Classic Chicago Tribune Cartoonists - 1931

An edited excerpt from the silent 1931 promotional documentary, "From Trees to Tribunes," focusing on the Tribune company's stable of cartoonists. At work we can see John T. McCutcheon, Gaar Williams, Carey Orr, Sidney Smith of "The Gumps," Frank King of "Gasoline Alley," Frank Willard of "Moon Mullins, Carl Ed of "Harold Teen," Martin Branner of "Winnie Winkle," Walter Berndt of "Smitty" and Harold Gray of "Little Orphan Annie." Noticeably missing from the line-up is Chester Gould's "Dick Tracy," which didn't begin until October of 1931. From dated materials in the film, the cartoonists appear to have been photographed in February of that year. All three parts of this promotional film can be downloaded at archive.org. The music is 1930's "Medley of Paramount Music" and Ray De Costa's "Whoopee." All video and audio used here are in the public domain.

Everything I needed to know about innovation, I learned by drawing cartoons. Launching a cartoon has a far lower success rate than innovation. Successful cartoonists have to be experts at generating ideas and breaking through the clutter. I'll share my experience, but also insights from Watterson, Groening, Adams, and others.

Landon Cartooning.mp4

Most people have never heard of Charles Landon or his pioneering, mail-order cartooning school, but they've heard of some of the people he taught. Carl Barks (the creator of "Uncle Scrooge") Sid Couchey (the artist for Harvey comics who worked on "Richie Rich") Milton Caniff (the creator of "Terry and the Pirates" and "Steve Canyon") Jack Cole (the artist who did "Plastic Man") Roy Crane (the creator of "Wash Tubbs" and "Buzz Sawyer") Floyd Gottfredson (who did the "Mickey Mouse" comic strip) Bill Holman (creator of "Smokey Stover") Bill Mauldin (who did Willie and Joe for "Stars and Stripes") Chic Young (who created "Blondie" Vince Hamlin (who created "Alley Oop") These men had at least three things in common: 1) They were all born between 1900 and 1921; 2) They were all great cartoonists; and 3) as boys, they all answered an ad that asked them to copy this sketch. TEDx Salem - Cartoonist Madhan - Creativity & Innovation(Tamil)

Madhan is a league by himself in the world of cartooning: he is also well known as a journalist, writer and a film critic. His primary claim to fame was as a cartoonist and his success was his ability to evoke instantaneous laughter. His strong visual ideas were etched in the memory of readers for long. "Advances in the field of multi-media have come as a big plus, but no computer could draw on its own", he says with a chuckle. Madhan started his career as a struggling freelancer, and soon joined the Vikatan Group of Publications as a trainee cartoonist. Later he took over as the Group's Joint Editor, and helped organize the Student Reporters Scheme, under which he trained hundreds of talented college students in the field of journalism. Though a cartoonist, he wrote a successful historical serial on the Great Mughals - Vandhargal Vendrargal (They Came, They Conquered) in Junior Vikatan, which was subsequently published as a book. It was a best-seller, running to 18 editions, with one and a half lakh copies sold. His question-and-answer series 'Hai Madhan'in the Ananda Vikatan magazine is very popular among Tamil readers. In recent times he has emerged as a well-known film critic on television. "Madhan's Thirai Parvai" on the Tamil television channel Star Vijay was a whopping success, completing 350 shows. His habit of putting across his opinion about the movie through cartoons at the end of the show had become very popular. Besides, he has also penned the dialogues for ...

Gordo Cartoonist Gus Arriola in Carmel, CA in 2000

This interview with Gus Arriola, the famed Cartoonist who created Gordo, occured in march of 2000 at his home in Carmel By The Sea, on the Monterey peninsula in California, at spry age of 83. Gus died this week on February 4th of 2008 at age 90, and I wanted to pay homage to one of my cartooning heroes by sharing this interview he graciously granted me. As a cartoonist and illustrator myself, I've idolized him since childhood. His strip, Gordo ran 44 years and was decades ahead of it's time. Smart, funny, worldly and loaded with heart, Gordo was one of the gems of the funny pages from 1941-1985 when he finally retired. It's humanitarian values helped shape a generation of young progressives with a sense of wit, timelessness and wonder. Gordo was a genuine Accidental Ambassador who helped pave the way for better understanding between The USA and Mexico. Here on his balcony, I was astonished at his youthful curiosity as he allowed me to introduce him to a plethora of my favorite "newer" alternative cartoonists, including R. Crumb, Los bros. Hernandez (Gilbert and Jaime) Bill Griffith's Zippy the Pinhead and the new upstart (at that time) Chris Ware, who Gus was mesmerized by. Again, I was so fortunate to know Gus Arriola in the last 10 years of his life and to be able to call him a friend. Saludos, mi Amigo! Enjoy this footage of one of America's underappreciated 20th Century greats. Sam Klemke, Catoonist, Caricaturist, filmmaker and Bon Vivant
