CBS also bought an option to develop a miniseries about this real life story based on a second book written about it. Both networks decided to go ahead with their respective projects regardless of the competition. For this reason, CBS aired "At Mother's Request" (Starring Stefanie Powers as Frances) in January 1987. NBC premiered "The Nutcracker" two months later.

As Frances becomes closer with Richard, her family gets worried about her little boys. TRIVIA: NBC began shooting "The Nutcracker" mini-series in the first week of October 1986. CBS began shooting their mini-series about the same story ("At Mother's Request," with Stefanie Powers) a week later. Despite that, CBS managed to finish their project earlier (it also ran for only 4 hours, whereas NBC opted for a 6-hour mini-series with "Nutcracker). Thus, CBS' "At Mother's Request" aired in January 1987, two months before NBC managed to finally put "Nutcracker" on air.
