balloon (assuming the water balloon were a perfect sphere), you would be looking for the water balloon's volume.c The formula used to calculate the volume of a sphere is V=(4/3)πr3.c Step 1: Find the Radius of the Sphere --------------------------------------------------------------------- Before finding the volume of a sphere, it is helpful to know the values of different parts of the volume formula. One part of the formula is the radius of the sphere. Just as the radius of a circle is the distance from the midpoint of the circle to the outer edge, the radius of the sphere is the distance from the center of the sphere to any point on the sphere's surface.c This is denoted r³ and it is one-third of the formula for finding the volume of a cube.c Step 2: Understand ...
