Just wanted to share this with anyone who is interested in buying a wonderful new Canon 7D. I got mine a week ago and I finally had a chance to go out and shoot something yesterday. I have a friend who is a WW2 reenactor (The German soldier) and he was heading over mine for the weekend anyway. I told him to bring his stuff so I could test out the 7D at taking photos, when we got there we thought we might as well do some video too. So this is what came out of us messing around for an hour. Its all hand held so there is a little jellow cam going on and I was just using the LCD on the back for monitoring, so focus aint so great either. All in all I'm pleased with it. Took an hour to shoot and half a day to edit, and another bloody half a day to render! All shot with the Canon 7D hand held (no rig) and the Canon EF 50mm 1.8. Shot at 1080p 24p Graded with magic bullet All sound done in post.

On a technical note The entire video was shot on a Canon 7D, all in 720P, at 60fps (frames per second). I used a couple different Canon lenses to shoot this, they were... Canon 70-200 F/2.8 Canon 100-400 F/4/5.6 Canon 2X III Extender (this makes the lens when it is at 400mm, become 800 mm's. It does loose some quality, but it's not very noticeable.) The entire video was shot all on the North Shore, at Pipeline, and Waimea for the big waves. To get the "super slow motion", after I filmed at 60fps, I through it into the program "After Effects". I used an effect that comes with the program called "Time Warp". This allowed me to make the 60fps, to 1000fps. The way this works is the computer processes/adds frames in between the frames that are already in existence. It took several days for the computer to process the clips into <b>...</b>

These are some test short films that Jake & I made while dog sitting for Cortney last night. The camera works extremely well in low light conditions as seen in FIRE, Great with fast paced movement as seen in FIDO, excellent control with focus and extreme close up in 5 DRESSES and good for keeping it campy as seen in GIFT. The video has not been enhanced in or edited in anyway besides cutting clip length. Video quality is what we got straight off the camera filmed in normal apartment lighting conditions. New video here!: www.youtube.com After watching some Top Gear, I was determined to try and emulate their style, but then add a bit of my own. The car is an outils wolf lawn mower. How I did it/tips: Well, there really isn't much to it, i filmed all my shots in 24p, i put my shooting style to as dull as possible to preserve dynamic range, just simple tripod panning shots, in terms of editing, find your music first, and then edit to that music. In terms of colours, I used red giant's awesome "Looks Pro". I desaturated, increased contrast, added a graduated filter darkening the top.Then of course, the iconic top gear corner vignette. To get the top gear style shots on the panning shots, i would pan steadily, then it editing, speed up most of it to 1000% of the original speed, and leave one part to be slowly, that gives the effect of a quick pan moving to a slow pan, which is very top gear. Take a look at the shot that is primarily red, of the gas-meter, that's the technique i used for that, and pretty much every shot. In terms of focusing, like where the drums enter and break the classical music, it's just trial and error i suppose. A couple of short video clips -- one taken in shadow, the other in bright (setting) sun -- provides a comparison between two cameras, the Canon 7D and the iPhone 4S. Clearly, these two cameras are intended for a very different type of user, and there's no real comparison between the two cameras. The 7D has infinitely more flexibility to truly "dial in" the exact settings desired for a particular scene being shot. However, here, in this demonstration, I didn't attempt to really dial in anything. I just went with my standard settings on the Canon 7D. Without going into a lot of detail, suffice it to say that I use a "User Defined" picture style on the Canon (similar to the one recommended by filmmaker Philip Bloom). And all I really did on exposure settings was to fiddle enough with the ISO and aperture to bring the exposure within reasonable range of "normal." If I was actually shooting something that was important to me, I would have spent a lot more time on the settings. What you'll see here, however, is that the iPhone 4S holds its own quite nicely against the 7D. The 7D has a much softer look (something I actually prefer about it in many situations). But the harder-edged iPhone 4S look is also quite pleasing to my eye, and I'm sure to some, it is superior. But make no mistake, the 7D can run circles around the iPhone 4S. There really is no comparison between the two cameras. But this side-by-side examination does provide some interesting contrasts, and reveals that the <b>...</b>

Finding the right perch, getting the bird to land on the perch at the right spot, placement of the perch....etc...becomes very tedious. I experimented with a few different perches after this video. another test video with the Canon 7D under low light. as you can tell there's still noise in most of the shots, the ISO was pretty high up because of the lighting conditions. i'm still learning and practicing with all the settings, so don't jump my throat, because i'm not a professional film maker. just got this last week so i'm still in the learning process of how everything works. but let me know what you guys think, feedback is always a good thing. as i said in my previous video "The Fountain" i will be posting videos like this either monthly or bi-weekly of random things or events. so keep posted for more!
