Cheetah zip line, enrichment for our carnivores

At Howletts and Port Lympne we are always looking for ways to encourage natural activity in the species that we look after. Some of our keepers and education staff recently attended the Regional Environmental Enrichment Conference (REEC) at Marwell. Chris Hales from the small carnivore section presented both a talk and a poster which were both a great success. The poster (which featured a video display) won best poster for the event. This series of short video clips are some of the concepts/ideas that were featured in the poster display and will hopefully benefit both our carnivores and those from other collections in the near future.

Cats and Orangutans Open Their Presents

The carnivore cats and the orangutans rip into their holiday enrichment gifts at the Houston Zoo. See the tigers, cougar, jaguars, clouded leopard, foosa, lions and orangutans enjoy their gifts, specially wrapped by the volunteer Enrichment committee. Zookeeper staff carefully planned out the gifts according to the wishes and temperaments of each animal. Gifts included fruit for the orangutans and fresh meat for the cats (which also make up a healthy part of their regular diet - no candy!) Gifts are carefully wrapped with materials that are safe for the animals, such as using nontoxic glue to seal the packages rather than tape.

Enrichment With Amazing Grace the Ocelot

Bridgette, a volunteer at Big Cat Rescue, does enrichment with Gracie! Enrichment is very important for animals in captivity. It alleviates some of the boredom that the animals experience and gives them something fun to do. Amazing Grace is given a paper bag with some spices inside! Big Cat Rescue is a non-profit, educational sanctuary that doesn't breed buy, sell, trade, or exploit their animals. They are accredited by the USDA, ASA, and TAOS. All the cats at Big Cat Rescue have beautiful Cat-A-Tats, that have real grass, trees, and hiding places for all the cats. Edinburgh Zoo's Sun Bear Halloween Treat

Keepers at Edinburgh Zoo have prepared the perfect Halloween-themed enrichment for sun bear brothers Somnang and Rotana. From bear-friendly pumpkins, to spooky coconuts bats, the bears will have plenty of treats in store this Halloween. Senior carnivore keeper Sharon Hatton explained why enrichment is so important for these young brothers. She said: "These bears are very strong and playful, and they can be a quite destructive, so we are constantly finding new sources to keep them entertained and stimulated. "We've taken inspiration from Halloween and carved some special bear-friendly pumpkins stuffed full of honey and peanuts. Somnang and Rotana love honey and their excellent sense of smell and long tongues are ideal for seeking it out." "We've also hung up coconuts bats which make great enrichment for our bears. Rotana has a bit more patience than his brother Somnang, hitting the coconut up off the ground, and then cracking it open with his long claws to get to the milk and flesh inside. Somnang will often take a bite once his brother has cracked the coconuts open." "Our sun bears' diet consists of a lot of fruit and vegetables, including apple, pears, papaya, and sweet potato. They also get rice, insects, nuts and honey." Sun bears are the smallest members of the bear family and can be found in the tropical rainforests of South East Asia. They are named for the distinctive crescent-shaped patch of golden fur on their chests. These patches are unique to every sun bear <b>...</b>

Over the last year we have been lucky to have had a lot of materials donated to us by different companies and individuals. So far we have had almost £10000 worth of equipment donated, all of which has been put to fantastic use creating enrichment items to help increase the welfare of the animals in our care. 2009-04-23 Kaela Tiger vs. CPT staff and Volunteers

CPT intern Lenore Braford, inspired by a similar project at the Calgary Zoo, created a "Tiger Tug" enrichment toy for Rajah and Kaela tigers. "Enrichment" is a way of enhancing an animal's life in captivity by stimulating or challenging them, such as giving the animal scented toys or hidden meat treats. This video is from the inaugural trial of the "Tiger Tug".

Lun Lun's Enrichment Day

July 12, 2010: If you read ZA's panda update on July 19 (see below), you read about various enrichments offered to Lun Lun by her keepers. Here's a clip of the bag that Kate refers to. I don't think Lun Lun can be outfoxed by her keepers, new tricks and all! Please enjoy! (Note that I doubled the speed of the clip.) ******************** Zoo Atlanta Panda Update Monday, July 19, 2010 Now that Lun Lun's weight has increased and stabilized, she can afford to spend less time eating than she did when nursing a cub. This is giving us a great opportunity to offer her more and different types of enrichment with which she will actually engage. It is very rewarding to a keeper to see an animal interact with something you spent time making or planning. Last week, Lun Lun played with a hanging feeder, a bamboo flute (we hide biscuits inside bamboo culms), ball with food inside, PVC puzzle feeder, many different scents, and a few others. My favorite was the ball with food inside, because we placed the ball inside a large bag with hay. Lun Lun is used to us hiding the food in the bag and not the ball. She kept returning to the bag and hay to look for the treats, since that is normally where she finds them. She did eventually find the food hidden in the ball, but I think she was slightly miffed at us for not placing any in the bag like normal. Kate Roca Carnivore Keeper III

Enclosure enrichments to stimulate sensory abilities

Captive animal managers use a variety of techniques to ensure that their animals are stimulated and have a use for the scents that provide so much function and survival in the wild. The wolves at the Center provide a great deal of stimulus between pack members, but as a summer time initiative, the wolves have two special days a week for treats, scents, smells, and new items to investigate, possess, defend and enjoy. Each individual wolf is different and the enrichment items vary each week, but may include: minnows in the pond, beaver foot popcicles, scents of beaver castor, deer hormones, or catnip, and this week's enrichment, watermelons, cantelope and honey dew. The mellows are not nearly as exciting as meat to a carnivore.

Holiday Treats for Hudson and Whirl

Hudson, a 4-year-old polar bear, and Whirl, a 3-year-old Amur tiger, who reside at Brookfield Zoo, received some holiday treats in a festive way. Keepers decorated 10-foot balsam fir trees donated by Home Depot with some of the animals' favorite foods. Hudson's tree was adorned with fish, lettuce, peanut butter, apples, and meat. Whirl, who is strictly a carnivore, received sausage links that were donated by Tucker's Select. Animal Programs staff is constantly thinking of different ways to enrich the lives of the animals in their care. The special treats are part of a zoo-wide program that encourages natural behavior of the animals by physically and mentally stimulating them with various enrichment.

Smelly cats

Carnivore have a fantastic sense of smell, this is something we all know. And so most keepers will give their carnivores all sorts of scents as a form of enrichment. But is spraying some perfume once a week enough for these highly developed animals? Here is a concept that could change this.

Dynamic branches creation (HD)

Dynamic branches were developed for one of our small cats to encourage more locomotion is the old boy. Most carnivore enclosures use branches that are nailed into place, but to create a more natural movement we linked the branches together using wire rope and karabiners. Although the initial set up took a long time (although no longer than nailing them together) it offers many advantages; The route around the enclosure can be changed on a daily basis very easily, if the cat has to move enclosure then the branches can be taken as well so that his scent is in the new environment helping to reduce stress of the move, and it also gives the cat the chance to learn real balance. The system could easily be used for primates or other arboreal species. The original design also included 'wind catchers' on the branches to make them move more in a breeze just as a real tree does.

Ocelot with ball of string HD

The idea behind this device is that the ocelot can pat the ball of wool (as a domestic would do), but they are not supposed to get the wool out of the tube. Possibilities for changing this device include a longer tube, a sold ball, slightly smaller holes, or hang the tube on the enclosure mesh.
