This is a review and demonstration on the Camillus Pilot Survival Knife. It's also known as the Ontario 499 ASEK. I've added a fire steel rod, paracord, tinfoil, a fishing hook and line, duct tape and reflective tape to the sheath to make it into a survival kit. This knife is heavy for it's size and is handle-heavy. The extra weight is easily justfied by the hammering capability of the butt cap-which is awesome! The blade is 4-7/8" long and is made of 1095 tool steel, which is easy to sharpen. The saw teeth on the spine work well on wire and nails, but fall short on cutting metal and plastic sheeting.The size of the blade and the protective metal casing on the sheath make this a safe choice for all skill levels. The Camillus Pilot Survival Knife is on the "must have" list of many survivalists for three simple reasons: It's a comfortable, safe, and reliable survival tool. Which knife is better, the SOG SEAL Pup or the Camillus Pilot Survival Knife? They're similar in size but differ greatly in weight and blade material. I'd recommend the SOG SEAL Pup knife to anyone looking for a decent camping/utility knife. A straight edge would be better for bushcraft, but for urban survival applications, the serrations will gnaw right through metals, plastics, nylons, and other synthetics with ease. Contrary to probably everyone else, I am not a big fan of the Blaze knife for EDC. As set forth in the video, it has several quirks that do not stack up well against the competition and make it uncomfortable to carry. But with that said, having been true to my truth mission in my reviews, it is still sad to see the great company of Camillus gone from the knife world and hope they resurect with even better designs. But for now the company is gone and that makes this and other Camillus designs collectible. On the good side, the Blaze does have a well designed blade from good steel which might engender it with some for EDC.

A beautiful big Bowie Style knife is always a handy item around the farm! The knifemaker is not a big time knifemaker and just has a few of these Bowie knives left. Big, striking in appearance, fast, deadly....and now collectible. That's the CUDA MAXX 5.5 folding fighting knife by the now defunct Camillus knife company (this was a production version of Darrel Ralph's CUDA design). It's D2 steel blade is razor sharp and holds an edge well. The titanium frame lock handle is a striking bluish purple and provides lots of real estate for gripping and non-lethal pommeling. The lockup is rock solid, the flipper deployment wicked fast (who needs an auto?!), and the fit and finish throughout is first class. Downsides would be a somewhat slick handle (necessitated by the aesthetics) and pivot-mounted clip. But the CUDA MAXX 5.5 remains both a large, effective, and fast fighting knife that also serves as an impressive collectible.

If you need a rescue knife, buy this one while you still can. It has the best shaped rescue blade that I've found in a folding knife to date. At 4.0 oz it's a reasonable carry weight too. Other features include fast assisted opening, tight lockup, excellent non-injuring blade curvature, perfect serrations, glass breaker tip, and useful bright orange color. This is my favorite blade of the Heat/Sizzle/Blaze series of Camillus knives. Sadly this is a collector's item as the Camillus is out of business as of this date. Coupled with that and just its limited production, the Rescue Heat is a hard knife to find. If you want reasonably priced and excellent blade that you can effect a water or automotive rescue with, this might be it.

Ethan Becker simply got it right with his design of this knife. The Camillus-made BK-7 Combat Utility successfully strikes the balance between fighting effectiveness and wilderness utility. The bowie-shaped blade offers good reach, a sharpened tip, and decent sweep for both stabbing and slashing. The broad blade would do severe damage to any opponent unfortunate enough to be run through. The full, flat grind and decent width make the knife effective for wood processing, as does the extremely tough 0170-6C steel. The handle is robust and well-contoured, although could use some texturing to allow a good grip in wet conditions. The weight of the knife is mostly towards the handle, keeping the blade extremely fast and nimble. You can still chop well with it, though, if you use a rearward grip as demonstrated in the video. The sheath is a low point, with poor durability and limited attachment possibilities. Still, the knife is so well designed that if one wanted to make this their primary edged tool, they could have a custom sheath made as well as modified handle slabs. If you're not planning to keep this as a collectible, it just might be worth it. 8.5/10

It seems amazing that this Camillus MC-1 was to be depended upon to possibly save your life if you were (are) a paratrooper or pilot. But indeed that is what the old MC-1 was designed to do. Using a manually deployed hook blade and torsion spring powered clip blade, it was designed to primarily cut entangled parachute shroud lines by the user. But the design is fraught with several key problems. the hook is an ineffective line cutter requiring a lot of force for effect, it is extremely slow and near impossible to deploy under stress or frigid hands, the main blade rebounds out of lock during deployment, the steel rusts easily, the knife lacks a clip or quick attach device, and the main blade lockup is atrocious. Today there are many more viable line cutting options including the well-designed SOG Bi-Polar which features both an assisted opening line cutter and main blade. Even better for cold hands would be the Benchmade Rescue 5 hook (shown, see Nutnfancy video on it) which requires no special deployment, is easily manipulated, and very lightweight. But the Camillus MC-1 remains a historical part of military airborne operations and will hold keen interest for some in that respect. //////////////////Nutnfancy Likeability Scale: 0 out of 10

This knife was one of my favorite all time survival knives. But experience taught me that it was missing several key features, and the overall design had inherent limitations. The weight-forward design make it an effective chopper, and the handle was big and hand-filling. But the lack of texture on the handle or spine limit how much control you have, especially in wet conditions. The grind does not lend itself to a very sharp edge, and a flat grind with a spine of full thickness would actually chop and split more effectively than this knife, despite its whopping 22 oz. of weight. Knowing what I do now, I wouldn't buy this knife. That being said, it's given me great pleasure over the years and I did enjoy it. 6/10
