Waters of March (Aguas de Marco) -- Antonio Carlos Jobim

"Waters of March" (Portuguese: "Águas de Março") is a Brazilian song composed by Antonio Carlos Jobim. Jobim wrote both the English and Portuguese lyrics. When writing the English lyrics, Jobim endeavoured to avoid words with Latin roots resulting in the English version having more verses than the Portuguese. Another way in which the English lyrics differ from the Portuguese is that the English version treats March from the perspective of an observer in the northern hemisphere. In this context, the waters are the "waters of defrost" in contrast to the rains referenced in the original Portuguese, marking the end of summer and the beginning of the colder season in the southern hemisphere.[1]. In 2001, "Águas de Março" was named as the all-time best Brazilian song in a poll of more than 200 Brazilian journalists, musicians and other artists conducted by Brazil's leading daily newspaper, Folha de São Paulo. The song lyrics, originally written in Portuguese, do not tell a story, but rather present a series of images that form a collage; nearly every line starts with "É..." ("[It] is..."). In both the Portuguese and English versions of the lyrics, "it" is a stick, a stone, a sliver of glass, a scratch, a cliff, a knot in the wood, a fish, a pin, the end of the road," and many other things, although some specific references to Brazilian culture (festa da cumeeira, garrafa de cana), flora (peroba do campo) and folklore (Matita Pereira) were intentionally omitted from the English ...

Dark secrets: Inside bohevian grove-(1/9)

The club was originally formed exclusively by and for journalists, who lamented the lack of art and culture in post-gold rush San Francisco and wanted to capture something of la vie bohème which had become popularized among the avant garde of the United States at the time. The group quickly relaxed its rules for membership to permit some people to join who had no artistic talent, but had major financial resources. Pretty soon, the "bohemian" writers were in the minority and the wealthy and powerful controlled the club - something which remains true today. An early wealthy member was Nathaniel J. Brittan. In 1872 a remote hunting and party lodge was constructed by Brittan in San Carlos, about 15 miles south of San Francisco, for the use of the Bohemian club. The lodge is octagonal, three stories tall and topped by an octagonal cupola. The entire third story is a great room featuring an eight foot square brick fireplace with tin surfaced benches on the sides. The house still stands on its original foundation at 125 Dale Avenue, San Carlos and is occupied as a private residence. The house is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (Building #94001500)[1]. Over the years the house has suffered significant differential settling and leans forward from the hillside; it is in need of structural repairs if it is to remain a standing landmark. In the early 1890s Brittan offered the Bohemian Club another prominent hill on his San Carlos property for their country retreat ...

"Going to cross" Tango demo dance by Igor Polk and Cecilia Sung

One might say "Too much of arms movement!" and I want to answer this call in advance. Well, yes. This is a demo to illustrate body lead and followers response. Movements are very big and may be someone would think they are exaggerated. By the way, it is movement of body, not arms what you see. I can dance it in such a way that you will not see ANY movements in the body and arms: the lead is totally internal. But how then can I convey you the essence of it? And it is boring.. This dance illustrates several crosses out of many which I know, two most important variations, and I through some others into. The grand cross lead of 8-count basic is not present here. There are 19 crosses in this dance, one is interrupted. Enjoy!
