Carbon Monoxide Poisoning / Educational Video

Carbon Monoxide Poisoning. Public domain video from CDC. Carbon monoxide (sometimes referred to as CO) is a colorless, odorless gas produced by burning material containing carbon. Carbon monoxide poisoning can cause brain damage and death. You can't see it, smell it, or taste it; but carbon monoxide can kill you. Carbon monoxide is the leading cause of accidental poisoning deaths in America. This odorless, tasteless, and colorless gas is known as the "Silent Killer." The Centers for Disease Control estimates that carbon monoxide poisoning claims nearly 500 lives, and causes more than 15000 visits to hospital emergency departments annually. Carbon monoxide is produced by common household appliances. When not properly ventilated, carbon monoxide emitted by these appliances can build up. Early symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning such as headaches, nausea, and fatigue, are often mistaken for the flu because the deadly gas goes undetected in a home. Prolonged exposure can lead to brain damage and even death. Carbon monoxide is formed when organic compounds burn. The most common sources are motor vehicle exhaust, smoke from fires, engine fumes, and nonelectric heaters. Carbon monoxide poisoning is often associated with malfunctioning or obstructed exhaust systems and with suicide attempts. Carbon monoxide poisoning occurs after the inhalation of carbon monoxide gas. Carbon monoxide (CO) is a product of combustion of organic matter under conditions of restricted oxygen supply ...

Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

Hi, Im Jeff Schwartz, Chief Medical Officer for ECI. As winter draws near and temperatures plunge, it is important that we consider the possibility of carbon monoxide poisoning in emergency department patients presenting with flu-like symptoms. Each year more than 20000 emergency department visits in the US are attributed to carbon monoxide poisoning. These visits lead to over 4000 hospitalizations and more than 400 deaths. Carbon monoxide poisoning can occur suddenly or build up over a long period of time. Early symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning include headache, nausea, vomiting, and weakness and can easily be mistaken for the flu. Physical exam findings in carbon monoxide poisoning are limited. Patients may present with nothing more than tachycardia, either an abnormally high or low blood pressure, and tachypnea. Other physical exam findings may include cherry-red skin, flame-shaped retinal hemorrhages, bright-red retinal veins, noncardiogenic pulmonary edema, and neurologic and neuropsychiatric disturbances such as memory loss, gait disturbance and confusion. Patients with possible carbon monoxide poisoning should be removed from the source of exposure and started on cardiac monitoring with 100% oxygen therapy as soon as possible, beginning in the prehospital setting and continuing after their arrival at the ED. This should occur until the patient is asymptomatic and their carboxyhemoglobin level drops below 10%. Patients presenting with carboxyhemoglobin levels ...

in loving memory Of Megan Evans : Carbon Monoxide poisoning little Angel

Life is eternal and love is immortal; And death is only a horizon, And a horizon is nothing save the limit of our sight. Rossiter W. Raymond This memorial website was created to remember our dearest Megan Evans who passed away on July 7, 2007 at the age of 7. You will live forever in our memories and hearts. Megan Elizabeth Evans, age seven, of Flagstaff Arizona, left this world on July 7th, 2007. Megan passed following a tragic accident while on a family trip to Lake Powell. She now rests in the hands of God. Megan was born to Matthew and Jennifer Evans on February 16th, 2000. From the day she was born she filled our lives with all that is good life, energy, laughter and love. She loved to entertain; putting on productions and dances for anyone that would watch. She made this world a brighter place for everyone that knew her, filling life with a sense of adventure and excitement. Megan loved life. She spent hours making beautiful artwork to brighten the rooms of family and friends. She reveled in all that nature had to offer, from planting beautiful flowers to opening her heart and tending to all of Gods creatures. Megan was both a beautiful little girl who loved to play models with her cousin Natalie, and a strong go-getter who spent hours wrestling around with her brother and cousins. Megan was a beloved daughter, granddaughter, sister, niece and friend. Megan will be truly missed by everyone whose life she touch. While on earth she was our angel, we now believe she is ...
