Countries that carried out executions in 2011 did so at an alarming rate but those employing capital punishment have decreased by more than a third compared to a decade ago. Only 10 percent of countries in the world, 20 out of 198, carried out executions last year. People were executed or sentenced to death for a range of offences including adultery and sodomy in Iran, blasphemy in Pakistan, sorcery in Saudi Arabia, the trafficking of human bones in the Republic of Congo, and drug offences in more than 10 countries. Methods of execution in 2011 included beheading, hanging, lethal injection and shooting. Some 18750 people remained under sentence of death at the end of 2011 and at least 676 people were executed worldwide. Amnesty International opposes the death penalty in all cases without exception regardless of the nature of the crime, the characteristics of the offender or the method used by the state to carry out the execution. The death penalty violates the right to life and is the ultimate cruel, inhuman and degrading punishment.

First, capital punishment does not comport with Jesus' teaching as presented in the New Testament and, therefore, it is odd that Christians support capital punishment in such significant numbers. (BTW, I am well aware of the fact that there is reason to doubt that the story of the woman taken in adultery is original to the Gospel of John. So there is no need to point that out. I must confess being amused by some atheists suggesting that because of this we cannot know that John 8:7 presents Jesus' actual words--as if we can know that Jesus said ANY of what is attributed to him in any of the gospels. Come on, nonbelievers: you should know better and get the point of my raising this story in the video.) Second, opponents of the death penalty populate all points on the ideological spectrum; they're not exclusively liberals or leftists. Third, since the death penalty is irreversible, it necessarily presents a significant risk to society because the criminal justice system that administers the penalty is fallible. Society can punish criminals, defend public order, and protect people's safety without the death penalty. Moreover, without the death penalty, society does not run the risk of wrongfully executing an innocent person—a penalty it can never reverse or remediate in any way. The Connecticut state Senate voted Thursday to abolish the death penalty in Connecticut, a state that has executed only one prisoner in a half-century and is now on track to join a national trend away from capital punishment. After more than 10 hours of debate, the Senate approved legislation that would set life imprisonment as the maximum punishment for all future cases. The bill, which has the support of the state's Democratic governor, now goes to the Democrat-controlled House, where it's expected to win approval.

In its latest report Amnesty says that the number of countries who have the death penalty is declining but there has been a surge in the Middle East last year.

The electric chair, invented in America, first used in 1890, was the instrument of death in more than 25 states throughout the 20th century. Since the death penalty was reinstated in 1976 after a ten-year moratorium, more than 4300 persons have been electrocuted in chairs given such nicknames as Old Sparky, Sizzlin Sally, Ol Smokey, Yellow Mama and Gruesume Gertie. Alabama, Florida, South Carolina and Virginia now have electrocution as an optional form of execution (the alternative being lethal injection). In Tennessee and Kentucky inmates whose crimes were committed before those states legislated lethal injection may chose electrocution instead (some choice). In Illinois and Oklahoma the electric chair may be chosen as an alternate form of execution if other forms are found unconstitutional in the state at the time of execution. I searched for an actual film or video of an electrocution, but was unable to find one. The descriptions in this video are gruesome, but I wanted people to see what capital punishment actually looks like, in the hope that more would be moved to end it. Currently a clear majority of Americans "believe in" capital punishment. I think it's because they haven't given much thought to it beyond "an eye for an eye." Public opinion surveys from the 1990s showed near total support for its use. Some claim such opinions are deeply rooted in 'Chinese culture'. However, in this lecture the presenter will claim that this represents a misconception of Chinese culture and that capital punishment has more to do with politics. Opinions in China regarding the death penalty have changed dramatically over the last decade as they have in the rest of the world. Dr Borge Bakken is Director of the Criminology Masters Programme at the Department of Sociology, the University of Hong Kong. He has written extensively on crime, control, deviance and cultural norms in China. Among his books are The Exemplary Society: Human Improvement, Social Control, and the Dangers of Modernity in China (Oxford University Press, 2000) and Crime, Punishment and Policing in China (Rowman & Littlefield, 2007).
