When Saidah Baba Talibah struts onstage, the room any room suddenly turns silent and then, almost instantaneously, bursts into applause. Deep funk and hot buttered soul is what she brought to the GO show early one morning. Along with her two back up singers, the GO audience was treated to amazing guitar player Donna Grantis, who added a lot of acoustic funk, to the already funky vibe. Heard every Saturday morning on CBC Radio One from 10:30AM till noon, CBC Radio One's GO is the best live radio show on the planet. (really)! For more info on the show please go to: www.cbc.ca Nearly all the songs on her new CD Heart of My Own were written while on the road: traveling between cities, crossing the Canadian prairies, searching for a place to stop in the Nevada desert, trailing through the Smoky Mountains, standing in the bright dusk of a summer night in the Yukon. Perhaps most surprising was the strong influence her short time in the Yukon had on this album. Basia spent five days and nights in Dawson City, where for the first time she experienced true silence. Here the band perform a tune off their latest record on the acclaimed CBC Radio Show GO featuring Brent Bambury. Heard each and every Saturday morning from 10:30 till 12 Noon, Brent and company will take you on a musically entertaining journey each and every week. Having spent several years carving their teeth on the road with the likes of The Sadies, Sloan, Hayden, The Weakerthans, Calexico and Nick Cave, Toronto's Cuff the Duke are poised to make the jump from indie-scene-darlings to bona-fide Canadian music icons. Their new album, Way Down Here was co-produced by Blue Rodeos Greg Keelor at his beautiful barn studio in rural Ontario and features the band's most mature, captivating and impressive collection of songs to date. Cuff the Duke started out in Oshawa before making the move to Toronto in 2002. Their debut album, Life Stories for Minimum Wage was released on Three Gut Records, at the time one of the most exciting indie-labels in Canada. Their second and third albums, Cuff the Duke and Sidelines and the City respectively, were both released on Hardwood Records alongside label mates Basia Bulat and Hayden. Last year the band won accolades backing Hayden on his Canadian and North American tours. Having played in venues ranging from Canadas small clubs to many of the country's largest arenas and concert auditoriums, Cuff the Duke have earned their road stripes -- and now with the release of Way Down Here, they are sure to earn a place in the hearts of music lovers ...

The Story: "The Runner's" race ends on Dec. 31, 1980. Marshall McLuhan has died of a stroke in his sleep. His colleague Sam Solecki names him The Runner, the only one "on the move" while other professors published their "usually dull papers." The long-limbed McLuhan used to stride about the University of Toronto's St. Michael's College, flanked by students and faculty attempting to keep up with his constant flow of ideas. Solecki points out McLuhan was born in the early 1900s with the generation of giants — Donald Creighton, Robertson Davies, Northrop Frye — and says, "without him, our intellectual life will not only be duller but radically impoverished." Did You Know?: • McLuhan had already suffered a stroke in the fall of 1979 that left him without most of his motor functions. • On the evening of his death, McLuhan had dinner guests and was in "great spirits," afterward smoking cigars and watching television. • When Marshall was eight years old, his paternal grandfather, James McLuhan, also died of a stroke. Marshall was often compared to his grandfather who was described as a person of remarkable intelligence with an insatiable curiosity, enjoying everything from philosophy to the polka. Credits: Medium: Radio Program: Stereo Morning Broadcast Date: Jan. 6, 1981 Reporter: Sam Solecki Duration: 4:09

A writer from The Rick Mercer Report asks retired Chief of the Defence Rick Hillier about what will happen to the Tim Hortons franchise in Kandahar, when the war ends in Afganistan. Will it go to a warlord, inquires Greg Eckler, writer for The Mercer Report. Hilllier shows his sense of humour when answering the question. Hillier retired in the summer of 2008, as Chief of the Defence staff of the Canadian Forces. You could almost hear the sigh of relief in Ottawa as Canada's most popular, and most controversial, military leader since the second World War left a role in which he'd been as frank, unpredictable and resolutely apolitical as any of his predecessors. Born and raised in Newfoundland, Hillier joined the military as a young man and quickly climbed the ranks. He played a significant role in such domestic challenges as the ice storm that paralyzed much of eastern Ontario and Quebec in 1998, and quickly became a player on the international scene, commanding an American corps in Texas and a multinational NATO task force in Bosnia-Herzegovina. But it was his role as General Rick Hillier, Canada's Chief of the Defence staff that defined him as a Canadian icon. In Afghanistan, Canada faced its first combat losses since the Korean War, with every casualty becoming front page news. A country formerly ambivalent, or even angry, about its role in the conflict suddenly became gripped by the drama unfolding not only in a war zone halfway around the world but in unfriendly ...
