Every time I hear this song, I think of Bob Ralston playing it on the electric harpsichord on the Lawrence Welk show in the 1960s. Here's my version of this fun classic -- with only a passing nod to Ralston's harpsichord! Played live by David and his Open Art Orchestra.

Kolkata (Calcutta) কলকাতা Part 1 - West Bengal, India

nomadicsamuel.com Kolkata (Bengali: কলকাতা [ˈkolkat̪a]), formerly known as Calcutta, is the capital of the Indian state of West Bengal and a Gamma World City. Kolkata is the commercial capital of East India, located on the east bank of the Hooghly River.[5] The Kolkata metropolitan area, including suburbs, has a population approximately 15.7 million, making it the third most populous metropolitan area in India and the 13th most populous urban area in the world. The city is also classified as the eighth largest urban agglomeration in the world.[6] Kolkata served as the capital of India during the British Raj until 1911 when due to geographical disadvantages and growing nationalism in Bengal the capital was shifted to New Delhi. The city is noted for its vibrant political culture, ranging from the Indian struggle for independence to contemporary politics. Once the center of modern education, science, culture and politics in India, Kolkata witnessed economic stagnation in the years following India's independence in 1947. However, since the year 2000, an economic rejuvenation has led to an acceleration in the city's growth. Like other metropolitan cities of India, Kolkata continues to struggle with urbanisation problems like poverty, pollution and traffic congestion. The name Kolkata and the anglicised name Calcutta have their roots in Kalikata, the name of one of the three villages (Kalikata, Sutanuti, Govindapur) in the area before the arrival of the British.[7 ...

Panorama of Calcutta (1899)

This is one of the earliest films to be shot in India - it was filmed in 1899. The film apparently shows the Kolkata (Calcutta) ghats as seen from the perspective of a boat travelling along the Hooghly river, a tributary of the Ganges. However, although the film's title states that this is Calcutta, the footage was in fact shot in the holy city of Varanasi (also on the Ganges). The filmmaker from the Warwick Trading Company clearly had a short memory or a limited sense of geography. (Robin Baker) This film is included on the BFI DVD of Jean Renoir's 'The River' - filmstore.bfi.org.uk You can watch almost 1000 other complete films and TV programmes from the BFI National Archive free of charge at the new BFI Mediatheque - www.bfi.org.uk

CityScapes - Calcutta

'Cityscapes' is a six part series on six cities of India representing the diverse nature and histories of cities in India. 'Calcutta' tells the history of the city from its birth in 1690 with the advent of a merchant of the British East India Company. Built on the banks of the river Hooghly, the city developed as a trading hub of British India in the east to become the most important city of the British Empire outside of London. British traders' quest for political power came in conflict with the Nawabs of Bengal. The influence of this conflict was significant on the culture of the city. In 1912 the city ceased to be the capital of the British Raj, but Calcutta continued to be a centre of cultural creativity. The film traces this glorious history through the archival footage, reconstructed visuals, and memories of renowned artistes of the city.

Lawrence Welk & His Orchestra - Calcutta (Original Stereo)

Lawrence Welk's bandleading career stretched from the 1920's into the 1980's, and he became one of the most recognizable faces and voices of music for an entire generation. "Calcutta" was written by Heino Gaze and Hans Bradtke in 1960 and popularly recorded as an instrumental by the Welk orchestra that same year. It became the #1 song on the pop charts in January of 1961 making Lawrence Welk as the oldest individual (age 57 at the time) to ever have a #1 song (Louis Armstrong at age 62 would surpass him with "Hello, Dolly" in 1964)..
