Con brio (5:34) Liner notes: Begun in 1975 and published in 1976, the "Six Capriccios for violin" are one year's experience older than the "Three Brilliant Nocturnes for viola". Here too, the sonority has been thoroughly investigated with fanciful rigor (the contradiction is only apparent), leading to an extreme diminution of emission. But if Sciarrino's game of harmonics suspends the musical line from astral heights and seems to cling, in a sort of musical tight-rope act, to filigrees of an almost flirtatious lightness, then sudden changes of startling dynamic intensity, from "pp" to "ff" and vice versa, or the intrusion of new methods of sound production (dizzyingly rapid glissandos, "spazzolati" [brushed sounds]) widen the angle of perspective to eard of refractions. Heavenly lightness competes, voluptuously, with the earthy weight of metallic harshness and winks, diabolically, at the perfidiousness of the arabesque. Virtuosity mocks itself. Paganini, more than a model, is used as the fossil from whom have descended unpredictable deviations. The obsession with which a technical figure is developed in each capriccio as the germinal cell for the entire piece is reminiscent of the structure of an étude. Steven Honigberg, 'cello Kathryn Brake, piano from Albany TROY082 (1992) www.albanyrecords.com Steven Honigberg has chosen a program of music for cello composed in the United States during the 20th century - five works in diverse forms and styles spanning the years 1932 through 1989. These are strong characterized works that have provoked deep personal response on Mr. Honigberg's part, and in several cases he has had the benefit of coaching or conferring with either the respective composer or the senior colleague for whom the music was created. Heralded as a "sterling cellist" by the Washington Post, Steven Honigberg made his New York recital debut at Weill Hall in 1984. He has appeared as guest soloist with the Chicago Symphony and other orchestras throughout the US He earned rave reviews when he and fellow cellist David Teie premiered David Ott's Concerto for Two Cellos in 1988 with the National Symphony Orchestra, Mstislav Rostropovich conducting. Honigberg, a member of the National Symphony since 1984, is also Artistic Director of the chamber music series at the Holocaust Museum. He graduated from the Juilliard School of Music where he studied with Leonard Rose and Channing Robbins. Carlo Munier from Napoli was one of Italy's greatest mandolinists ever. Born in Naples on July 15, 1859, he was at a very early age recognized as mandolin virtuoso of the highest rank. Besides his activities as an outstanding performer he was also highly regarded as a teacher and composer. Many compositions of his hand - he wrote over 300 works for mandolin in all kinds of strengths - are written for his students and composed with the idea of elevating the mandolin and its unique possibilities as a concert instrument. Carlo Munier died in Florence on February 11, 1911. This video shows one of the twelve 'Capricci-Studi' (Op.17) for mandolin solo by Carlo Munier (1859-1911) played by Ferdinand Binnendijk on a Roman concert mandolin model no. 5bis made in July 2010 by the Dutch Luthier Hendrik van den Broek. Simone Stella plays Girolamo Frescobaldi's Capriccio III "sopra il Cucco" - Girolamo Frescobaldi (1583 - 1643) was an talian keyboardist and composer. His father was a musician and a prominent Ferrarese citizen; he studied with the Ferrarese court organist Luzzaschi (a debt he often acknowledged in dedications), from whom he received training on Vicentino's chromatic archicembalo as well. He was named organist at the Accadernia della Morte in 1597 at the age of 14. At some point he came under the patronage of Guido Bentivoglio, a cleric and member of a powerful Ferrarese family. The duchy of Ferrara reverted to the papacy upon Alfonso's death in 1597; the principal Vatican figure in the affair, Cardinal Pietro Aldobrandini, promised a post at the papal court to Guido, who soon went to Rome, taking Frescobaldi with him. Girolamo was admitted to the Accademia di S. Cecilia in 1604 and became organist at S. Maria in Trastevere in 1607. He accompanied Guido to Flanders in 1607-8, where a set of his 5-part madrigals was published. He was summoned back to Rome by Guido's brother Enzo, a Vatican official, and was appointed organist of the Cappella Giulia, St. Peter's, upon his return; he worked also as a member of Enzo's household musica, though he was less than diligent in that post. Alfred Brendel plays Lv. Beethoven's Rondo a Capriccio, in G major, Op. 129, nicknamed "Rage over a lost penny" (Die Wut über den verlorenen Groschen) by Beethoven's biographer Anton Schindler. Although the piece was written in 1795, when Beethoven was only 25, and Beethoven himself played the Rondo in 1798, the manuscript was found only after his death in 1827, and was first published in 1828 by Anton Diabelli (he of the variations), who took great pains to convince the public the manuscript was complete, which in fact it was not. Among the suspects who may have completed, and edited (accidentally omitting eight measures), the Rondo are Diabelli, whose penchant for tampering with other composers' works is not unknown, and Carl Czerny, Beethoven's student, friend, and favorite piano transcriber. After a disappearance of some hundred years, the original, in Beethoven's hand, reappeared just after World War II, in a private collection.
