CO - The Silent Killer

Carbon monoxide -- CO -- the silent killer. You can't see it, you can't smell it, and it's the #1 cause of poisoning deaths in the world. The people most at risk? Firefighters, paramedics, and EMTs - first responders who are called on to risk their lives to save others, everyday. It's a medical fact that CO exposure -- even moderate levels - can impact your short and long-term health. This film will motivate you to lower your CO risk by taking important precautions at the scene of a fire, so you can live longer and healthier and be around to enjoy life's most precious moments. Narrated by Randolph Mantooth, known for playing Johnny Gage on the hit TV show Emergency! Content of this video endorsed by the IAFF, IAFC, and FDNY. Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

Hi, Im Jeff Schwartz, Chief Medical Officer for ECI. As winter draws near and temperatures plunge, it is important that we consider the possibility of carbon monoxide poisoning in emergency department patients presenting with flu-like symptoms. Each year more than 20000 emergency department visits in the US are attributed to carbon monoxide poisoning. These visits lead to over 4000 hospitalizations and more than 400 deaths. Carbon monoxide poisoning can occur suddenly or build up over a long period of time. Early symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning include headache, nausea, vomiting, and weakness and can easily be mistaken for the flu. Physical exam findings in carbon monoxide poisoning are limited. Patients may present with nothing more than tachycardia, either an abnormally high or low blood pressure, and tachypnea. Other physical exam findings may include cherry-red skin, flame-shaped retinal hemorrhages, bright-red retinal veins, noncardiogenic pulmonary edema, and neurologic and neuropsychiatric disturbances such as memory loss, gait disturbance and confusion. Patients with possible carbon monoxide poisoning should be removed from the source of exposure and started on cardiac monitoring with 100% oxygen therapy as soon as possible, beginning in the prehospital setting and continuing after their arrival at the ED. This should occur until the patient is asymptomatic and their carboxyhemoglobin level drops below 10%. Patients presenting with carboxyhemoglobin levels ...

Carbon Monoxide - Be Alarmed!

We all think we are safety conscious, especially when it comes to our home. We make sure that our fire alarms work correctly, that we lock all doors and windows before leaving the house and that we switch off all plugs before going on holiday, but are we being as safe as we think? Impossible to detect without the aid of an alarm, Carbon Monoxide poisoning claims the lives of 30 people each year and many more become seriously ill as a result of it. In fact according to research* by the Carbon Monoxide - Be Alarmed campaign, eight out of ten people (81%) could actually be at risk of this deadly gas because they dont have an audible alarm and with around one in ten of us not realising just how dangerous Carbon Monoxide is to your health**, there is a serious concern about our lack of knowledge. Carbon Monoxide is produced when fuel-burning appliances, such as boilers and cookers are incorrectly fitted, badly repaired or poorly maintained. Danger signs that indicate the possibility of a Carbon Monoxide leak include gas appliances burning with a lazy yellow or orange flame, sooting or staining around the appliances, and excessive condensation in the room where the appliance is installed. In this video Melissa Matthews, whose brother Tony died of Carbon Monoxide poisoning and Dr Rob Hicks, explain the dangers, the symptoms and just how easy it can be to make your home safe. Kidde KN-COSM-B Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarm Test

Just got the combination talking alarm as now required by state law. Testing out the alarm for the first time. It is much louder than it seems in the video, as the camera must have attenuated the microphone in response. The alarm should last 7 years after first power-up, according to the manual, mostly due to the CO sensor's lifespan. Battery operated with hard wired version available. Seems well made and a worthwhile purchase.
