Baroque Dance: Fairy Queen III - Chinese Chaconne

This is not the La Belle Danse company performing. This is an excerpt of Purcell's "Fairy Queen" from the 1989 Aix-en-Provence Festival in France. The wonderful dancers are from Francine Lancelot's now defunct "Ris et Danceries" company.

Partita No.2 in D Minor,BWV1004, Chaconne,

The Partita in D minor for solo violin (BWV 1004) by Johann Sebastian Bach was written during the period 1717--1723 and some scholars—Professor Helga Thoene prominently—suggest it was written in memory of Bach's first wife, Maria Barbara Bach. The partita contains five movements: 1.Allemanda 2.Corrente 3.Sarabanda 4.Giga 5.Ciaccona A strong common theme is shared between the first four movements. In the Allemande, there is a hint at the repeated bass, which from then on continues to haunt the piece until it makes its full appearance in the Ciaconna. While the first four movements reflect the standard German baroque dance suite, the overall dark character of the partita is enhanced by the monumental Ciaccona which closes the work. Notable recordings of the Partita have been made by Ida Haendel, Henryk Szeryng, Midori Goto, Nathan Milstein, Arthur Grumiaux, Lara St. John, Gidon Kremer, Jascha Heifetz, Itzhak Perlman, Yehudi Menuhin, Leonid Kogan, Hilary Hahn, Rachel Podger, Ann Fontanella, Peter Chang, and Julia Fischer to name a few. Bach Chaconne Played Live

Bach Chaconne by Ann Fontanella. Bach Chaconne is Bach's dark masterpiece that scholars believe was written as a funeral dance after his first wife died. Heifetz played many of Bach's solo pieces (including the Chaconne) while supporting the troops in WWII. He couldn't bring a piano to the front lines, so solo pieces were required. I play this in the uptempo and romanticized style of Heifetz.
Marais - Chaconne for Solo Viola da Gamba

MARIN MARAIS (1656-1728) "Pieces a une et a deux violes" Book I - Chaconne Performed by John Dornenburg, viola da gamba *Marin Marais was a French composer and viol player. He studied composition with Jean-Baptiste Lully, often conducting his operas, and with master of the bass viol Monsieur de Sainte-Colombe for 6 months. He was hired as a musician in 1676 to the royal court of Versailles. He did quite well as court musician, and in 1679 was appointed "ordinaire de la chambre du roy pour la viole", a title he kept until 1725. He was a master of the basse de viol, and the leading French composer of music for the instrument. He wrote five books of Pièces de viole (1686-1725) for the instrument, generally suites with basso continuo. These were quite popular in the court, and for these he was remembered in later years as he who "founded and firmly established the empire of the viol" (Hubert Le Blanc, 1740). His other works include a book of Pièces en trio (1692) and four operas (1693-1709), Alcyone (1706) being noted for its tempest scene. As with Sainte-Colombe, little of Marin Marais' personal life is known after he reached adulthood. Marin Marais married a Parisian, Catherine d'Amicourt, on 21 September 1676. They had 19 children together. Marais and his music were featured in the film Tous les matins du monde (1991), an atmospheric, meticulously imagined life of Monsieur de Sainte-Colombe. Marais' music figured prominently in that film, including his longer work Sonnerie ...

I don't really like the "soft" approach of this pianist, I think this piece requires much more passion and even aggressiveness. Horowitz's playing would be perfect :P The scan quality is poor in some parts, sorry.

Handel Chaconne in G major Fischer Rec 1938

Before WW2, pianists occasionally performed the keyboard music of Handel during their recitals. But after the Baroque performance practice craze took over, it was concidered unfashionable to perform Bach,Handel et.al. on the piano unless it was a transcription by Busoni, of course. Somehow, Scarlatti escaped this edict. I suspect that if Chopin had been a Baroque composer, he would have also. Fortunately,a new generation of pianists such as Angela Hewitt have decided that it is quite fashionable to perform Bach on the piano. Hopefully, we will once again here some of Handel's magnificent keyboard suites along side of those of Bach
Secret Garden- Chaconne

This is the eleventh song from Secret Gardens album Songs From a Secret Garden, from 1995. "The word Chaconne refers to a baroque dance form, a melody moving to a constant bass figure or ostinato. This Chaconne meets none of these requirements. But the poetic sound of the word and the strong baroque feeling is the background for the title. The French Suites by Bach have made a strong impression on me, and some elements in the Chaconne remind me of them. Chaconne was written in 1994." -Rolf Lovland
