In fact, it's best if you intentionally swamp your canoe in calm water and practice the techniques you'll need. That's what I've done here. (yeah, stick to that story, dad!) hey! I don't need your help! Well, actually, I do. Since even a canoe full of water will float, stay with it. You'll be safer and more visible to other boaters. If it's upright, swim it to shore. If the canoe is upside down and you're in flat or slow-moving water you can stand in, raise one end of the canoe to the water's surface. Push down on the opposite end while lifting one gunwale to break the water's suction. Lift the canoe clear of the water, let it drain a few seconds, then roll it upright and guide it to shore. You can re-enter a canoe in deep water, but you will need to practice this. Place your hands on both gunwales (gunnel), near the wide section of the canoe, or in the middle of the bottom, depending on your arm length and strength. Pressing down with both hands and using a strong kick, lift your body upwards until the hips are across the nearest gunwale. Roll onto your back and sit in the bottom of the canoe before bringing your legs in...then use your paddles or hands to propel yourself to shore. If you swamp in swift current, get to the upstream side of the canoe, grab the end nearest the safest shore. Then staying upstream of <b>...</b>

mdc4.mdc.mo.gov My family loves to go floating. If you've never tried it, we can get you started. Most important: always wear a life vest...even if you're a strong swimmer. Canoes are unstable, so to be safe, stay low...stay in the middle...and don't move around a lot. Hold the paddle with one hand over the grip, and the other about 6-inches above the blade. Insert the blade near the side of the canoe and dig down until your bottom hand almost touches the water, and sweep back. As the blade leaves the water, flatten it like an airplane wing. Bring the blade forward...keeping it close to the water...and repeat. To move backwards, reverse the motion. To turn the canoe, use a drawstroke. Insert the paddle out in the water with the flat side facing you. Pull back with your lower hand. Reverse that stroke to turn back. Insert the paddle right next to the canoe and push away with the bottom hand. These are basic beginner strokes. The stern paddler needs to know a variety of strokes to steer...so put the beginner up front.

A few moments later the show went to correspondent Michelle Kosinski, reporting on location about the floods in New Jersey. Kosinski was canoeing what looked to be in deep water. However as the segment begin two men walked in front of her in what looked to be a few inches of water. mdc4.mdc.mo.gov Floating one of Missouri's beautiful streams is a great way to spend a family weekend...and if it's something you like to do often, you'll probably want your own canoe. Here are a few tips on what to look for when you shop: canoes are divided into categories by size: tandem or solo...and by open or covered deck. A solo canoe can carry an adult and child, where a tandem can fit up to two adults and one or two small children or an adult and two children. Covered canoes are used strictly for whitewater. Try before you buy. Borrow different kinds of canoes from friends or rent them from commercial canoe renters. During a test paddle, take a single stroke, then pause to see if the canoe continues to glide easily. Lean outward to see if it threatens to tip, or if it does tip. And be sure to lift each model to get an idea how much weight you can handle. An "all purpose" canoe is good for first-timers. Look for a 16 to 17 foot flat bottom. It's steady and safe with some maneuverability. Fiberglass and kevlar are the most popular materials...they offer good resistance to damage caused by dragging over gravel bars. If you plan to do your paddling in moving water, a keel may give you more stability and helps protect the bottom of your canoe. You can expect to spend between 450 and a thousand dollars for a new, well-designed pleasure canoe. And remember, if you buy a poorly-designed canoe, you may not enjoy the activity, and you'll never know that the canoe design was <b>...</b>

I was putting together some food for an eight day canoe trip in Algonquin Provincial Park and thought I might as well take ten minutes to put it on tape and toss it up on good 'ol YouTube. Hopefully it will give some ideas for other canoe trippers or hikers out there as well as inspire some fellow trippers to fire some off their own favorite recipes for me to try out on the trail. As I mention in this video, this is more food than required but makes for a comfortable trip. When I do solo tripping I tend to bring much less but when going with friends I'd rather be 100% positive we'll have enough. I don't mind being a little hungry if I packed on the light side for food but I don't like others to suffer for having less food than they're comfortable with.
