Carl Sagan - Cosmos Intro

The beautiful intro to the Cosmos television series. Carl Sagan talks about the universe and our place within it. *NOTE 2: It appears Koch Entertainment (now "E1 Distribution") doesn´t wish to pull the video after all. I just got a private message basically saying they used the content search feature to place ads on the videos. Sounds like a sound approach, so yeah, hope you DON´T go bankrupt in the recession I guess :) And sorry about my ill-informed comments. *NOTE 1 (The following does NOT apply any more, please see note 2 for clarification): "Koch Entertainment" has just filed a copyright-claim against this clip, so I don´t know for how much longer it stays up. I´d like to thank you all for your ratings and wonderful comments. Finally, I´d like to say FUCK YOU KOCH ENTERTAINMENT, for trying to remove something that has probably made 100+ people go out and buy the series on DVD. I hope you go bankrupt in the recession. Cheers.* If you like, please write them an e-mail and tell them clips like these have encouraged lots of people to buy the thing: videomarketing@kochent.com If you want to buy the series on DVD you can get it here: www.amazon.com Or if you live in Europe you can buy it here: www.play.com

One of Carl Sagan's most pertinent messages for humanity

"Those worlds in space are as countless as all the grains of sand on all the beaches of the Earth. Each of those worlds is as real as ours. In every one of them, there's a sucsession of incidence, events, occurences which influence its future. Countless worlds, numberless moments, an immensity of space and time. And our small planet, at this moment, here we face a critical branch-point in the history. What we do with our world, right now, will propagate down through the centuries and powerfully affect the destiny of our descendants. It is well within our power to destroy our civilization, and perhaps our species as well. If we capitulate to superstition, or greed, or stupidty we can plunge our world into a darkness deeper than time between the collapse of classical civilization and the Italian Renaissaince. But, we are also capable of using our compassion and our intelligence, our technology and our wealth, to make an abundant and meaningful life for every inhabitant of this planet. To enhance enormously our understanding of the Universe, and to carry us to the stars." Carl Sagan explains the immensity of space and time. This clip is from Carl Sagan's Cosmos episode 8, "Journeys in Space and Time."

Carl Sagan: Pale Blue Dot

On February 14, 1990, NASA commanded the Voyager 1 spacecraft, having completed its primary mission, to turn around to photograph the planets it had visited. One image Voyager returned was of Earth, 4 billion miles distant, showing up as a tiny dot. "The spacecraft was a long way from home. I thought it would be a good idea, just after Saturn, to have them take one last glance homeward. From Saturn, the Earth would appear too small for Voyager to make out any detail. Our planet would be just a point of light, a lonely pixel hardly distinguishable from the other points of light Voyager would see: nearby planets, far off suns. But precisely because of the obscurity of our world thus revealed, such a picture might be worth having." "It had been well understood by the scientists and philosophers of classical antiquity that the Earth was a mere point in a vast, encompassing cosmos -- but no one had ever seen it as such. Here was our first chance, and perhaps also our last." "So, here they are: a mosaic of squares laid down on top of the planets in a background smattering of more distant stars. Because of the reflection of sunlight off the spacecraft, the Earth seems to be sitting in a beam of light, as if there were some special significance to this small world; but it's just an accident of geometry and optics. There is no sign of humans in this picture: not our reworking of the Earth's surface; not our machines; not ourselves. From this vantage point, our obsession with ...

Carl Sagan's last interview, part 1 of 3 Carl Sagan gave his last interview with Charlie rose on May 27th 1996. I thought it was important that a high quality copy of this interview, with proper audio video sync, was made available on youtube. The Demon-Haunted World changed my life in ways more profound than I thought possible. That book, and the name of Carl Sagan, should be known to every high school graduate. The Shores of the Cosmic Ocean part 1. "The Cosmos is all that is, ever was, and ever will be. Our contemplations of the Cosmos stir us. Lost somewhere between immensity and eternity is our tiny planetary home, the Earth... The surface of the Earth is the shore of the cosmic ocean. From this shore we have learned most of what we know. Recently we have waded our way out, maybe ankle deep, and the water seems inviting. Some part of our being knows, this is where we came from, we long to return; and we can. Carl Sagan - You Are Here (Pale Blue Dot) [Sagan Time]

This excerpt from A Pale Blue Dot was inspired by an image taken, at Carl Sagan's suggestion, by Voyager 1 on February 14, 1990. As the spacecraft left our planetary neighborhood for the fringes of the solar system, engineers turned it around for one last look at its home planet. Voyager 1 was about 6.4 billion kilometers (4 billion miles) away, and approximately 32 degrees above the ecliptic plane, when it captured this portrait of our world. Caught in the center of scattered light rays (a result of taking the picture so close to the Sun), Earth appears as a tiny point of light, a crescent only 0.12 pixel in size. Is There Intelligent Life on Earth? - Carl Sagan on Environmentalism

Carl Sagan ponders what theoretical planet observers might think while orbiting and watching the Earth. This excerpt was taken from 'Chapter 5: Is There Intelligent Life on Earth?' from the audiobook "Pale Blue Dot: A Vision of the Human Future in Space", written in 1994. Carl was able to narrate some of the audio book before passing away, but unfortunately not all of it. Luckily, some of the most moving passages (namely "You are Here") were near the beginning of the book.
