Neshama Carlebach, music and soul

About Neshama Carlebach Since the age of 5 Neshama knew she was destined to sing. But her grooming for center stage was cut short when her father, Rabbi and mentor Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach Zaz"al died of a sudden hart-attack. Today she lives in New York with her husband and performs around the world -- all while raising two sons. The show must go on. While she's a habitual name in many Jewish homes, few have had a chance to hear her talk. Walking in the footsteps of her father, Rabbi Carlebach Zaz"l , she has trusted herself with the mission of taking both: his music and his Torah to the next generation. One that not only talks about Woman's place in Judaism, reigniting spirituality in orthodox tradition and reaching out to people of other faiths, but actually lives and acts on these values day to day. Neshama, as her name reveals, is about connecting to the soul, to oneself, one's nation and the entire world. It seems that when you listen to the music of her soul, as Rav Kok Zaz"al called it, you hear the lucid unity we all are constantly seeking.

Rabbi Shlomo In Concert part 1

Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach was born in 1925 in Berlin, child of one of the most distinguished rabbinic families in Europe. He came with his family to New York in 1939, and studied at Lakewood Yeshivah with the legendary Rabbi Aaron Kotler, who recognized him as a, genius of his generation. He later became a student of Reb Yosef Yitzchok Schneerson, the sixth Lubavitcher Rebbe, who sent him and Rabbi Zalman Schacter on a mission to reach out to young Jews on college campuses. Guitar in hand, Reb Shlomo embarked on this journey and began composing songs. This is called Rabbi Shlomo in Concert and is one of his best presentations of both his songs and philosophy.

Shlomo Carlebach - Story of an Israeli soldier at Yom Kippur War 1973 "Shema yisrael"

Reb Shlomo Carlebach telling a gevalt Story of an Israeli soldier at Yom Kippur War 1973 "Shema yisrael hashem elokeinu hashem echad" Shema Yisrael The first paragraph of the Shema seen in a Torah scroll The first, pivotal, words of the Shema are: שְׁמַע יִשְׂרָאֵל יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵינוּ יְהוָה אֶחָד - Shema Yisra'el YHWH Eloheinu YHWH Eḥad Rabbinic Judaism teaches that the Tetragrammaton (י-ה-ו-ה), YHWH, is the ineffable and actual name of God, and as such is not read aloud in the Shema but is traditionally replaced with אדני, Adonai ("Lord"). For this reason, the Shema is recited aloud as: Shema Yisrael Adonai Eloheinu Adonai Eḥad - Hear, O Israel: the Lord is our God, the Lord is One The literal word meanings are roughly as follows: Shema — listen, or hear & do (according to the Targum, accept) Yisrael — Israel, in the sense of the people or congregation of Israel Adonai — often translated as "LORD", it is read in place of YHWH; Samaritans say Shema, which is Aramaic for "the [Divine] Name" and is the exact equivalent of the Hebrew "ha-Shem", which Rabbinic Jews substitute for "Adonai" in a non-liturgical context such as everyday speech.[citation needed] Eloheinu — the plural 1st person possessive of אֱלֹהִים Elohim, meaning "our God". Eḥad — the cardinal number one Another possibility is the Samaritan reading: Shema Yisrael Shema Eloheinu Shema Eḥad. (Hear, O Israel, the Name is our God, the Name is One.)[citation needed] The connective "is" is implied ...

Shlomo Carlebach On The Road

Shlomo Carlebach was descended from one of the oldest rabbinical dynasties in pre-Holocaust Germany. He was born in 1925 in Berlin, where his father, Rabbi Hartwig Naftali Carlebach (1889--1967), was an Orthodox rabbi. The family left Germany in 1931 and lived in Baden bei Wien, Austria and by 1933 in Switzerland. Carlebach emigrated to Lithuania in 1938 where he studied at a yeshiva. In 1938 his father became the rabbi of Congregation Kehilath Jacob, a small synagogue on West 79th Street in New York City's Upper West Side. Carlebach came to New York in 1939 via Great Britain. He and his twin brother Eli Chaim took over the rabbinate of the synagogue after their father's death in 1967. Carlebach studied at Yeshiva Torah Vodaas and Yeshiva Rabbi Chaim Berlin in Brooklyn, New York, and Beth Medrash Gevoha in Lakewood, New Jersey. His aptitude for Torah study was recognized by great Torah scholars and teachers, among them Rabbi Shlomo Heiman, and the Rosh Yeshiva of Bais Medrash Gevoha, Rabbi Aharon Kotler. He was considered one of the top students of Rabbi Kotler. Rabbi Yitzchok Hutner, who gave Carlebach his Semicha, considered it a loss to the Torah world that he chose a career in musical Jewish outreach over one as a scholar and teacher. During his yeshiva studies, he was often asked to lead the services as a chazzan. Carlebach became a disciple of Rabbi Yosef Yitzchok Schneersohn, the sixth Rebbe of the Chabad-Lubavitch movement. I lift my eyes to the mountain, from where will my help come? My help will come from the Lord above, maker of all heaven and earth. He will not suffer thy foot to be moved; He that keepeth thee will not slumber. Behold, He that keepeth Israel doth neither slumber nor sleep. The Lord is thy keeper; the Lord is thy shade upon thy right hand. The sun shall not smite thee by day, nor the moon by night. The Lord shall keep thee from all evil; He shall keep thy soul. The Lord shall guard thy going out and thy coming in, from this time forth and forever. A story of Shlomo Carlebach

Last Sunday was the 17th yahrtzeit (the anniversary of the death) of the great Jewish composer, storyteller and rabbi, Rav Shlomo Carlebach. Rabbi Ephraim Z. Buchwald, Director of Jewish Treats' parent organization, the National Jewish Outreach Program, tells a story from Rav Carlebach about a couple that he met at one of his concerts. He noticed that the couple cried throughout the concert, during both happy and sad songs. The couple met Rav Carlebach after the show and explained that they had once considered themselves atheists. They'd tried for years to conceive a child and one day made a promise to God that if he granted them a child they would become religious. By the time Rav Carlebach met them they were observant Jews with three children. This is one of the many great stories that Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach was known to tell. May his memory be a blessing.
