Cantiga 10 "Rosa Das Rosas"

Cantigas de Santa María Performers: Malandança (Unha noite na corte do rei Alfonso X) English translation: Rose of roses and flower of flowers, Lady of ladies, Lord of lords. Rose of beauty and fine appearance And flower of happiness and pleasure, lady of most merciful bearing, And Lord for relieving all woes and cares; Such a Mistress everybody should love, For she can ward away any evil And she can pardon any sinner To create a better savor in this world. We should love and serve her loyally, For she can guard us from falling; She makes us repent the errors That we have committed as sinners: This lady whom I acknowledge as my Master And whose troubadour I'd gladly be, If I could in any way possess her love, I'd give up all my other lovers.

Cantigas de Santa María "Alfonso X el Sabio" There was a good man in Plasencia who was generous and devoted to the Virgin. He always fasted on the vigils of her feast days and he heard her hours. There was also a knight in Plasencia who was getting married. He had bulls brought into the city for the wedding. The knight had the fiercest bull set loose to run in a square in front of the good mans house. The latter had no interest in the spectacle, but went outside to visit a close friend of his, a priest named Matthew. As soon as the good man had gone outside, the bull lunged at him and tried to gore his back. Matthew, the priest, seeing this from a window, asked the Virgin to save his friend. The Virgin made the bull fall to the ground and lie prostrate as if about to die. It stayed in this position until the good man reached the priests house and was escorted inside. Afterwards, the bull got up and never harmed anyone from that time on.

CANTIGA 37 (Miragres fremosos faz por nos)

This is how Holy Mary restored the foot of the man who had cut it off because of the great pain he suffered. "Holy Mary performs beautiful and marvelous miracles for our sake" She performs beautiful and marvelous miracles so that we may believe in God and fear him more. Therefore, it is well that we relate one of the most merciful of these to you. This happened in the land they call Vivarais (Viviers, France) to an unfortunate man who had a burning pain in his foot and who lay before the altar in Holy Mary's church among other afflicted persons. That fiery malady distressed him so much that he had his foot cut off because of the pain and joined the ranks of the most deformed cripples. In spite of all this, however, he still trusted in Holy Mary and called upon Her mercy to speedily perform a miracle for him. He prayed: "Oh, Virgin, you who are ever the shield of the unfortunate, may it be your will to come to my aid, else I shall henceforth be considered one of the most miserable of creatures." Then the Holy Virgin, while he slept, passed Her hand many times back and forth across that foot, healing the flesh with Her deft fingers. When he awoke, he felt himself whole again and looked at his foot. When he had made certain that it was there, he began to walk about in a spritely manner. All who heard of this came at once to see and gave thanks to the Holy Virgin. They exalted Her miracles as more glorious than any others. Performers: Hespèrion XX-La Capella Reial de Catalunya

In the thirteenth century, King Alfonso X, el Sabio (the Wise) gathered together in his Cantigas de Santa Maria four hundred songs (cantigas). These mystical, non-liturgical pieces were sung at various festivities, sometimes - as we see in illuminated manuscripts - accompanied by dancing. Their form, verses with refrains, lends itself to various alternations: soloist-chorus, dialogue between texts and instruments, etc. The Cantigas involve celebration, dancing, storytelling and tales of miracles. The language used is Gallego-Portuguese, the language of lyric poetry at that time. .How Holy Mary saved a man whom they stoned from dying until he confessed, because he fasted on the eve of her feast days. "To him who deprives himself of what he likes for the Virgin's sake, She will always show the blessing which She will give him later." Concerning this, I shall relate to you a very great miracle which I heard from those who saw it. They told it just as I shall tell you now. According to what I learned, Holy Mary performed it in the land which is near both seas, the large one which encircles the land and the other one called Minor (The Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea). Holy Mary, Mother of Our Lord, did this for a man. He who hears this will take pleasure in fasting for Her feast day in March (The Annunciation), as this man had done for a long time. Because he went to Jerez and Seville more than once when they belonged to the Moors, he was accused and arrested because he had gone there without orders. He was sentenced unconditionally to be killed by stoning because he committed this crime. While they were striking him, he called to the Spiritual Queen, saying: "Oh, My Lady, help me, as you have helped those who believe in you with all their hearts. Therefore, let me not die without confession and suffer this martyrdom, for I always trusted you." Then those who were killing him said: "Why is it that no matter how many stones we throw we cannot kill him?"

* * * * * * * How Holy Mary took the soul of a friar who painted Her name in three colors. "The One who for Her great beauty is called Flower of flowers is much more pleased when they praise Her name than by other praises." Concerning this, I shall tell a miracle, as it was told to me, which happened to a good ordained monk who gladly said the hours of this Virgin and took more pleasure in this than any other pleasure. This man was a good priest and zealously read in the lives of the Holy Fathers and also wrote very well. Whenever he ...

A rich man in Venice had only one son because all the rest of his children had died. He sent the boy to live in a monastery to be raised by the abbot. The abbot, who called the boy his son, let him play in the cloister. While playing, the boy often went into the church where he admired a statue of the Virgin and Child. He was captivated by the Child and went to see him often. He decided to offer him a portion of the meal they gave him. He went to the church, climbed up on the altar and laid the food out in front of the statue. He promised to bring the Child food everyday, and encouraged him to eat. The boy did this for fifteen days. Then the statue of the Child spoke to him, bidding him to eat at his Fathers table the next day. The abbot, noticing that the boy was growing thin, questioned him. The boy said that he had been sharing his food with the Child on the altar and explained that the Child had asked him to dinner. The abbot, after asking the child if he could accompany him, assembled his monks. He told them that he would be leaving and appointed a successor, a monk named don Mateus. That night both the abbot and the boy fell ill; at the sixth hour they were taken to heaven.

This first song of praise enumerates the seven joys of Holy Mary. From today i wish to sing only to the Lady in whom God wished to become incarnated to enable us to inherit eternal life. And i wish to begin recalling how she was greeted by Gabriel "Blessed Virgen, behold, you are now with child from God." And I wish to recall how she went to Bethlehem and gave birth to Jesus and placed him in a manger amongst animals. And I wish not to forget how the angels sang "Peace on earth" and how the three Kings came from foreign lands over seas to make their offering. I also wish to relate what Magdalen told her about the angel at the door of the tomb, who had said that Christ had resurrected. And I also wish to reveal the gladness she felt when she beheld her Son ascend to heaven within a cloud. I cannot fail to recount how both she and the apostles received the grace of God to enable them to preach. And, for God's sake, I must not remain silent about how she was crowned when her son chose to take her to heaven.

Cantiga 100 "Santa Maria Strela do dia"

Mary, magnified be, with Daystar beside thee; show the way where bide we true to God and thou our guide be. For thou art light that lost souls driven near perdition, e'er with sin ill striven, know that they with guilt sore riven stand; but throught thee are forgive and from their pride free where they ne'er idly let passion denied be bout did all sense defied see. Thou canst reveal to us wyfaring paths to tread in grace full sharing to peerless Light, the trugh declaring, that thou alone art graced in bearing; for God would abide thee and all provide He but ne'er thee denied see nor for thee grace e'er belied be. CANTIGA 295 (Que por al non devess)

How Holy Mary appeared in a vision to a king (this is Alfonso X) who served her to the best of his knowledge and ability, and it seemed to him that She bowed toward him in recognition of the service he had done for Her. "If for no other reason, a man should serve Holy Mary for Her generosity in rewarding service." Concerning this, I wish to relate for you now a great miracle which Holy Mary performed, according to what I could find out, for a king who constantly had stately and beautiful statues made of Her and had them dressed in rich clothes of gold, sumptuously embroidered. To further beautify them and enhance their appearance, he put crowns with many precious stones on their heads which gave splendor to each statue and made it shine. Furthermore, on Her feast days he had the clothes changed to even richer ones to give the feast greater honor and had the statues placed upon the altar. In addiction, he wrote songs for Her, as I was informed. Those songs were about Her many and marvelous miracles which God performs through Her, and He is right to do so, for, according to what Saint Matthew, Saint John, and Saint Mark say, She is His Mother beyond doubt. And so, for these reasons, the king served Her and praised Her and spoke highly of Her, as I learned. Therefore, what I shall tell you now happened to him, hence I pray, my friends, that you will hear it. It was on Easter, when God arose, that the king made his statue of the Virgin. And when he saw it so well made and ...

Cantiga 23 "Como Deus fez vynno d'agua"

This is how Holy Mary replenished the wine in the cask out of love for the good lady of England. "As God made wine from water before the governor of the feast (John 2:1-11/the marriage of Cana), so on another occasion His Mother ...

Cantiga 7 "Santa Maria amar"

This is how Holy Mary saved the pregnant abbess who had gone to sleep weeping before Her altar. "We should love Holy Mary and ...
